Hi all, I am new to the group. I thought it is about time for me to throw my surnames out there. I am researching Young, Carmichael, Thompson, and Hunter Families. I have ran across some conflicting informaiton and would love to clear things up by exchanging information with anyone interested. I look forward to hearing from you. Also, I am interested in any information pertaining to Prosperity ARP Church and community. I would love to have some pictures of the Church if anyone have any digital photographs. Looking for information about William Darby (b. abt 1800) married to Priscilla Rutherford. They appear in the Federal Census of Newberry County, SC for 1840 and 1850. >From Ann Mobley, I have information that his parents were Richard Darby (b. 1760, d. before 1830) and Elizabeth Wells (d. abt 1837). Hello to everyone on the list. I am trying to find information on Jacob Barrett, Jr.; son of Jacob Barrett, Sr. and grandson of Arthur Barrett and Lydia Chambers. Jacob Barrett, Jr. lived in Newberry, SC at the time of his death. According to the Minutes of the Newberry County Court for February, 1796, Jacob Barrett, by then deceased, had made provisions for two of his minor children; Arthur, age 7, was put under the care of Henry Hollingsworth to be taught a trade; Jemima, age 2, was put in the care of a John Dawbins. I believe Jacob Barrett, Jr. was also the father of my gggggrandfather, Abner Barrett. I live in Wisconsin and I'm trying to find someone who would be willing to locate the deeds of Jacob Barrett, Jr., his will, or information on the administration of his estate. I've made queries at the Newberry, SC Genconnect site with no luck. I'd be more than willing to cover any associated costs. If anyone on the list has access to records in Newberry, SC, please email me privately at hopeis4u@ecol.net Thanks. Hope
Looking for any info on the above surname in the early 1800's. Possibly the late 1700's also. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You, Susie K. Senn
Gosh, Carol, you have jumped back in with both feet. I am impressed! I am very glad, too, to find Salomi -- she had been a mystery to me, only seen in the manuscript of Mrs. Irwin Smith -- now I know why -- she wasn't b. until after the 1880 census! Now I'll present you with the following, hoping you'll stumble upon it in your masses, this particularly since you're a Price descendant, too. (I posted this this week at SC Genealogy Roots. Sorry for duplication if that is the case.) Tilman (or Tillman) Shealy was bca 1879, probably Lexington. He shows up in the 1880 census with Emanuel & Eve Ann (Jackson) Shealy: 1 Emanuel "Andrew" Shealy, Sr. b: 1822 d: Aft. 1880 <Lexington, SC> .. +Rebecca Price b: 1828 m: Sep 28, 1845 St. Paul's, Hollow Creek, Lexington, SC; Rev. Godfrey Drehr, officiating d: Bef. 1860 <Lexington, SC> Father: Christian Price, Sr. Mother: Sarah _ *2nd Wife of Emanuel "Andrew" Shealy, Sr.: .. +Eve Ann Christena "Tena" Jackson b: ca 1840 GA m: Bef. 1860 I did find yesterday at DAR that Tillman may have be the son of Ella Jane "Janie" Shealy, d/o Emanuel and his first wife Rebecca, with the father of Tilman being Dave Rivers, who later became her husband. 1 Ella Jane "Janie" Shealy b: 1858 <, Lexington, SC> d: ca 1886 <_, Newberry, SC> .. +David Aaron "Dave" Rivers b: Feb 23, 1861 _, Lexington, SC d: Jul 30, 1938 Mollohon Mill, Newberry, Newberry, SC Burial: Union Luth, near Delmar, Newberry, SC, Rev. J. B. Harmon assisted by Rev. Miles Cullum, officiating. Father: James Robert Rivers Mother: Sybil Elizabeth "Sibbie" Fikes ----------------- Here is my note now under Janie: In Lee's George Jacob Price Family History, she is listed as having 5 children with David Rivers: Tillman Shealy Willie Shealy David Horace Rivers Lawrence Rivers Florence Rivers This is the first instance I have seen of either Willie Shealy or David Horace Rivers. Presumably from this, Dave and Janie had 2 children together