I am looking for information on the following names in Oconee County. SMITH, LEE, GASOWAY (GASSAWAY), SHED (SHEDD), LEE Most originate in the Long Creek. The Smiths coming from Rabun Co., Georgia. My father's side of the family is the SMITH line. I'll only mention the most recent. Henry Smith b. 1832 in Ga. married Betty Dockins b. 1828 in Ga. Their son Calvin Cicero Smith b. 1849 in Ga. married Elizabeth Justus b. 1847 in Ga. Their son Russell Clinton Smith b. June 13, 1881 in Rabun Co., Ga. married Polly Jane Lee in Oconee Co., SC. They are both buried at Long Creek Baptist Church. Russell and Polly were my grandparents. Polly's parents were Marcus Davis Lee and Nancy Mahala Gasoway. The parents of Marcus Davis Lee were John Lee Jr. born Dec. 25, 1833. He married Polly Shed b. April 16, 1835. I have enjoyed reading the Heritage Book of Oconee County. I have a lot of relative in the book. My family on both sides Cobb and Smith are in the book. Of course there would be a mix up - my parent's pictures were switched with my grandparent's pictures. Thank you for any information. Gail Boyle, Bel Air, Maryland

DORSEY/KELLEY A good idea! I am only looking for one, or possibly two, names in Pickens/Oconee Counties. However, I have a very complex problem. I have written it here before but will repeat in case there are new list members. Apologies to those who have read it before. I am searching for the family of E. H. DORSEY who, I believe, left Wallhalla in the early 1860's. His wife was Louisa. I have documentation that my great-great grandmother was Louisa Bouknight. (I also have Ivan Bauknight's book on the Bauknights and can trace that line back to the late 1500's thanks to Ivan.) John and Louisa had at least one child in SC, John A. (circa 1866. My great-grandfather was John Alexander). E. H. 26, Louisa 22, and John A 4 were in Wallhalla for the 1860 census. E. H. was a farmer. In a house nearby were, Peter DORSEY 55, born NC, Mary A. 24, born SC and Wm. H., 2, and John W. 1. Backing up in SC, I went to the 1850 census for Pickens County. There were three households with the name DORSEY and two with the name DORSY. One of the families is surely the same family enumerated twice because of a move. They are John H. DORSEY, 26, blacksmith, born NC, Sarah, 17, William O. 6/12, Amanda, 16, born and Margaret Riley, 10. The next DORSEY family was John DORSY 78, born NC, Mary 76, born NC, Mary, 50, born NC, Peter 40, born NC. Also living with them was Alexander Shields, 14, born NC. Also found Andrew Dorsey, 26, born SC, Nancy, 18. And in a different house, Andrew DORSEY, 22, born SC, Isabell, 18, and Amanda, 15. (I think all the Amanda's were the same person just moving around but, of course, can't prove that.) I suppose it is even possible the two Andrews were the same. The story gets confusing at this point. Apparently E. H. got into some trouble somewhere. Perhaps he didn't care to fight in the Civil War. There are several family stories-one includes shooting a sheriff and one involves slaves set on revenge. Most people favor the sheriff story. More recently, a lady from another list has sent me the following account from a letter someone had found in an attic in the Midwest, "To show you just how ticklish things were, I will tell you about what happened to a man by the name of DORSEY. A short time previous to this he went out to Pickens, S.C. to live. His wife had a child and some old women were joking her about naming him Jeff Davis, and others were calling him Abe Lincoln. From that it went abroad that he had named it Lincoln, so a mob got together and called on and nearly whipped him to death, thinking he was a UNIONIST. So he moved back to GEORGIA and the people of the 426th Militia District organized to put down such acts during the excitement that prevailed, just as a home guard would." I wonder if there is any way to corroborate that. At any rate, between 1860 and 1870, E. H. DORSEY disappears from SC, GA, and TN. It appears that he changed his name to Harvey KELLEY and moved to Cumberland County, Tennessee with a stopover in Georgia. I don't know where he stayed but there is a group of Dorsey's in Clayton, Co. Ga. who appear to have migrated from Burke, Co., NC as a result of the Cherokee Land Lottery in 1834. Though I do not have documentation of this name change, it is supported by strong family tradition in several branches of our Kelley family who had not been in touch for many years. I have not been able to connect the E. H. Dorsey in Wallhalla with any other Dorseys. It is an intriguing mystery but I wouldn't mind if someone threw me another clue! In addition, I suspect that the Kelley name