Author: knquail Surnames: McFall McPhail Tanner Wiley Cohenus Thomas Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/21651/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have been in contact with a distant cousin, and told me about the unusual way her father and grandfather wrote the "c" in McFall...it was elevated and underlined, with 2 dashes under the line. She said her father told her it had something to do with where and who they came from. Does anyone know more about this? Also, this cousin passed along a little bit of info she acquired from another cousin who's grandfather had done a little family research. The info said that "the McFall family dates back to the barons of Scotland. They fought for the King of Scotland and were forced to flee to Ireland. Because of the unfavorable conditions in Ireland, three of the McFalls came to America. One settled in the west; another in the south; Charles settled in Pennsylvania and later lived among the Indians." Her info is all rather vague and I'm wondering if anyone can elaborate on any of this information. Who/what were the barons of Scotland? What King of Scotland did they fight for? How long were they in Ireland...a few years? A few generations? Here is the little info on my McFall ancestors...it's not much, but maybe some of the names will ring a bell with someone. My grandmother - Margaret Beatrice Tanner b. 21 Dec 1914, daughter of Florence Beatrice McFall and Marcellus Melwood Tanner Florence Beatrice McFall b. 1864 Peoria, IL, daughter of Margaret Anne Wiley and Hugh Blair McFall Hugh Blair McFall b. 16 July 1826 m. 5 Sept 1850 IL d. 16 Aug 1910 IL, son of Charles McFall and Jeanetta Cohenus (sp?) Charles McFall b. 5 April 1799 PA m. 21 Sept 1819 d. 1 June 1880, son of Charles McFall and Hannah Thomas Charles McFall (McPhail) b. 1760 VA I'm confused though...is this Charles, supposedly born in Virgina, the son of yet another Charles, who came from Scotland/Ireland, or is the info wrong and he is actually the one who came from Scotland/Ireland? If anyone has any info they can share on this family I would greatly appreciate it. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. Gordon Johnson
    3. ** Bob - the UK government had no further interest in people who were leaving this realm, so they did not ask for any documentation. The vessel had a passenger list on embarkation, but that was handed over to the authorities at the destination end. That is the documentation you will have, and it is the ONLY documentation relevant to the transportation. It is only much later that the UK government kept records of international movement of people. There was no record kept of movement within the UK, as that was all within the one jurisdiction. Gordon. (born and brought up in Greenock!) Bob said: > Trying to see if there is any type of documentation on the departure of someone from Scotland, or more in fact was there. I've got the arrival information on a gg-grandfather and the girl who would be his first wife. They left from Greenok Scotland and arrived in New York, New York on Auguts 29, 1832. Whil it is great to have the arrival info (finally) it would help to identify further family (maybe) with any type of departure record. I'm thinking that there has to be some type of tax document or something available since the people were immigrating. Any idea's?

One is South of Dumfries, on the opposite bank to Caerlaverock Castle, the seat of the Chief of the Maxwells since the 13th century or before. I was fascinated to read that your family line from Thomas Maxwell 1666 came to America via Ireland. Our Maxwell line is descended from a Maxwell who came from that area of Scotland to fight in Ireland for King James against King William. Thomas is a strong family name. I wonder if there are any overlaps? How early did your ancestor arrive in America? We know that Thomas Maxwell (born 1853) and his brother, Patrick Maxwell (born 1855) went together to New York sometime before the 1880 census. 3. Hi lt, for those with ancestors in England the Yesterdays site 9link below) has been updated with hundreds of names of persons who were found in official documents as found in Derbyshire but who came from other areas of the UK. A new catergory is Schools, listing persons from admissions registers who came from other areas or who went to other areas. Many counties of England are covered and a couple of Scottish entries are also to be found. There are of course other types of documents listed which may help you locate a missing ancestor. mike -- http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~spire/Yesterday/index.htm

I'll follow up with the Angus Archives which, in the past, has been very helpful to me. The child received a different last name that we first see when he was put in a group home at age 6. I've looked through census records for Forfar to see if anyone with that last name existed but found no one. So, he was born with one last name and at least by the age of 6 had a different last name. We had thought it might have been an adoption, but perhaps was just a name he was given upon entering the group home. The home's records don't contain any mention of where the name came from, just the new name in their registration materials. I'll follow up with the archives next. Thanks again.
