    3. The given name Gilbert was very popular in the Carrick district of Ayrshire although it may come from the Gaelic Gille-brigte. When it shows in 17th century Ulster it is usually a sign of a planter from SW Scotland in my view. However I would be very interested if anyone has any counter-evidence ie Ulster records from before 1600 using this given name.
