I have a record from scotlandspeople, which shows someone born in Orkney in that year. Unlike English records it doesn't show the mothers maiden name. To save my mate the £10.00 for the certificate, does anyone have a Gerald Mackay whose mothers name was Agnes Duffy? Many thanks in advance. Maria and her children, David, Gustaf, Victor, Christina, Charlotta, Clara and Emma, arrived in Kansas in 1859. Her two oldest sons, Nils Peter and John, had come to America seven years earlier and, after a stop in Illinois, settled in Pottawatomie County, Kansas. They emigrated from Sweden. They first lived in Östergötland län, and then Kalmar län. Maria's name in Sweden was Maria Axelsdotter and she was married to Johan Nilsson. The children's surnames were Johansson and Johansdotter Mariadahl, Kansas, meaning Maria's valley, was named after Maria. Members of each of these branches get together for a reunion each year and in August 2008, celebrated the 91st Annual Reunion. We share a potluck lunch, memorabilia, and stories. Someone usually has old photographs to show. We meet in different locations each year. My grandmother was Alice, but was Alice Wilson who married two different men. one's last name was Morrison, and the other was Lowe. Alice and (Capt)Lowe had a daughter named Jessie Bell (Belle)Lowe. Jessie Bell was born circa 1905-1910 We know nothing about Capt Lowe. I think Alice was either born or moved to MI but she moved south and died in TX. It may not be what you are looking for, but it sure is strange to see all of those names linked and not be a part of the family some way. Hello, I also am researching the McAlpine family. I have a Margaret Stewart McAlpine who was born in 1856 Wigtownshire, Scotland and immigrated to NZ and married 1872 in Dunedin to John Veitch. I am still trying to find out who her parents were. Where in Scotland did your McAlpine's come from? I look forward to hearing from you. Hello List, Was this Hugh Campbell that married Janet McCord born about 1829 in Wigtownshire, Scotland the son of Andrew Campbell and Mary Stuart? I have been looking for Hugh in the 1871 Census but have not been able to find him, Did he die between 1864 and 1871? I thought I found him in Tynemouth Workhouse, Newcastle Upon Tyne, England but have noticed that the Hugh Campbell there was Born in Newcastle? How many children did Hugh and Janet Campbell have please? I thought they only had 5 at first, but now think they had three more children. It is such a shame as I have dates of birth for 6 of them but the two eldest children I only have a rough year for them. I think Hugh Campbell was my 3X Great Grandfathers Nephew, My 3X Great Grandfather being Alexander Campbell son of Andrew Campbell and Janet McNeish. Thank you in advance for any information I might receive. Kind Regards Pamela J Groves

** If you have only checked one census, try the others (1871, 1881, 1891, 1901), as sometimes the enumerator inserts the exact place of birth, instead of just "Scotland" in an English census return. Try to get his military record from Kew, as this should say where he enlisted, even if it doesn't name his birthplace. That would give you some indication of where to look. The date of enlistment might be helpful in finding him in a Scottish census. Happy hunting! Gordon Johnson. I know that he ended his days as a Master Gunner in the Royal Artillery in Tynemouth in England, but would love to know where he came from originally. Any suggestions? >
Is it possible to get records from England that are more detailed. I would write a local genealogy society and see what they could find out about his life in England. There might be a hint where or why he went to England that would shed some light. "[email protected]" <[email protected]> wrote: This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
