Author: jim_youngman Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/21595.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks for the reference. There are several other Newhalls in the east of Scotland which like this one in Aberdeenshire seem to be mainly farms and estates. I just can't distinguish which might have been a village in 1760. I guess I can start searching parish records near all of them, but if anyone has a better idea, I would be most grateful. If they lived in two different parishes, the banns are recorded in these two parishes. You need to read the original entry in the OPRs to discover (if you are lucky)in which parish the wedding ceremony was performed. If not clear, it is best to assume that it was in the bride's parish. The odds are in favour of that. Not all marriage registers are well recorded. Some just state the two names and a date (which can either be the date the banns were first read, or the date of the wedding), or worse, just a sum of money paid. Gordon Johnson.

    3. Paul - the surname McNaull is one of the derivatives from the Irish Gaelic original for McCullough [ Robert Bell: The Book of Ulster Surnames, p.149], so if you have any Scottish connections, they are more lkikely to be McCullough. Happy hunting! Gordon
