Jeffords Co., 1st (Martins) SC Mounted Militia, 2) Captain Wheeler G. Smiths Co., 1st (Martins) SC Mounted Militia, 3) Captain Louis A. Whildens Co. B St. James Mounted Riflemen, 4) Captain Joseph G. Harlans Co. SC Cavalry, 5) 4th (1st/2d) Battalion SC Cavalry, and 6) 17th (6th) Battalion SC Cavalry and a spin off unit Captain William F. Percival, Aiken Independent Mounted Infantry. It was raised generally as follows 1) Company A - Orangeburg District by John C. Edwards, 2) Company B - Charleston District in February 1862 by Alfred Birmingham Mulligan and Leonard Chapin 3) Company C - Beech Hill section of St. Paul's Parish, Colleton District by Wheeler G. Smith 4) Company D - Charleston District by Robert Josiah Jeffords 5) Company E - Charleston and Georgetown Districts 6) Company F - Lexington District by Wesley F. Caughman 7) Company G - Charleston District by William L. Disher 8) Company H - Sumter and Clarendon Districts by Captain William Nettles 9) Company I - Barnwell and Orangeburg Districts by James W. Reed 10) Company K - Spartanburg, Union, and York Districts with some men from Newberry and Laurens Districts by Joseph Gist Harlan The site contains assignments and a searchable roster.
