Regarding the Smyth, Davidson, McAleese pedigree, I thought I let everyone on the list know that I did indeed enter the 6-foot long taped together pedigree written in pencil into Family Search in 2016. A year or so ago I sent a copy of the whole thing with the stories to a relative of the group who was extremely grateful. I found one connection myself to my family in Antrim which surfaced from the chart! Susan Burton -----Original Message----- From: scotch-irish-bounces@rootsweb.com <scotch-irish-bounces@rootsweb.com> On Behalf Of LINDA MERLE Sent: Sunday, March 1, 2020 11:10 AM To: List <scotch-irish@rootsweb.com> Subject: [S-I] Re: Goodbye forever! Thanks so much, for the last time, for your kind words and thanks. We're continuing at groups.io (See, I said I wasn't infallible!!). I am going to upload some files soon that two elderly sisters gave to me over 15 years ago. They were in their 90s and soon to leave us. Never married. They had inherited their great aunt's genealogy. This was of one of the major families in I think County Antrim. Many lines went to Australia, where they became rich, as well as America. It was hand written in pencil on a series of pages taped together. Over five feet wide, as I recall. I scanned them a couple years ago and someone from this list who was off on a missionary venture in Salt Lake at the library was going to enter them into Family Search. I will check to see if that was done or not. In any case I will combine the scans into a PDF along with some written history the ladies gave me. Maybe some of us will have connections. This was a Smyth family. SO many more possibilities at the new site. You can even link to your google docs, sharing with 'us' while having control of your own stuff. I did the DNA test at Ancestry this Christmas. I had previously tested at 23andme.com, Sorensons, way back in the 1990s, and ftdna.com . However the Ancestry stuff is marvelous because it can leverage online trees. In the Trulines page it'll list DNA connections by ancestor. Thus one lady, working on her son in law's line in Australia, contacted me a couple weeks ago. We seemed related via my great grandmother Mary Gardner Mason. She lived in Durham, England, migrating with my great grandfather Peter Mason around 1871, to Michigan and then Ohio. We've been working together to prove the connection via one of her brothers. I last worked on this line in the 1990s so some of my research isn't the greatest. Hopefully we can get the line farther than we have in England. With this Trulines if anybody else shares DNA there is some chance. Anyway .... once again, forever here ....by! Join us in the new group (www.groups.io ) (I hope) for even more fun. Hi folk, as of tomorrow this list and all the others at rootweb will cease to exist as interactive lists. Apparently they will remain as archives. The replacement group is now situated athttp://www.groups.ic . Several posts have been made about how to join. ONLY YOU CAN JOIN. So don't send an email asking the admin to add you. The admin cannot. (The admin apologizes for posts that sound like she could add you. We all got a learning curve. Not God, just admin here.....). The reason why this is happening for those who wonder is Ancestry owns Rootsweb and can do what it wants. that is all I know. You can take it up with Ancestry if you want more details. If you, for some reason, are unable to visit a webpage, you can email me and I can send you an INVITATION to join the new list. Y ou will then have to follow the directions to join it. Below is the statement fromhttp://www.rootsweb.com Mailing Lists Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the email addresses in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team Looking for to seeing you in our new home athttp://www.groups.io . I encourage members of the new group to get in the habit of using the browser interface as it has a lot more functionality. Email lists are SO 1990s.. I did not see the original note so thanks for posting this. I didn't know messages could still get posted and received through the Scotch-Irish group at Rootsweb. I can tell you plenty about Pollocks but don't know what your questions are. The Pollock family all goes back to Renfrewshire Scotland as early as the 12th century. The name comes from an area anciently known as Pollok along the Whitecart River on SW side of Glasgow. The Polloks had a very strong relationship with the Maxwells going back to the 1300s when Maxwells were given some lands escheated from the Pollocks. That branch of the Maxwells became known as the Maxwells of Pollok. Their family seat is a large mansion in Pollok Country Park known as Pollok House. Great place to visit if you are there, designated as the best parks in Europe a few years back. Many Pollocks moved to Ulster during the Plantation in 1600s and are found scattered all around, most commonly in Tyrone, Londonderry and Down. And of course a great number of them joined the Scotch-Irish exodus to America in the 1700's, so they are all over the place and it is hard to figure out how one branch connects