Author: GordonPertJohnson Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/21608.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: To add to the other reply, While a few parishes - at certain times - kept a burial register, most did not, and when the Mormons microfilmed the church registers, they included financial records such a mortcloth dues, coffin accounts, etc., but it is almost never that you will find an adult's relationship to anyone else. Even children are often only given a name plus "a child", sometimes with a family place of residence. Gravestones (and 90 per cent of the population had no gravestone) can be more helpful, naming spouses, and parents of a dead child. Often other family members are commemorated on the same stone, or on another one nearby. Aberdeen Royal Infirmary kept some records of deaths in the hospital (now published by ANESFHS), but few have relatives named, and little other identifying data. IOn some locations there are local newspapers back that far, but ordinary folk did not merit an obituary, and a story about a death usually happened where it was a fire, drowning or some similar event. "normal" deaths got ignored by the press back then. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: DonGillies61 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/21608.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm afraid there is no set place for pre-1855 deaths. Unlike with baptisms/births and marriage banns, the parish records hold very few death records. Some parishes give a list of those for whom a mortcloth was hired out - but generally they only give the deceased's name, with no other useful info. Your best best bet is if you know where the person is likely to have died. Many graveyards have had their gravestones transcribed and published by volunteers, and many of these are available in libraries/ family history societies etc. Is the individual on the 1841 or 1851 census ? 1. Re: [SCOTLAND] SCOTLAND Digest, Vol 3, Issue 244 James PATRICK MAIN., MAINE., MAYNE (Dave and Anna Whitehouse)
    2. margaret goodman
    3. Received this response this morning on your query - thought you would like to reply directly to this. Hope this helps. Kind regards Maggie James PATRICK MAIN., MAINE., MAYNE (Dave and Anna Whitehouse) It was a pleasure to hear from you. Like you, I am descended from James Patrick MAIN who came to Tasmania via Hibernia in 1818. I am from Mary Ann MAINE, twin sister to Patrick. Interestingly, I am also descended from Sarah McCLOUD, sister to Maria McCLOUD (McLEOD) - one less tree to search, but makes for confusion at times as you can imagine. I've heard and have bits and pieces of James MAIN and his 1/2 brother. A chap in New Zealand, surname WHITEHOUSE, is also descended from James and has long searched for the correct birthday and place of his. I believe he is from Edinburgh. I say this only because his Convict indent states his birthplace as Edinburgh. I don't know that anyone has, (or if they have, I don't know about it) a copy of a birth certificate at all. Its also a bit of a mystery in tracing family trees that some children were registered and some not, especially in Tas where they lived in isolation in the early years and rarely went to "big cities". Do you have details of John McCLOUD and Mary POTTER - Maria and Sarah's parents? They were both convicts and if you don't have details, am happy to share. Its great to talk to a 'rellie' and I look forward to hearing from you. Regards Lynne in Tassie. 1. [SCOTLAND] John James McLOUGHLIN, b~1856 (to London, Eng.)
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I've been trying to find out more about my husband's grandmother for several years. This week I have received new information from several sources, and I'd like to find out more about the people I'm hearing about. My husband's family knew the grandmother as having been born Annie Mary Magdalene McLAUGHLIN b~1890 in either Ireland or England. She spent some part of her childhood in a Convent in England. And, her father had been born in England and her mother in Ireland. She came to the US in ~1908 and married in Waltham, MA, USA, ~1911, and she and James GAVIN lived in Cambridge, MA, with their children. When I posted a query on the Ireland List, I received responses with very good census information, etc. I have heard that the grandmother was probably born in 1890 in London, England, and her name was probably Annie McLOUGHLIN. She seems to have been the daughter of John James McLOUGHLIN and Jessie Caroline WAGNER, and they married in London in 1873. They seem to have had 6 daughters, Eleanor, Catherine, Jessie, Louisa, Sophia, and Annie. John seems to have died in 1890 in London, the year Annie was born. The 1891 census showed 3 of the daughters in the "Convent of the Sacred Heart" in London, Catherine, Louisa, and Sophia. I don't know what happened to 2 of the daughters and Annie was an infant. In 1899, the widow, Mrs. Jessie McLOUGHLIN remarried to Samuel LUSCOMBE, and they were living in London in 1901 with her 4 daughters, Catherine, Louisa, Sophie, and Annie. The 1881 census has John and Jessie McLOUGHLIN, 25, in London with 3 daughters, and it says they John was born in Scotland. (And Jessie, also??) And, I was wondering if anyone is researching John's McLOUGHLIN family in Scotland in the early 1800's. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) P.S. I received the death record for Mrs. Annie (McLOUGHLIN) GAVIN this week. She died of a heart attack in 1949, and there was only limited information on her parents, possibly because her adult children did not know about the family she came from. The record said her father was (unknown) McLAUGHLIN and her mother was (unknown) McDERMOTT, both born in Ireland. I don't know whether the adult children just didn't know, or whether Annie's mother had married 3 times, instead of 2.