before marriage. Tilman Shealy is listed in the 1880 Census with the family of Emaunel and Tena Shealy, Janie's father and step-mother, with whom Janie was also living. Although Eve Ann Christena "Tena" (Jackson) Shealy would have been young enough to be Tilman's mother, he may well be a grandchild, as written in Lee's "The George Jacob Price Family History." I have not seen him listed elsewhere as a child in the Shealy books or in the Rivers Family manscript provided by Deborah Harrison and Mrs. Irwin Smith. Lee does not mention, however, 2 children which are included in the Rivers Family Manuscript: James Harris Rivers and Forrest Rivers (twins b. Jul 06, 1884, with the latter dying at birth). The two children that both references agree on are twins Florence and Lawrence Mays Rivers (b. May 06, 1886). ------------ My husband descends from Lawrence. Any assistance on the children of Janie and Dave Rivers would be appreciated. (For the record, Janie died and Dave married her half-sister, Laura Rodella Shealy, and had 8 more children.) Thanks, Bonnie Butler skyvine@alum.wofford.org (permanent email forwarding)
Dear Bonnie, The family bible of the son of James Robert RIVERS, David Aaron RIVERS, which I viewed Sept. 13, 1981, states that David Aaron was born in Lexington, S.C. Feb 21, 1861. At that time, Minnie RIVERS had possession of it. It stated that David A. married first Ella Jean SHEALY. Children of this marriage: TWINS.....James Horris b. 07/06/1884, Lexington, S.C. ..................Emanuel Forris b. 07/06/1884, Lexington, S.C. TWINS....Lawrence Naved b. 05/06/1886, Newberry, S.C. ................Florence May b. 05/06/1886, Newberry, S.C. Married 2nd. October 16, 1888, Laura Rodella SHEALY Children of this marriage: 1) Lola Bell (female) b. 07/05/1889, Lexington, S.C. 2) Cora Lee (female) b. 12/30/1890, Lexington, S.C. 3) Alonzo Evans (male) b. 04/04/1894, Lexington, S.C. 4) Lessie Meeton (female) b. 01/04/1896, Lexington, S.C. 5) David Reedie (male) b. 04/22/1899, Newberry, S.C. (family called him Jake) 6) Henry Hurl (male) b. 10/10/1903, Newberry, S.C. 7) Ella Pearl (female) b. 02/10/1904, Newberry, S.C. 8) Minnie Estell (female) b. 01/21/1907, Newberry, S.C. Minnie Rivers had posession of this bible until her death. The family said another Rivers now has it, but until I get to Newberry, I won't know the details. A newspaper article states: "Mrs. Laura Shealy RIVERS, 92, died late Monday night at the Columbia Hospital. Born and reared in Lexington, she was the daugfhter of the late Andrew and Tena Jackson SHEALY. For the past 59 years, Mrs. Rivers had lived in Newberry. She was the oldest member of Summer Memorial Lutheran Church and was the widow of David Aaron Rivers. Survivors include one son, Lonnie Rivers of Batesburg, one step-son, Lawrence Rivers of Ninety Six; four daughters, Mrs. Lola Reeves and Mrs. Lessie Turner of Newberry, Mrs. Ella Branahm of North Charleston and Miss Minnie Rivers of Newberry, and 28 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Kenneth Hewitt. Internment will be in Union Lutheran Church Cemetery." I have a newspaper article about D.A. (David) Rivers. In part it states"One among the first families to move into the village was the family of Mr. D.A. Rivers and his father, Mr. J.R. Rivers. They lived on the hill in the last row of housed, and in what is Rivers Street, named for the family. Mr. D.A. Rivers is still living at the same place in the same house that he occupied the first day of September, 1902. Mr. Rivers came to(spelled ot) Newberry from Lexington county in 1895, and lived in O'Neal street until he moved to Rivers streen at Mellohon, where he now lives." It does on about his never having worked in the mill, but running an ice business with 3 trucks, and a transfer business. It then states "Mr. Rivers is a grandson of Mr. David Fike, who lived down in the Cedar Grove section of Lexington County, and who was a Lutheran