In November of 1786 , a tract along the branch already known as Peters Creek, a southern tributary of the Tyger--- the land that was eventually to become the nucleus of the Hardy family plantation---passed from the hands of Thomas and Elizabeth Gordon into the ownership of Thomas and Phoebe Hardy. the original plot consisted of 204 acres, being part of a larger parcel granted by King George III of England to George Robinson on 13 October 1756, one year after Governor James Glens' treaty with the Cherokee Nation opened this part of the back-country to serious settlement. From 1759 to 1761, however, the Cherokee launched raids upon the valley in which pioneers of both sexes and all ages were killed; and a time of lawlessness then followed the new peace of 1761. It was a most unstable period. Robinson conveyed his land to John Mitchel Sr, whose children John, Jr. and Elizabeth Mitchel Campbell sold it in turn to the Gordons just after Christmas 1785. The Gordons, while only keeping this particular tract for less than a year, were permanent settlers across the Tyger from the Hardys; and one of them eventually married into the family. etc, etc, The information continues on, I only am posting for history sake and interest in Newberry families. I will be glad to do look ups for people for families in Newberry County. SC. I have one book on Newberry County which is really about the Hardy Family and how within their lives all the families in the area are woven. Please email me in private and list surnames, first names and year if possible. The families due spill over into the surrounding Counties but not extensively. I will be out of town this coming week for Mother's Day, so please hold your requests for look ups until the week of May 14th. I will be home that whole week and then gone again for a week. I will do my best to comply with your requests. Melinda