to another. We have a successful Polk-Pollock-Pogue DNA project which you can join at FTDNA, currently about 330 participants. I am the Project Admin. If you want to join, and have autosomal DNA test results from Ancestry or 23andMe, you can transfer them to FTDNA at no cost. Not to be snippy, but the original invite does say that you can join by replying to the email. People were just following directions............................................. Like going to the homepage: > > https://groups.io/g/Scotch-Irish-Gen > > Sending "Accept" "Please add me" "I would like to join the next list" and so on to THIS list or to me will not work. If you can do that I haven't figured out how yet. Twenty more of these and I may just delete them if I am feeling hostile enough. > > Please plug in that brain. > > Linda Merle (frustrated admin) > > _______________________________________________ > > _______________________________________________ > Email preferences: http://bit.ly/rootswebpref > Unsubscribe https://lists.rootsweb.com/postorius/lists/scotch-irish@rootsweb.com > Privacy Statement: https://ancstry.me/2JWBOdY Terms and Conditions: https://ancstry.me/2HDBym9 > Rootsweb Blog: http://rootsweb.blog > RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb community
Hi folks, there is ONLY ONE WAY to subscribe to the new list. And that is to do it yourself. THE LIST ADMIN CANNOT SUBSCRIBE YOU. I could sent another Invite but you folks didn't use it before so it seems kinda futile. So you can find the old invite and click on the link (DO NOT send the email to this list or to me. It won't work.) OR 1.visit groups.io 2. create a logon 3. search for Scotch-Irish-Gen in the handy dandy search field in the upper right (I think). 4. Join it. I do not know if this link will take you right to the list but you can try it: https://groups.io/g/Scotch-Irish-Gen/topics Hope it works. The new list or rather group has many more features. You can't really use them if replying and reading with email. You need to navigate to the webpage. Then you can read the topics and replies to them (the menu is down the left side of your screen). You can edit your topics and answers. You can delete them. You can use colors and different fonts. You can insert Hashtags into the subject. Most Administrative comments, like how to use Hashtags, are in the left hand column. Click on Hashtag. There they are, in colors. Click on Admin and learn how to use a few new features. Mostly Hashtags are being used to identify surnames, so by clicking on one you can see all the topics on that surname. If you click on Subscription on the left menu, you can tweek your delivery: Individual Messages You will receive each message in an individual email. Full Featured Digest Group up to 12 messages together as one email instead of being sent individually (rich formatting). Plain Digest Group up to 12 messages together as one email instead of being sent individually (plain formatting). Daily Summary A daily summary, delivered in the morning, of the group's messages from the previous day. Special Notices Only You will only receive special notices from the moderators. No Email You will receive no emails. ----- No Email means you either went on vacation or you are reading the group over the website and don't need any emails cluttering up your life. You can add attachments to your topics as well. However you do have join first. Linda Merle (Overwhelmed list admin) I'm new at this as well.
Hi John, I am glad you want to subscribe to the new group. There is a lot of conversation there right now. However only YOU can subscribe to the new group. No matter how much you want to, you must take action and subscribe yourself. There are two ways: 1. find the Invite message sent to you earlier. READ IT. Click on the link. 2. Go to groups.io and create a free logon. Then join the Scotch-Irish-Gen list. You can find it by searching using the Search field in the upper right hand corner. If you search for rootsweb you will find many Rootsweb lists that are now on groups.io . These are the only ways to join. I can send out another Invite but no doubt 200 of you will just hit the reply button again and say "I would like to join" or some such. Those people will soon be wondering what happened. What happened is they failed to read an email and follow instructions. Look luck, John et all. I searched in the GroupManagementForum and found this: " In the Advanced Preferences section of your subscription(s) either choose to receive "All Messages" - except the ones you mute; or receive "Following Only". If you elect to receive "All Messages" then there is a Mute this thread link at the bottom of the messages you receive. Use it and you then do not receive further messages in that thread. If you elect to receive "Following Only" and "First Message also" then there is a Follow this thread link at the bottom of those thread starters. Use it if the thread interests you. Once you're following a thread I think the link becomes an "Unfollow Thread" link. On the web, these tools are available primarily in the Messages and