Prior to that, a child or children would be taken in by close relatives (usually) or friends (occasionally). If the girl was on her own and age 13, there is a strong possibility that she got financial help as a pauper. The surviving Poor Law records (which can sometimes be incredibly helpful) should be with the local archives; in the case of Montrose this would by the Angus Archives at Forfar (they have a website). So it's unlikely to sound like Howden. However looking at it the other way, in the North East of England they hardly pronounce the R at all, so Hordon sounds something like Hawden. This could possibly then be misconstrued as Howden ? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Thank you for sharing. I was kind of hoping that it was a mix-up in the spelling on the surname as the reason I am unable to find the next branch up on the tree. Both the census and word have my GGGF coming from Scotland, but no hints as to where to look. Word has it GGF was bootlegging on one side of the river and had "partners" in Scotland who "sent" the Scotch to him. That's where the story ends, as the descendants were embarrassed that they didn't want to "hear" the details and definitely didn't pass the information along. I found out in one of my GF's ramblings towards the end... he had Alzheimers, and when I had this information I went to his little sister and asked her about it. She said she knew little about it but GF knew and said more than she knew about, but she did verify that her father was born somewhere in Scotland, but had no idea where, she believes he was a Lowlander, but was sure that further up the tree a few generations that t! hey were originally Highlanders. Heresay still at the moment, since I'm finding it very hard to find their father's birth anywhere... (that includes searching England and part of Ireland) Well thanks again. The same applied to the surname of the family - correct as far as the householder spelled it on the form. Gordon. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I know that I have family from Scotland, I'm just not sure if they are from Scotland. This is what I have: Edward S Kelley was married to Mary Alice (Mayme) Hart in September 1912. They had two children: Madeline Elizabeth (born Sept. 28 1913) and James Edward (born March 1917). Edward died in 1918 in the US during the flu epidemic and Mary Alice died in Dec. 1936. What I meant to ask was in the heavy (to my American ears) Scot's accent would Howden sound similar to HORDON to English/American ears? This is part of my brickwall and I thought, when I saw the 1901 Census for Wingate, England that the name of the Inn where GGF is listed as Innkeeper, that perhaps, the "R" and the "W" are/were sort of interchangeable when it came to the accents. (It was my GGF not my GF that was the innkeeper, but my GF still had a heavy Scot's brogue up until the day he died. I loved it, personally) Thanks Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My maiden surname is HORDON. My GF HORDON, lived in Morpeth England, and his father originally was from Scotland. My GF was an "innkeeper" at the HOWDEN ARMS in Wingate, England in 1901. My question is in the pronunciation of HOWDEN would it sound similar to HORDON with a heavy Scottish burr? My GF never lost his heavy Scot's accent or the burr. I am unable to ask him as he passed away in 1978. Thanks Jean Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
