So when you look at all the children of one set of parents you may find two James, two Helens, etc listed. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I omitted to mention that John Turner was in the cotton trade with, John MacLellan who was a cousin who married John Turner's sister, Mary. As far as I can make out owned either a cotton mill in Glasgow or a power loom manufacturing business that supplied the mill. I thought it was the former but John's occupation at his death was a power loom manufacturer. The notebook tells me that the mill was sold in 1836 which was following John's death. John MacLellan died in 1844. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: isobeltipler Surnames: Turner Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/6584.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi I have just been browsing and seen your post from 3 June 2000 about Turners of Glen Luss. I am descended from Turners on my maternal grandmother's side and have in my possession a manuscript notebook of descendants of Duncan Turner from 1649. For the first four generations just my direct line appears which is Duncan Turner (b1649) - John Turner (b?) - Coll Turner - (b 1715) - Duncan Turner (b1746). From that generation through to the 19th century more detail appears. The Alexander you refer to was the son of the Duncan Turner (b1746-d1834) who was married to Lucy Leitch and they had 13 children. The first seven children were born at Mainepark or Mainspark, Row (Rhu) in the period 1775-1787. The succeeding six children were born at Edintaggart, Luss. The 3rd child was called Coll (1779-1796)so died young but in 1797 their 11th child was also called Coll (1797-1838). He married Catherine Mitchell in 1835. My direct ancestor was John Turner (1783-1834)who was their 5th child and had been married to a Catherine Mitchell so maybe Coll married his widow. This John may be the John you refer to but I do not have the name Knox in the notebook. The 8th child was William (1789-1840). He had two children the 2nd of whom was called William (1831-1868) The latter drowned off Penzance in 1868. I believe that the ship was called the Garonne rather than the Caronne. The 13th child was Alexander (1802-1868). He also drowned off Penzance. I hope that this will be of help to you even if it is 8 years late. Author: GordonPertJohnson Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/21597.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: ** The calling of banns in a parish church simply required at least one of the parties to have been resident in the parish for at least three weeks. Place of birth is NOT indicated by this. Where the two parties were resident in different parishes, the banns had to be called in EACH parish, so that the indexes will apparently show a marriage in two parishes within a few days: it really means the banns called in both parishes. The odds favour the marriage occurring in the bride's parish of residence, but the registers may not make this clear, due to poor recording. While most marriages are between people living in nearby parishes, some I have seen were between parishes a hundred or more miles apart. There is thus no simple answer to your problem. I had looked at LDS previously. Two of the Davids had fathers named Donald, which makes them feasible contenders. My David's sons were David, Donald and Robert. But the Donald MacDonald is not all that unusual. One of them was in Newlands Peebleshire and there is a Newhall estate in that area. More to be done. I will follow through as soon as I am able. The Caley was originally The Caledonian Asylum (School) set up by Sir Walter Scott and others early in the 19th Century for the sons of Scottish servicemen and sons of poor Scots living in London. My GG Grandfather, Robert MacDonald (b 1828, Middlesex) was admitted in 1835 after his father (David) died at an age of about 75 leaving a family (wife and 3 sons)without any financial support. The Asylum still exists in the form of The Royal Caledonian Schools Trust and has extensive records back to its earliest days. I struck it rich when I found Robert there in the 1841 census. I've been playing with ScotlandsPeople. I've used the search criteria - surname: *cdonald (takes care of mac and mc), forename: david, sex: both (sex not always recorded so never restrict search to M or F). To get highest number of results (25) for the first credit, I gradually extended the possible birth dates and got 25 results in the period 1746 to 1773 (only 5 from 55 to 65). Perhaps this gives you somewhere to start. There are none in Newhall unfortunately - that would be too easy. Best of luck. If she was married in Bo'ness, WLN in 1781 would she have to have been born in Bo'ness? Would it be likely/possible for a couple, one being born in Carriden and one in Linlithgow being married in Bo'ness? Feedback on this issue would help me narrow down the correct birth/parentage files. Thanking anyone in advance who has knowledge on this matter.
