Meant to say, I'm in Scotland and do a fair bit of family research in Scotland. If you need a hand or pointers, just say. I'll try and help. I've never tried it, however, I believe you can email off thread if you don't want to post details publicly. Dave Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Nairn is a town not far from Inverness, just over 15 miles NE. Scotland is split into different counties, called Shires. http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/areanair/index.html http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/INV/ http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/usmapindexes/northcentral.html Hope this helps. My Antique Atlas shows Nairn-shire, between Moray-shire, and Inverness Firth. There are two towns marked, Nairn and Auldearn, and two rivers, Nairn and Findhorn. "Nairn" was often mentioned in the TV Series of "Hamish MacBeth". HTH. Sandair (Sr), published in 1923. The Pate family is mentioned on pages 201 to 204 The American Pate family can trace its roots back to the British Isles, but unable to tie to specific family lines there. We were a prominent family in early colonial Virginia, with the first arrival c. 1636. This family was related to a London merchant, Edward Pate. This book supposedly has information on the background of the Pates, origin of the name, and where they came from and traveled to from 1148 to early 1900s. I will greatly appreciate any information anyone could provide. A. J. Pate Houston, Texas Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He was married to Jane Hunter (b. approx. 1786 in England). DNA testing has confirmed that Robert likely descended from the "Earls of Morton" line of Douglases, but how is he connected? I have recently received a tip that seems promising: DOUGLAS, Robert- Christening Gender: Male Christening Date: 10 May 1778 Recorded in: Kirknewton, Midlothian, Scotland Father: Alexander DOUGLAS Mother: Janet HENDRIE Robert & Jane may have spent some time in Ireland, because their first child was supposedly born there in 1817. I have learned that they came to the U.S. with David Hunter (Jane's brother) and his wife Lydia Douglas (presumably Robert's sister) - not sure when or from where. By 1820 they were living in Franklin County, Vermont where the rest of their children were born. By the mid-1840's they were living in Stanbridge, Missisquoi Co., Quebec where they spent the rest of their lives. Both died and are buried in Stanbridge, Que. I will list their children in case that helps: Alexander (b. 1817 in Ireland?) - married Esther Phelps in Que., d. 1871 in Stanbridge Elizabeth (b. 1823 in Vt.) - married Hiram Hauver in Que., moved to Nebraska William (b. 1824 in Vt.) - married Mary (Watson?) in Que. David (b. 1826 in Vt., d. 1853 in Que.) Martha (b. 1827 in Vt., d. 1867 in Que.) Jane (b. 1830) - may have followed her sister to Nebraska John (b. 1833) - followed his sister to Nebraska Robert (b. 1834, d. 1867 in Que.) Lydia (b. 1837) - followed her sister to Nebraska Does any of this ring any bells for anyone? Any leads are greatly appreciated! I've got the McMaken surname a bit back in my tree for a few generations, but I'm at a loss as to whether its Scottish or Irish. The farthest back I've been able to trace it was a John McMaken born in Ireland about 1697. He later came to America, and married an Elizabeth Jordan - who was born in Scotland about 1700. Not sure when they married, or where. I know bits and pieces on their lives moving forward, but I can't find anything on their parents. The family written record I have states the family came from Scotland to America in the early 1600s, but as I said, John was born in Ireland.
