Author: GordonPertJohnson Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/21635.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I think you need to find out more about his father, such as his age at death, or age at marriage, and where he married. If you can establish his age at a specific date, that gives a GUIDE as to his year of birth. Try also US census records to make certain that Scotland was his birth country. Once you have done that, you can either try familysearch.org (free) or scotlandspeople (govt. website in Scotland) to search the indexes for him. If you can get some indication of WHERE in Scotland he was born, that will make identification easier in the case of several of the same name. Hesler is not a Scottish surname, but people have always moved around..... Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hi there I have forgotten my geography after so many years so I'm not sure which list I should be joining. I am trying to trace my grandfather Thomas McNaughton who was born in 1871-73. I was told in the beginning that he was born in Middlesbrough / Stockton / Thornaby , England. After a number of years searching in those areas I have heard that there maybe a possibility that he was in fact born in Scotland. He appears in the 1901 UK census with his wife Mary Ann and daughters. There is a mention in the 1891 Census of a Thomas McNaughton born in Scotland in 1873 who was lodging in Stockton, Co Durham with the trade of ships riveter. I do know that he worked in the local ship yards in the Middlesbrough area as a riveter since my father worked as his Riveter Heater or Catchers Boy. I have been unable to find him in the 1881 Census. Would I be right in assuming that Glasgow was the main shipbuilding area in Scotland in those days? If so would there be a "List" more localised to Glasgow that I should join? Regards Gareth McNaughton