may have come from some other connection--perhaps his mother (just guessing here). So I am also interested in the KELLEY name for both Pickens and Oconee County. I have a lot of information about the Dorsey family in America. I can match up a lot of the people in NC, SC, and GA with a very detailed genealogy of a Dorsey family who originated (in this country anyway) in Maryland. I just can't fit E. H. Dorsey in anywhere. I will gratefully accept any and all clues! Hi Everyone! Last week I got into a conversation on the Virginia Roots list about the circuit-riding preacher, Lorenzo Dow. Lots of us have a Lorenzo Dow 'Somebody' in our data. Since I have a lot of information about the 'original' Lorenzo Dow, they asked if I would post a web page about him. He was born in 1777 in Coventry, CT. Well, I ran home from work and put up the Lorenzo Dow page after supper! I hope you find it interesting. He was something! I can just see him jumping out of a church window onto a horse and riding away shouting that he would be back one year from the day! He did, too! The site is: http://www.acun.com/dentons The link to the article about Lorenzo Dow is about half way down the first page. I hope you enjoy the stories! Blessings! Sue Montgomery-Cook
William Kelly and Sarah Frazier married 9 June 1824, he from SC and she from NC. We believe they lived in Pickens Co, later Oconee Co. Seeking marriage license, 1830 and 1840 census records, deeds, wills, parents' names -- in short, anything! Or, advice on where to search myself. They reportedly had 8 children while living in SC: Sanford abt. 1830, John 1833, Martha 1836, Mary 1838, William H. 1840, Thomas D. 1842, Sarah 1844, James Burrough 1845. Then they moved to Franklin Co, GA. I hope to visit SC in early November and would appreciate any information or advice. James Burrough was my g-grandfather. Please respond to tbay@columbus.rr.com Thank you, Fran Bay P.S. We think Owen was his brother. He and wife Harriet reportedly had 5 children born in SC and also moved to GA.
The 1830 census of Pendleton Cty.list a William Oakley, ( GGGrandfather ) Where William and family came from is a great mystery. In 1830's they move to Abbeville Cty. where Wiliam is listed in the 1840 census as being in Mfg. & Trades. William dies in the 1840's and Catherine his widow moves back to Pendleton Cty. in the 1850's. My GGrandfather John Oakley bought land and farmed around the Tunnell Hill Post Office area. He married Sarah J. Gibson. Catherine buried a son & daughter in this area. My grandfather buried a daughter in this area during the Civil War. Where was the Tunnell Hill Post Office ?? Where are the churches or graveyards ?? Where would William work in Mfg. & Trades?? Does anyone know anything about this family?? Thank You for your time and trouble. Derrell Oakley Teat
Hi! I thought I would let y'all know that I have a lot of Carolina families represented in my database at my web site for the Denton and related families. There are over 15,000 people in the database, plus a lot of other information on the site. If any of you have Dentons in your lines, I would love to hear from you! There are also some down-loadable gedcom files for families other than Denton that I have in my at-home database, such as Hunt, Moore, Plumlee, Cooper, Chastain, O'Dell, French, Shipman, Baker and Huff. All of these families intersect in some way with the Dentons, but have a great deal more information in the individual gedcoms than is on the database at the site. There is a lot of other information on the site as well that you might find interesting, as well. The address is: http://www.acun.com/dentons I hope you find something of value! Blessings! Does anyone know what happened to the Oconee Co., SC Web Site. Kathleen Burnett
I found a notation in an 1812 widow's pension request for Elizabeth (Reese) Butler (husband - Moses) about a Henry Reece. The year was 1878. One daughter, Jane Reid, appeared to swear that her father and mother were married until he died in 1855 and that Elizabeth hadn't remarried. At the same time, the husband of another daughter, Mary Ann Low, was called upon to testify to the same information. A man named Henry Reece, age 69, who lived in Oconee County, South Carolina, swore that he had known Elizabeth for 58 years. If anyone knows anything about this man, I'd appreciate the information. I'm actually searching for the family of Elizabeth Reese Butler, but Henry may be a link. There was a Henry D. Reese on the Pendleton CO, SC, censuses of 1810 and 1820. Could he be Henry of Oconee's father? Thanks, Judy Dixon Judith H. Dixon Joplin, MO dixonj@ipa.net http://www.ipa.net/~dixonj/
