They also have a hard time traveling so they enjoy doing research from their homes. Could someone tell me the best free or low cost websites they can use to gain information about their ancestors in Scotland? Thank you for your help. Christine Jones email address: [email protected]

We would appreciate your opinion. http://www.fpyork.info A "memorialization website" lists all the traditional information on a cemetery website. However, each person has their own webpage. We are asking families to submit remembrances, links, photos, etc. Veterans receive flags. Fire Department members get logos. We expect to add church membership and other civic group recognition. Coats of arms are granted to individuals, and only the heir may use the same coat of arms. Other relatives may get a coat of arms differenced to show their relationship to the original. Only the Lord Lyon has the power to grant coats of arms and this process is expensive and requires a proved pedigree to be submitted. There was no "correct" spelling until very recent times. The concept did not exist in earlier times. The IGI is neither complete nor comprehensive - it ignores the pre-Reformation period. One can find the surname Speedie/Speedy as Speddy and Spuddy in the 1540s (Protocol book of James Foulis), and the 1520s as Speithy/Spethy (Protocol book of John Foulis) The IGI makes assumptions about variant spellings, but often fails to recognise a variant for what it is. Author: samanthaspeedy Surnames: Speedy, Bradfield Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/4202.4236/mb.ashx Message Board Post: "SPEEDY was of two-fold origin. It was a baptismal name, a font name wishing prosperity or good-speed to the child and it was also used as a nickname for a swift runner, from the Old English word SPED. In Scotland the name is spelt SPEEDIE. Surnames having a derivation from nicknames form the broadest and most miscellaneous class of surnames, encompassing many different types of origin. The most typical classes refer adjectivally to the general physical aspect of the person concerned, or to his character. Many nicknames refer to a man's size or height, while others make reference to a favoured article of clothing or style of dress. Many surnames derived from the names of animals and birds. In the Middle Ages ideas were held about the characters of other living creatures, based on observation, and these associations were reflected and reinforced by large bodies of folk tales featuring animals behaving as humans. Early records of the name mention Johannes Sped, 1273, County Su! ffolk. Margaret Speed was documented in County Cambridge in the year 1300. Surnames as we know them today were first assumed in Europe from the 11th to the 15th Century. The employment in the use of a second name was a custom that was first introduced from the Normans. They themselves had not long before adopted them. It became, in course of time, a mark of gentler blood, and it was deemed a disgrace for gentlemen to have but one single name, as the meaner sort had. At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face, and armour encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield and embroidered on his surcoat, the flowing and draped garment worn over the armour. Later instances of the name include Thomas Spedy, who was a witness in Edinburgh in the year 1553, and John Speede and Elizabeth Cheynye who wer! e married in London in the year 1555. John Spidie was recorded in Dunf ermline in 1571. Cicilie Speed of Tattenhall (widow) was listed in the Wills at Chester in 1620. Tom Speedy was a game-keeper and naturalist, who died in Scotland in 1924." Our family tree starts with a Dr Robert George Dunnel Speedy, born 1863 / 1872 (no-one seems to be sure). He married Ivy Bradfield. They had 3 children, Albert, Mary and Robert George. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: mcbirnie_1 Surnames: MCBURNIE, MCBIRNIE Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/10258.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: 'Homecoming Scotland 2009' will be a big year in Scotland, with a call out for Scots around the world. In conjunction with these events, on August 8 & 9th 2009 we will be holding the first 'McBirnie / McBurnie Family Gathering' in Ayrshire - where our common ancestor James McBurnie and his wife Ann Thomson settled and raised their family there. We are searching for descendants who can trace their ancestry back to Glasgow, Crosshill, Maybole or Kirkmichael and heopefully to James of one of his children. Some of the know surnames connected are: Mcculloch, Fulton, McClure, Lafferty. We are not sure of his origons. The actual location of his birth is unconfirmed at this point however it is believed it could be Holywood, south of Belfast. Extensive research has located a Robert McBurnie and wife Isabella (Bella) Spence who registered the birth of a son James, in the same year as our James was believed to be born, 1784. In the 1851 Census - we found, James age 63, a cotton weaver, shown as born Ireland, and Ann (Thomson) his wife shown as a corn filler, age 60 born Girvan, Ayrshire. They were living at 87 Dalhowan Street, Kirkmichael. An extract from the Register of Deaths Scotland shows James McBurnie a weaver, marrried, died 29/04/1859 at Crosshill Village. His son Samuel provided the information for this registration. The record shows James died of 'old age' which he had suffered for six months! He was buried in the Kirkmichael Churchyard. Many of the birth, death and marraige records reveal our family ot be poor weavers or labourers, and many were illiterate until the late 1800s. In the late 1800s - early 1900s, many of James and Ann's great-grand children (children of Thomas McBirnie & Maggie Swan) emigrated to the colonies to make a new life - some to Australia, some to Canada, while others chose to remain in Scotland. This gatehring will be the first time that the family has come together since then. Descendants from Australia and Canada have already booked to 'come home to the old country' to attend these events. For more details go to our website: http://www.mcbirnie.myevent.com/ I would love to hear from anyone who knows they are connected or think they might have connections as I have extensive research and a comprehensive family tree which I am trying to complete prior to the gathering.
