Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EgC.2ACE/10145.1 Message Board Post: Your best option would be to search the Kirk Session records for Rothes. The Kirk Sessions took a great interest in the paternity of illegitimate children and so you may find a lot of information. The Kirk Session records, that survive, are held in the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh. PS. Check the birth certificate for a stamp on the left hand side - that would be applied if the parents subsequently married and the child was 'legitimised' by their marriage.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EgC.2ACE/10145 Message Board Post: My grandfather, James Inverarity, was born on 15th March 1864 at Briech Street, Rothes. He was the son of George Inverarity, a farm servant and Elspeth Milne. Unfotunately it was an illegitimate birth and there is no information on the certificate to help me and obviously no marriage certificate to take me back to the next generation. George is proving rather difficult to track down. The only possibility I have come across is one born in St. Vigeans near Arbroath in 1821 which would make him a sprighly 43 when my grandfather was born. Being a farm servant he obviously moved around and is difficult to pin down in census returns. Does anyone have any information on George Inverarity or the hapless Elspeth Milne ? Thanks !

    3. The keeping of Passenger Lists at US ports of entry becan in 1820. Names of immigrants have been extracted from many of these records and published in passenger lists' indexes. Such indexes normally oidentify passengers by name, age, origin and ship. Some strategies for determining your ancestor's ship: 1) Start with what you know and work backward 2) Are there passport records? (Issued as early as 1797 in the U.S.) 3) Search for Shipping News- newspapers of the period in a location can provide important information about ship's departures and arrivals. Here are some sources which you might look at to get information on your Aitchison family: The Immigrant Transcribers Guild (ISTG) at Rootsweb is an on-going volunteer effort to transcribe passenger lists to America beginning in the 1600's- www.rootsweb.com The microfilmed records from NARA can be ordered through your local FHL (Family History Library)- www/archives.gov/publications/microfilm_catalogs/immigrant/immigrant_passenger_arrivals.html#pubprogram Ellis Island Immigration Information- www.ellisisland.org (arrivals in New York) LDS site-www.familysearch.com-type in the name of the country, then the topic of Emigration and Immigration. You will then get a listing of what records have been microfilmed and the call number to order the film which you can view at your local Family History Center Ports of Entry- www.the shipslist.com/ports- provides a good insight into immigration depots such as Castle Gardens and Ward Island in the U.S. Cyndi's List-www.cyndislist.com/portsdepart.htm-shows some good sites pertaining to Ports of Departure(this is a subscription site) www.ancestry.com/serch/main.htm-from the blue template form, select Immigration from the Record Type pull-down menu. You will be presented with a list of all the current databases. Here you will find passenger list records for emigrations to the US and much more... (paid site) www.Google.com- A sophisticated search engine-search for Passenger Lists and/or Ships Lists and Immigration and naturalization,etc... Good luck...Noreen in US

    1. Re: [SCOTLAND] Re: How did the Scots name their children?????
    2. I am trying to get information on McNeill/MacNeil/macneils during the 1700s. My grandfather was a physician, presumably in Scotland then came to the US after 1750 or 60s. He was here and already had his family in 1790. I have contacted by phone the colleges in Edinburgh and Glascow to no avail. He was married to a Mary Beaton Smiley/Smilie/Smellie (?), also from Scotland. I have read that the Beatons were well known in the medical fields back then. Is it possible that he was apprenticed to his wife's relative or to someone else? I know for a fact that he performed surgeries in the state of Georgia, USA until the early 1800s. He amputated his own leg and trepanned a silver dollar into his daughter's forehead (my grandmother) when she was kicked in the head by a horse. But there seem to be a thousand Archibald McNeills.....I would appreciate any help. I also have access to Ancestry's UK info. Patricia in Georgia

    2. In other words, if my gggggrandfather's only son was named Archibald McNeill (my grandfather's name was also Archibald), then it is very possible that my grandfather's father was also an Archibald. Is my thinking correct here?