and pioneer settler of that section of the State. Mr. Rivers is a Lutheran and belongs to the Henkelite division of what Mr. Rivers insists is his branch of the church." Nothing more of significance is stated. He is running for some political office. The family bible of My g-grandfather, Sidney Lawson PRICE states that Vina Salome RIVERS b. 04/03/1881, Lexington Co, S.C. and married 11/13/1898 in Newberry, S.C. by Rev. Geo. A? Wright. Father of Vina Salome RIVERS was listed as James Robert RIVERS, b. 03/11/1835, Columbia, S.C. d. 08/25/1912 in Newberry, S.C. Mother of Vina Salome RIVERS listed as Sibby Elizabeth FIKES, b. 03/18/1843 in Lexington Co., S.C. d. 06/18/1916 in Columbia, S.C. Sidney Lawson PRICE b. 10/23/1876 Lexington Co., S.C. d. 12/05/1922 in Gastonia, N.C. Father was John Caldwell Calhoun PRICE b. July, 1853 in Lexington Co., S.C. d. January 9, 1923 in Columbia, S.C. Mother of Sidney, Nancy Christina SNELGROVE, b. 10/17/1853 in Edgefield Co., S.C. d. Nov. 12, 1926 in Chester Co., Great Falls, S.C. My great grandfather, Sidney Lawson PRICE and my great grandmother Vina Salome RIVERS, are buried about 4 blocks from my house. Sidney Lawson PRICE was seriously injured in a machine accident at the Firestone Plant. He was brought home and died the next morning (as told by his daughters). I have the death certificate of Nancy Christina SNELGROVE PRICE. It states her birthday of Oct. 17, 1853 and death as Nov. 12, 1926. Her father is listed as "Snelgrove" who was born in S.C. and her mother's maiden name as "Crout" who was born in S.C. The information was given by my gr.gr. aunt, Oral Lee Price Darby. At my family reunion in Newberry, the year before Ora Lee's death, I talked to her for some time and she gave me a few pictures, along with their identity. There were many more that she could not part with. She died the next year, and I do not know what happened to the pictures she could not part with. I have the death certifIcate of John Caldwell Calhoun PRICE. It does not give a date of birth. Date of death was 01/09/1923. His death was in Columbia in Richland County. Occupation was a carpenter. Father listed as John Price, born in S.C. Mother listed as a "Miss Lounze (or Lounge) born in S.C. Death Certif. information was by C.O. Price of Columbia. I would love to look for obituaries, but I have not gotten around to it. I have generally copied miscellaneous deeds, etc, but have not actually worked them. I have the listing of the PRICE children on the bible, if anyone is interested. I also have locations on a number of gravestones, a picture of the DAVID FIKES homestead along with stones of David and the LYBRANDS, if anyone is interested. Naturally, I have the book on the Cedar Grove Church and the Journal of Rev. Godfrey Dreher (I lost mine, and had to buy another). This is getting too long. Some of you may find it useful, at least solid information. I hope it gets to everyone. I am still lousy at E-Mail. Our ancestor was Abner Barrett, born late 1700s in South Carolina [per daughter's death record]. I believe that his family were Quakers, although I'm not sure about him as the only mention of him in Hinshaw seems to have been as a witness to a marriage. Prior to 1810, he removed to Miami, Ohio where he married Mary Pemberton, daughter of Isaiah Pemberton, a prominent Quaker. Reportedly, the Pemberton family did not approve of the match. Abner and Mary's children were [not in correct birth order]: Esther [Hettie] m: John HARMISON; Arthur; Isaac; Eunice Emma m: Isaac HARMISON; Jemima m: Mr MORRIS; Rosanna m: Mr PERRY; Elizabeth m: Mr JENKINS & Mr PERRY; Hepziliah [Epsy] m: Mr ELKINS; Jacob; James; John; and Samuel I have been searching for Abner's parents and siblings, but so far have not been able to make any connections. I did locate a Richard Barrett who appeared in the "Old 96th" about 1795, along with the Mary Pemberton's family. I would like further information on