Barry: I have also noticed this. My husband's grandmother was a Walters and I have researched this family back to Scotland. Both his gggg-grandfather and his gg-grandfather on this branch of his family were named Moses. Charlotte H. Since Shadrack is found first living in Orangeburg County in 1800 and his children later moved to Colleton County, I have focused my search in the SC low country. Recently while looking at early SC census records, I realized a pattern throughout the entire state that I think is repeated too often to be more than pure coincidence. Many early Waters/Walters men were named after unique Bible characters. The 1800-1820 census records list the following households (along with a number of Johns and Thomas' as well as other non-Biblical names): > > 1800 > Chesterfield Joshua Walters > Colleton Jacob Walter > Issac Walter > Jude Walter > Darlington Moses Waters > Elijah Waters > Marlboro Isaac Waters > Orangeburg Zadrack Walters > Williamsburg Jacob Walters > > 1810 > Colleton Isaac Walters > Darlington Moses Walters > Elijah Walters > Matthew Walters > Georgetown Zachariah Waters > Newberry Philemon Waters > Pendleton Job Walters > Williamsburg Jacob Walters > > 1820 > Beaufort Joshal Waters (possibly Joshua?) > Colleton Moses Walters > Darlington Moses Walters > Edgefield Philemon Waters > Georgetown Zacariah Waters > Marion Moses Waters > Orangeburg Shederick Waters > Spartanburg Jeremiah Waters > Moses Waters > Williamsburg Jacob Walters > > I find that the use of Moses so many time very interesting. > > Knowing that travel was limited at that time in history and people didn't typically stray too far from home, I really never thought seriously about looking at other areas of SC until last week when these names jumped out at me. Could all these be members of the same family? I would appreciate any thoughts or information other researchers of this family might have. I am in the process of compiling a more complete list of the census records; what I have so far can be found here: > > http://members.aol.com/btcmfox/waterswebpage.html > > If a family connection is found, I will be happy to share what information I have. > > Barry Fox > Greenville, SC > > ==== SCNEWBER Mailing List ==== > > ============================== > Visit Ancestry.com for a FREE 14-Day Trial and enjoy access to the #1 > Source for Family History Online.
