List, I should have added that my CARREL / CARROLL are Y-DNA haplogroup R1a. The spelling changed from Carrel to Carroll about 1850 (in the U.S.A.). The first 12 marker panel results from FTDNA are: 13, 25, 16, 11, 11, 15, 12, 12, 10, 14, 11, 31. (DY8VJ) The bold italics are identical to the original 6 marker values that Capelli et al found in Shetland and Orkney, but nearly absent in the rest of the British Isles, and apparently formed the basis of his Norse Viking theory. On the other hand Dr. Faux assures me there is no evidence of surname Carrel or variant in Shetland or Orkney, but perhaps in Scotland itself but that it is an Irish name.
