    1. [SCOCONEE-L] Matthew KNOX, 1803-1856
    2. Seeking info on the parents of Matthew KNOX (my GGgrandfather), born February 27, 1803, in South Carolina. He married Belinda NICHOLSON in old Pendleton District SC in 1827. Belinda was a daughter of William NICHOLSON. She was born January 10, 1809, and died January 7, 1851, according to her tombstone in Mississippi. [An 1827 newspaper in old Pendleton announced her marriage to Matthew. But it incorrectly gave her name as "Melinda."] Matthew and Belinda seem to have lived in the western part of Pendleton District, an area that became Pickens District/County SC when old Pendleton was dissolved. That area today is in Oconee County SC. Some researchers have said Matthew was son of a certain John KNOX who left a will in Pickens District and died there in 1828. Others have said Matthew was the son of James KNOX, who in turn might have been the brother of John. I have not, however, been able to locate any evidence from primary sources that shows a relationship of my Matthew KNOX to either of these men -- apart from the fact that the 1828 will of John KNOX does name "Matthew" as one of his sons. (Several researchers have told me that James KNOX also had a son named "Matthew," but I have found no independent verification from primary sources.) Matthew KNOX and family migrated from SC to TN (county unknown) about 1833. They then moved to Chickasaw Co MS in 1837.They apparently travelled with members of the REID family, who gave their name to the village of Reid in NE Calhoun Co MS. The REID family are thought to have been Matthew's relatives, probably on his mother's side. Matthew's mother may have been Frances REID. But some secondary sources from SC list her as Frances MILLER. At least one secondary source reports Frances was born as a REID, but was adopted by some MILLER relatives and therefore might have used either surname. I have not been able to locate primary sources bearing on this question. (The will of the John KNOX who died in SC in 1828 refers to his wife only as "Fanny." Several documents from Pickens Co SC indicate the presence of a "Frances KNOX" or "Mrs. Fanny KNOX" at least through 1860. I have not located any documents to link her with Matthew KNOX of Chickasaw Co MS.) Matthew KNOX died in a logging accident August 13, 1856. He is buried in the Reid family cemetery in NW Chickasaw Co MS. His children settled mainly in Calhoun and Pontotoc Counties MS. Any comments, suggestions, or additional info will be appreciated.
