I've looked quite a bit for William Jackson - from his will I know that he was born around 1806 (poss. a year either side) which narrows it down a bit, but as this was roughly the time of the highland clearances I don't want to rule out him being from outside Glasgow. Furthermore, if I trace back through what I consider to be the most likely, how can I categorically prove that this is the correct line? Thanks again for the info roly Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: GordonPertJohnson Surnames: Jackson Hunter Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/21664.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The directory of the "Incorporation of bakers of Glasgow" lists William Jackson as having entered the Incorporation on 8th Feb 1837, as son-in-law of John Hunter. A John Hunter is listed as entered 5 June 1817, as son of John Hunter, and an earlier John Hunter is listed as entered 19th April 1791, son-in-law of Archd. [Archibald] Campbell. This in itself does not link the two John Hunters, but there is an entry in the membership list at 1890, where a Moses Hunter, who entered 27th August 1845, was the son of John Hunter, entered 5th June 1817, who was the son of John Hunter, entered 19th April 1791, son-in law of Archibald Campbell, entered 30th April 1772, apprentice of John Craig. So that gives you something on the Hunter line, but nothing on the Jackson line. EXCEPT that as William Jackson was married at the time of entry,[I see he married Susan Hunter on 7 Nov 1829 in Gorbals parish] so he would be (roughly) around 20 years of age then, and so you would be looking for a baptismal date of around 20 years previously, so around 1809, and probably in the Glasgow area. The central part of Glasgow was the parish of Barony, and a next-door parish was Gorbals, so an entry for either of these would mean the modern Glasgow. I'm getting desperate now! I have traced my family back to one William Jackson. I have his will (apparently they didn't do death certificates in 1838 in Scotland) and a copy of his Banns of Marriage. From this I have gathered that he was born in or around 1806 but where and to whom I don't know. I really need to get a copy of his marriage certificate as that would tell me his parents names, or something of the sort. What i do know is as follows: HI Anne, Wonder if you could help me as have been stuck on one person for some time now (at least 2 years!) William Jackson B. circa. 1806 M. Susan Hunter in Barony Church, Gorbals, Glasgow on 7 November 1829 D. 16/09/1838. He was made a member of the Guild of Bakers of Glasgow on 6 feb 1837. In his will there is mention of a Robert Jackson, debtor to the estate, but I have no other information on him. He is buried in the Glasgow necropolis (Gamma No. 33) but the head stone is very badly worn and is thus illegible. He was made out as the owner - I checked the records. If anyone can help I will be eternally grateful. Roly Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Gavin Sinclair. The info I have is as follows: Gavin Sinclair, born October 8, 1826, Island of Arran. He attended Irvin Academy and the Campbellton High School. He then taught school for several years and then entered Glasgow University and studied Theology in the Free Church College, Glasgow under Principal Fairburn. He was licensed to preach by the Free Church Presbytery of Kintyre at Campbellton, Scotland in 1864. Gavin emmigrated to Canada in 1873 and was a probationer in the province of Quebec, Canada for two or three years. I have his full family and Church history from this point forward but I am wondering if anyone can confirm where he was born and his education as shown. On his marriage certificate he listed his parents as James Sinclair and Elizabeth Hamilton. All assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. As I'm researching Davidson / Liddle marriages, I wondered if his forename "Discretion" was correct or a typo? What do you think please? Have you ever heard of that name being used in Scotland? The marriage was at Gargunnock, Stirling on 16 Apr 1784. Any ideas would be very much appreciated please. I haven't finished, but have gone far enough to know that he is right at least as far as my side goes. My GGGrandfather and mother were William Simmons and Jane Martin from SC. They wound up moving to Monroe County Al. sometimes during their earlier years of marriage since I find my GGrandfather as being born in Monroe County Al. in 1848. He had my Grandfather, Samuel R. Simmons, with a Frances Simmons in 1867 in Monroe, Cty. I don't if this will help you or not but I am pretty sure my line was from Scotland and that area. Just for information, the surname McFall is a variant spelling of the more usual McPhail. Gordon.
The Selkirk Court Book, 1503-1541 was transcribed and published in two parts by the Scottish Record Society, 1960 (covering 1503-1531) and 1969 (covering 1531-1541), but without any index. With the approval of the Scottish Record Society, I have compiled genealogical indexes to the two parts, with the first index available on my website for some time. Work on the second index was completed at the end of 2008 and the finalised work has now been put up on my website. So there are two indexes to consult, free of charge. If you do not have access to the publications indexed, I can provide page copies as required, for a small fee per page, with a minimum charge of 5 pounds to cover copying, post and packing. Scans can be provided as an alternative. The minimum 5 pound charge still applies, but more copies can be scanned instead. These, and other new indexes to Scottish books, are listed at: > http://www.kinhelp.co.uk/KinHelp/genealogical-indices/a-listing-of-gordons-genealogical-indices-1/ Happy hunting! Gordon Johnson.
