    2. Elizabeth, The Keowee Courier is still printed every Wed. Ann Rogers worked very hard to index it and the Tugaloo Tribune. She also did a graveyard index on file cards which is more accurate than the books. The library is open Mon and Tues. until 9:00 PM Wed, Thurs. Fri. closes at 6:00, Sat. 9:00 until 1:00 and in the school year on Sun 1:00 until 5:00. There are three microfilm readers with printers and a copy machine in the SC room. Copies and microfilm are only 10 cents. For a library of its size it is one of the best. We do not have much microfilm other than the censuses and the Keowee Courier, and the Tugaloo Tribune. Greenville Co. Library in Greenville has a lot more book and film and is a lot bigger. But Oconee is nicer than Anderson, Greenwood, Newberry or Union (the other libraries I have worked in). I am proud of the job our little county has done in this area. Hope to see you all there someday! Susan Brock Booker

Jennifer Gilbert Gibson ------------------------------------------------------------......... Jennifer: The Keowee Courier is printed from Walhalla and has covered most the area for over 100 years. There was also a Tugaloo Tribune printed from (I think) Westminster. There are some Pitts families in the Oakway area but I couldn't say whether this is what you're looking for. If you are fairly close it would probably benefit you to visit the Oconee Library in Walhalla SC. They have old Keowee Couriers on microfilm and someone has done an excellent job of indexing the names--you don't even have to know what date you're looking for. Same with the Tugaloo Tribune. As for the names: some of the surnames are familiar, but not from back then. I'm not connected to any of them that I know of. I also have tunnel vision when I research. Allen

    1. Questions about the county and some names
    2. Hi all, I am in search of information on my great grandfather. His name is Elias Richard HOLMES. He was born in Ga abt 1868 and d. 4 Sep 1914. E. Richard HOLMES married Lucy A. STONE (daughter of Robert and Susan Harbin STONE) bef. 1899. E. Richard and Lucy Stone HOLMES had the following children: Ida Agatha (my grandmother.. who married Horace L. GILBERT in Anderson County in 1919), Susan A. (who married John TURNER), R.B, Rosser, Mary J., and Roy HOLMES - all born in Oconee County. I know that his wife Lucy A. STONE was of this county and I have gone to census records of Georgia and found that Elias Richard was the son of Hiram R. and Mary J. HOLMES. Mary J. (E. Richard's mother) lived with E. Richard and his family in 1910 and I assume she also passed away about the same time that her son did. Elias Richard also bought 56 acres of land from a T. D. POORE on 21 Nov 1907. His land was still under mortgage at the time of his death. A list of bills shows that money had to be paid to the KEOWEE COURIER. The title to real estate says that the land was in what T. D. POORE called his "Pitts lands". The title also states that T.D. POORE sold Lot #2 to a J. H. BARNETT, Lot #7 was the lands of DUNLAP, and that his "Pitts Lands" were made for him by C. C. MEYERS on March 16, 1904. I am assuming that this land was in the Tugaloo District as reported on the census records. My questions are: 1) Was the Keowee Courier the newspaper of the area around 1914? I am hoping to find more info on Elias Richard HOLMES parents from maybe an obituary and one on his mother Mary J. HOLMES. 2) Does anyone know where this land would be located by the descriptions above? and 3) Does anyone recognize any of the mentioned names? Thank you so much! Jennifer Gilbert Gibson

    3. Although I strongly suspect our Leather families were related, I don't have any proof that is so. It's possible the Asa Leathers I mentioned earlier is the same as yours, but I only know of his daughter Amanda Emily, and three sons, Harrison S., Andrew W. and David. Hopefully someone else can add some more info. Bill. At 12:59 PM 1/8/1999 -0800, Sheila M. Casper wrote: > >I too have some Leathers in Oconee SC. I spoke with my Grandmother Kathryn (Grubbs/Glenn) the other day and I asked her about Belle and she said that she knew a Mattie Belle Glenn is this Belle Starr possibly? My mother's name is Gloria but Grandma did say her brother Ray Grubbs had a daughter named Patty (not sure of spelling). My Grandmother also mentioned that a book had been written on the Grubbs, but she has never seen it. Do you happen to know anything about this book?
