Hello: I'm on the track of the Ephrim McCullough/McCully family that was in Itawamba County MS in 1860. I think they might have been from Oconee or Pickens County SC. Anyone know anything about this family? Frank
Hello Oconee County Researchers: I am searching for the history of my GRT-GRT-GRT Grandparents: Elender BOLING or BOLLING and Thomas H. McCAY. Elender was born in 1808 (not sure in South Carolina). Thomas was born in 1806. They named one of their sons William Boling McCAY (my GRT-GRT Grandfather). Elender died in 1850, in Pendleton District, Pickens County, SC. Thomas died in 1846, also in Pickens County. Daniel S. McCAY (father of Thomas) lived in Pendleton District. There are several families of McCAY in Oconee area also. I can't seem to get anywhere on Elender! I have children of Elender and Thomas and my William - love to share what I have. Thank you! Nancy :-)
I am requesting some native knowledge. Would someone check around Oconee County to find out where a good Baptist follower living near the Tugaloo River between 1785-1803 would have been been a church member? Kevan Crawford http://pages.prodigy.com/crawford.kevan/
Hi, Could someone do a marriage lookup for a Mr. Wadkins or Watkins marrying a Sarah anytime between 1830-1850. I know this is limited info but is all I have. Am looking for Sarah Wadkins b1815 SC; located on Rabun Co GA 1850 census. Thank you, Melinda
Hi, Could anyone look up the above woman. She probably lived somewhere in the upstate as I have found her in Rabun GA in 1850 born SC 1815. I am assuming WADKINS is her maiden name. Can swap for Rabun GA or early Buncombe or Haywood NC look ups. I know it is a real longshot finding a woman in 1840. She would be 25 years old. Thank you, Melinda

Hi All, While researching an adjoining upstate county census record I came across an entry for someone whose occupation was listed as "Fortune Teller". Since this was one of my family lines it struck me, and even more so since the person was close to a known ancestor. My question: how common would "fortune tellers" be in upstate SC in the mid-to-late 1800s? To me this sounds like something you'd find in a big city, not the rural southeast. If anyone has anything to add on this subject I'd like to hear it. Allen

For those that responded to my query about the GA/SC land grants along the Tugalo River, I committed to posting any additional information I could find. A few days ago I found some good background info in the GA jurisdiction prior to 1787. Some of you may already have this info. However, for those who do not have it: The info was placed on the web 1 Dec 1998 by the GA Dept of Archives and History at the addresses: home page-http://www.sos.state.ga.us/Archives/ grant guide-http://www.sos.state.ga.us/Archives/rs/land.htm details-http://www.sos.state.ga.us/Archives/rs/gblg.htm There are transcribed text examples of a limited number of grant applications and awards which show the type of info contained on some of the grant classifications. However, no mention is made of GA changing county jurisdiction boundaries nor is any mention made of the Treaty of Beaufort when GA formally recognized that the land east of the Tugalo was to be SC jurisdiction. Nevertheless, those administrative changes are part of the governmental record. For those specifically interested in GA grants east of the Tugalo, a good high profile example can be found in the published literature. Any reasonably detailed biography of Ben Cleveland will describe the administrative procedures which non-Georgia residents followed for GA grant application and the subsequent SC regranting actions in land courts. In any case, a thorough reading of all the material at the GA Archives site will provide a solid background foundation for early land research in this region. I'm looking for anyone knowledgeable about the SC land grants of 1790's in old Pendleton Co, particularly those grants made by special land courts concerning land granted by the State of Georgia east of the Tugalo River before the Treaty of Beaufort which I recall was in 1787(?). I am specifically interested in plots of land directly adjacent the Tugalo River and very near the town of Madison. Please contact me privately if you can help me. Sheila, Since I live in Greenville, I did call our library to check. They do have the Keowee Courier on Microfilm starting with May 11. 1846 - mid 1970's. (Some issues may be missing, but this is the date range they have) I was not aware that we had it. I hope this helps you ... I know it does me, now I don't have to drive to Walhalla! Again, thanks to everyone for their help with this! Jennifer Gilbert Gibson <<The last place to check was the Greenville County Library. Someone told me that they also had Courier copies on microfilm. I have not heard back from them yet. Does anyone else know where microfilm or the actual copies of the Keowee Courier might be? Someone else mentioned the SC Archives. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks in advance for your help.>>

The South Caroliniana Library is the place in SC -- not the Archives -- that has microfilm and/or paper copies of almost all South Carolina newspapers. It's in Columbia, too, and has a web site. This info about the Keowee Courier is interesting. I have been trying to get a copy of an article that was in a 1892 issue. I checked with the Oconee Library and they had all issues except for a few and that was one! I checked with the Courier office in Walhalla and they said they did not have any old copies. The last place to check was the Greenville County Library. Someone told me that they also had Courier copies on microfilm. I have not heard back from them yet. Does anyone else know where microfilm or the actual copies of the Keowee Courier might be? Someone else mentioned the SC Archives. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks in advance for your help.