this Richard. Was he Abner's father? If not, is there a family connection? Can anyone shed light on this Barrett family? I'm new to the list & I'm looking for information on Anthony (Autney) Hall, born about 1781 in VA. He married Jane Boyd, daughter of John Boyd, Sr. Anthony and Jane had 6 known children, some born in Franklin Co, GA and others in Livingston Co, KY. Anthony seemed to have traveled from KY to Newberry Co, SC, GA and back to KY. If anyone knows of this family I would like to correspond with them. I am interested in locating place of burial for Anthony. I will share my info with you. Thank you in advance for any help you can give. Norman Hall

I would appreciate any help that I could get on this brick wall of mine. Thanks, Susan -- Susan C. Below is the family of James Robert Rivers. It is generally said he was born in Lexington SC; however, in one census he did give Richland Co. as his birth place. If anyone has more about the Rivers, Fike(s) or Crout families, I'd be happy to trade data. Below the family data is a collection of Rivers men of the era. I wish I knew more about them. Hello, I am writing to tell you about a brand new genealogy webring linking together sites which include Quaker Ancestors. Non-commercial sites which offer online Quaker research resources will also be included. I'd like to invite you to check out our homepage, visit some of the sites, and consider joining. We have only been "public" for one week yet have received over 800 hits on our homepage, illustrating I believe, the interest level in the ring. I have been searching for the parents and kin of my ancestor Roland Jefferson Shelton, b. 1815 in SC. He was married 27 Mar 1998 in Union Co., SC to Elizabeth Anderson, daughter of Elijah Anderson, probably also of Union Co. Roland and Elizabeth had two sons, Theodore R. and Knight S., before leaving for SC between 1837 and 1840 for Ala. where a third son, Thadeous was born. It seems likely that Roland's father would be listed in the 1820 SC Census. I found the following Sheltons. Name County Males under 10 yrs old Aaron Pend 1 Eqilly(Gilly?) Edge 0 George Green 0 James Laur 0 John Green 2 John Union 3 Joseph Pend 0 Kiziah Pend 0 Samuel Union 0 Samuel Newb 0 Samuel Fairf 2 Thomas Fairf 3 William Fairf 0 Since my Roland was under 10 years old, the list shortens to: Aaron(Pendleton) 1 John(Greenville) 2 John(Union) 3 Samuel(Fairfield) 2 Thomas(Fairfield) 3 It seems likely that Samuel and Thomas of Fairfield Co, are the sons of David Shelton b: 1750 in Albermarle County, Virginia d: 1820 in Fairfield County, South Carolina. It also seems likely that the Samuel and the John listed in Union Co., are the son and the Samuel Shelton b: Unknown in Virginia d: 1826 in Union, South Carolina. This Samuel married Sarah Sims b: 1764 d: November 24, 1822, and was a brother to the above David (the Samuel, Newberry Co., is possibly also a son of this Samuel??). So, the odds are 8 out of 11 that my Roland J. Shelton is a descendant(grandson?) of one of these two brothers, David and Samuel. Any information you could supply that would help me tie my Roland J. Shelton into one of these families would be greatly appreciated!! TIA Tommy Graham TomG@oui.com
I've been gone from the lists for a long time and wanted to ask if anyone here is researching the surname RICHARDSON. In particular, I am searching for Thomas Richardson born 1816. The family has always said Thomas was born in Charleston, but we've never been able to find any traces of him there. Even after hiring 2 professional researchers. One of those old family tales says he may have even changed his name to WATSON (first or last name??) after he got into some kind of trouble in "OLD SUMPTER" and he fled the area..... It's possible he has other male family members named James, John and maybe even Jacob or Francis. Just some clues. Does anyone have a stray Thomas Richardson born 1816 or so? Amy McCroskie
