I tried the Police, Procurator Fiscal with no luck. On a wonderful trip home to Scotland I went to the Sheriff Court on the Royal Mile as I had recalled going there with my Mother to collect her compensation money. Went to the Archives and they directed me to a building located at the West End and a wonderful lady assisted me and I got a copy of the court records, however, some of the actual paperwork was lost. The Achives personnel should be able to give you the information on the building I was directed to. Goog Luck. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Liz_Hayward Surnames: Nimmo Classification: marriage Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22239/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, This is probably a really obvious question - but I am completely unable to trace a marrriage which took place, we believe, in Scotland in the 1920s. Where would I begin please? Although the couple later lived in London I can find no trace of their marrriage in the England and Wales records, so assume they married in their native Scotland. The names are Andrew Inglis Nimmo and Kath ... I have no surname for Kath, or indeed her full Christian name. Andrew was born on 22 Jan 1900. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be very grateful. Many thanks, Liz Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: bendmac1 Surnames: Mackey, Alexander Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22238/mb.ashx Message Board Post: MANY postings on this board over the years about these two, but most are ten years old or greater, so revisiting these folks for additional information...know this is a LONG shot, but looking for assistance! John Mackey, born ~1726, (reportedly in Ireland, but I think it was Scotland) married Ann Alexander, born ~1735 (again, reportedly in Ireland but think she was born in Scotland as well). I believe they were part of the Ulster-Scots migration to Northern Ireland. They married (reportedly) in Ireland ~1751, and that same year, immigrated to America. Arrived in Pennsylvania (via Philadelphia?), settled there for a few years, had two children (Mary and James), then moved to North Carolina. Info seems to indicate that John and Ann made the trip along with John's two brothers, William and Thomas. Have decent documentation (early census, war and land records, etc.) AFTER their arrival in America...family name then was spelled "Mackey" but may have been variant (Mackay, McKie, Mackie, etc.) in Scotland/Ireland. Any help, assistance or suggestions to continue search in Scotland/Ireland would be greatly appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. Gordon Johnson
    3. Gravestones with death dates of the early b1800s can be perfectly readable. Much depends of the type of stone used. Granite stones are very hard wearing, whereas sandstone ones are susceptible to flaking and you can lose an entire inscription. Many people could not afford a gravestone, and so are not recorded this way, but the parish register (OPR) might have a note of the burial: Usually just the name and date; nothing about relationships. Worst of all are stones which just contain initials and a year! Gordon Johnson.

    3. Thanks Gordon. We read a newspaper obit which said Farquahars sister was the graanddaughter of Donald McLeay of the 77th Rosshire Highlanders, but have not figuured out what that really meant. A cousin says Farquhar married Ann Campbell in Aug 1820 in Urray. In 1841 Ann and some of her children are in Kilmorack,Inverness, where she is described as a crofters widow. her children Anne,Colin, Margaret and Alexander were there too. Farquhar and Anne Mcleay had a dau Margaret who married Findlay Fraser from Beauly, Kilmorack. Margaret and Findlay had a dau Anne also. I cannot imagine a gravestone being readable if it was put in in 1840 Elizabeth On 1/11/2010 11:11 PM, Gordon Johnson wrote: > Urray has NO death/burial registers at all, so your only chance of > finding his death is if it appears on a gravestone. > Identifying his birth is also difficult, if you don't know in advance > who his parents were.
