We believe that they originally came from near the town of Ayr. I first heard of Sweet Avon from researchers of the Ross Co. Ohio branch of the family who had this place as part of their family history. Their John McCafferty was one of the sons of my earliest recorded ancestor, Neil McCafferty from Augusta Co.Virginia in the early 1700's. I would be interested in knowing something about your McCafferty family. If both our families were from the same area of Scotland, maybe we can help each other with research. I hope to hear from you. Spelling of names was usually down to the person recording them and if the person reporting was less than literate then was up to the recorder to make the best stab. Farries is said to derive from O'Fearghuis (son of Fergus) and therefore probably originally Irish. In Dumfriesshire there are eleven of the name recorded in the Commissariot record between 1624 and 1800 and " Agnes Faries was examined for the test" (witchcraft) in 1685 in Tinwald. Hope this gives a bit of background. By the way have you located Oakwoodhill ? Regards, Graeme Edinburgh

There were 3 MacHattie brothers who emigrated from Scotland in 1786: Alexander, William and George. Another brother, John, stayed in Scotland. Alexander dropped the "Mac" from his name after arriving in Nova Scotia. But, a couple of his descendants reinstated the "Mac". Alexander lived for some years at Barney's River, Pictou Co. and then moved to W. River, Pictou Co. near Fairweather's Mill on the east side of the river in 1795. He lived at the Ten Mile house on 600 acrea for nearly 25 years and then moved to E. River, St. Mary's in Guysborough Co., Nova Scotia. William MacHattie settled on a 200 acrea grant at Barney's River. George lived at Newport, Hants Co. He married Mary Ann Maxwell Jadis. I have no other information on William and George. Alexander married Catherine Carolyn MacDonald, daughter of Joseph MacDonald (who had 9 daughters). I have an extensive amount of information of this Hattie family ! line if you are interested. Most of my information comes from the book, "Hattie Memoires".Let me know if there is anything more I can do to help you.

It is quiet - but you might get some more responses there. Hatton Burn Farm is just north of Milnathort. Try this: http://www.multimap.com/ - key in Milnathort into the search box and zoom in on the circle a couple of times. Balgedie is to the south east of Milnathort on the east side of Loch Leven. The best reference book for Kinross-shire is "The Annals of Kinross-shire" - much of which is on line at: http://www.tulbol.demon.co.uk/annals1.htm The Tullibole site also mentions: "David Marshall's Kinross-shire & and its Owners, Kinross, Orwell and Portmoak. pp700. 3 vols There is only four copies of this book and they are held at Kinross Library, Perth Library, Scottish Record Office, and one privately held. The contents of this book is the result of David Marshall's research in the Kinross House Charter Room. some of the research goes back to II David. Contains assorted history and the history of 30 Kinross-shire farms their owners and etymology and genealogy research." - and lists the owners at: http://www.tulbol.demon.co.uk/kinross-shire_and_its_owners.htm You can try contacting the AK Bell library in Perth: http://www.pkc.gov.uk/library/ - (I'm not there is a Kinross library anymore!) Hatton Burn Farm is now run by "Crop Sure (Kinross)" - an agricultural merchant. I take it that you have seen the 1851 Census listing the children still living at Oakwoodhill. John's wife Ann Ward was born in Graitney (or Gretna as it is now called) and all of the children were christened there despite being born in Half Morton.