Hashtags pages of the Your Groups page (click on the Groups.io logo in the upper left corner). The work I think Mark is missing is to bring this functionality to the group level, as viewing filters while looking at a single group's archive." Only when I go to subscriptions I don't see an advanced preferences. There are also hashtags. I haven't explored how to use them yet. There is some info in the Help section as well. Maybe we an have CHAT about it? We'll put the date in our CALENDAR and upload some PHOTOS!! I will ask about threading on the above mentioned forum. It's been an incredible day. Volunteered to take local feral cat rescue lady (living on disability with blind daughter) to vet today. Vet who does low cost care for feral cats wasn't even returning phone calls. Visit took more than 4 hours because vet was poorly organized and very busy and cat would not be touched so they had to sedate him. He has a urinary blockage. Also ear fungus. Lady on the local pet helper group in Facebook volunteered to pay for the visit and to phone vet to tell him. However she never phoned. I ended up paying the $700 bill. I'll scan it and post to the Pet Helper group. Thanks, my brother, who left me a small amount of money. No diagnosis till the lab work comes back. I may phone the low cost vet and complain loudly. Or just defame their name in the Pet Helper group. However as liquor gives me heartburn I am going to take a bath and crawl into bed. I will research threads, as I'd like them too, once the bill is scanned and uploaded to Facebook. What you do is log onto FamilySearch.org. Family Search has the largest genealogical collection in the world and they are bringing most of what they got online, free. Right now there is more online that you can process in your life. (It may not appear that way because you don't know how to use it effectively). Under the menu item Family Tree is a huge shared tree. Some right stuff, some wrong. You can easily add or change it and the bots will add more people it finds in records. You can set flags to be notified if anybody changes things. You can discover living cousins who have more records and stories of your Bowmans. Under the Search menu item are search of..... Records. They have microfilmed zillions of WVA and PA Courthouse records and where they've been indexed you can search for records relating to a Bowman. One way is use the Tree to navigate to the target Bowman. On the right are suggested records. Check them out. You can add them to tree with a click or two. (You can also start a private tree and add to it). Or search from the Search Records menu item. Catalog. This is the card catalog. Navigate to Bowman. See stuff. If it's online a click will take it to scanned books, loose collections of stuff donated by other Bowman fans, etc. Or to your favorite WVA or PA County to find all the stuff filmed from that locale. Don't forget to check the state, towns, and counties. WIKI: Stuck? Can't find nothing more? Then learn. it has pages on how to research in each state and county with live links to resources Family Search has. It or Catalog will also tell you what resource has a collection if it doesn't. When I was living in Southern Cal the local libraries were full of stuff from VA and the Carolinas, etc, descendants of residences there had moved to So CAL and, wanting to research, built up the libraries. The LDS Library in Los Angeles is the second largest and was the only one (20 years ago) that had the whole Irish collection, for starters. All in one spot. Or you can drive all over ireland trying to get to various repositories during open hours. I am overlooking all t he free resources online elsewhere like at the PA website. Happy Hunting! The Bowmans I'm hunting for are one of my great-grandmother's parents, and I found them through my backwards research. Through a major stroke of luck, Samuel Bowman applied for a Revolutionary War pension and the ensuing paperwork resulted in an enormous amount of data. If it wasn't for that, I would have no idea the family came from Ireland. I'm sure there are records hidden away in county courthouses in West Virginia and Pennsylvania and New York State, but I don't have the time or the means to investigate them. > > The Draper Collection is new to me and I'll investigate it. But my Bowman's were farmers and their descendants were farmers and mine laborers, so I can't imagine that they left much of an historical footprint. Looking at Members, we got 94 pages with 20 each. Dang, that's a lot. Hopefully will have time to start working on our WIKI (lower left corner, now empty). Please note we can now upload files, in case you want to share something relevant. Other things we can do: Figure out how to use subgroups. If you click on Help (upper right menu) it might explain. Figure out how to use hashtags. For example we can do a Bowman Hashtag so all future Bowman researchers can find Bowman posts (Or if the Bowmans get annoying I can mute just the Bowmans .... but that might be dangerous so I won't!} More info below for those who want to make suggestions. (Note: I do not understand most of what is below either). Linda Merle (List Manager) >From the Help pages: Hashtags -------- A hashtag is a word or phrase containing no spaces prefixed with the hash character, #, not suffixed to another word or phrase. Applying hashtags to messages You "tag" a message with a hashtag by including it somewhere in the subject line of the message. For example: * My name is Mark #intro * Seeking #advice for a #rosebush with blackened leaves Hashtags already in use in the group can be applied to a message by selecting from the "Add Tags" dropdown menu that appears below the subject line. Or, they can simply be typed into the subject line. Typing a hashtag into a subject line will create a new hashtag for the group if it did not exist before. A new hashtag can also be created by clicking on "Create Hashtag" at the bottom of the hashtag list. [NOTE FROM LINDA: you see these dropdowns if you are posting from the website. If you are sending an email from your email, you won't see hashtag dropdowns below the subject. I like the Internet interface a lot. Go to groups.io, logon. Y ou'll see your lists under Your Lists. Click on one. On left is menu. Click on Messages to view messages or New Topic to make a new post.] A hashtag has an effect only if placed on the first message in a topic, and will be applied to all messages within the topic. (Note that although it is possible to add a hashtag to the subject of an emailed reply by editing the subject, this has no effect; the hashtag will be included in the subject line for members receiving messages via email, but will not be included in the subject line of the archived message or of any other messages within the topic.) There is a limit of five hashtags per topic *Uses of hashtags* Hashtags have several uses within groups.io, including searching and controlling certain behaviors of topics and messages. *Searching:* Hashtags can be searched on to easily find all messages tagged with it. If a group uses a hashtag called #intro for new member introductions, for example, then clicking on it in the hashtag list will produce all messages in which new group members have introduced themselves. *Muting:* Group members who read their messages via email can click on "Mute" for any hashtag at the bottom of the email to stop receiving messages tagged with that hashtag. (Note: hashtags set to "Special" cannot be muted. See below.) *Automatic time-out:* If a hashtag’s Topic Duration is set, topics tagged with it will be deleted (or, if specified, locked) after that period of time. This can be a useful feature when a topic will be obsolete after a certain amount of time, for example messages about items for sale. *Special notices:* If a hashtag is set to Special, all messages tagged with it, including the original message in the topic and all replies, will be sent as Special Notices. Note: hashtags set to Special cannot be muted. Also, only moderators and owners can send Special Notices. If a normal subscriber replies, their message will be sent as a normal message. *No Email:* If a hashtag is set to No Email, all messages tagged with it will be posted to the web but not sent out as emails. *Moderated:* If a hashtag is set to Moderated, messages sent to topics tagged with it will require approval by a moderator. *Replies Unmoderated:* If a hashtag is set to Replies Unmoderated, messages in reply to topics tagged with it will be unmoderated, even if members who reply are moderated or the group itself is moderated. *Locked:* If a hashtag is set to Locked, topics tagged with it will be locked upon creation. *Reply to:* Setting the Reply to to something other than "Same as group" will override the group's reply to setting. Note: If a hashtag is set to Reply Only To Sender, all responses will go privately to the sender and not to the group; this setting overrides the group setting "Remove Other Reply Options" in a group set to Reply to Sender. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group. Thanks for this, Linda! You can also choose your delivery method. I have chosen to get a daily “digest” which will send me one e-mail with a summary of all the topics discussed that day. Groups.io works similarly to the Yahoo groups which were also recently shut down.. this time by Verizon who bought Yahoo last year. Some of the FamilyTreeDNA Haplogroup Projects had long-standing forums there, and some of them moved to Groups.io. The ones I was involved in, though (R-L21 and R-L513) chose not to for some reason. I think this forum will work out well and save our collective inboxes!! Congratulations and thanks again for the hard work, Linda. – Tom Little Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: LINDA MERLE Sent: Friday, January 10, 2020 8:11 AM To: Scotch-Irish-Gen@groups.io Subject: [S-I] [Scotch-Irish-Gen] Membership Update #admin Hi folks, We seem to have arrived here at Groups.io. Linda Merle (List Manager) From the Help pages: Hashtags -------- A hashtag is a word or phrase containing no spaces prefixed with the hash character, #, not suffixed to another word or phrase.
