    2. Brenda Kipper
    3. Hi all, I have a letter to my grandfather, Luther Hamilton Collins, from Jno. W. Earhardt, of the Amity Lodge, No. 87, A.F.M. (Masonic Lodge) dated January 29, 1930. Does anyone on the list have an address or phone number for this lodge or know if they keep records of any sort for their former Masons? Thanks, Brenda ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    3. Ken, Broderbund WFT# 25 has a Lake family tree, but not many dates. There are a couple of Elizabeths there that could be in the right time frame for your Elizabeth, but no husbands are listed. As for Elijah Bowen, I don't know who he is; only that he is an apprentice learning the tailoring trade. He could be a cousin of the Lakes and/or the Clarkes. Let me know if you find out anything more. Susan -- Susan C. 1. [SCNEWBER] Bowen and Lake of Newberry County
    2. Ken Bowen
    3. Hello Everyone, I am looking for any information on James Dulaney BOWEN and Elizabeth Betsey LAKE. James Bowen married Elizabeth Lake prior to 1836 somewhere in South Carolina. I feel very strongly that it was in Newberry County because of the large concentration of Lakes in the 1830 and 1840 Newberry County Census. James was born abt 1811 and Elizabeth was born abt 1812, both in South Carolina. They had five children who were also born in SC. The oldest was William Elisha who was born abt 1836. They moved to Pontotoc County Mississippi between 1848 and 1851. I know this because they had a son born in 1848 in SC and a daughter born in 1851 in MS. The first record I can find of them anywhere is in the 1860 Pontotoc County census. To Susan Johanson: Do you have any information on the Elijah Bowen from the 1850 Anderson County SC census? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Happy Hunting to all and have a good weekend, Ken Bowen Depository http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~kenbowen

    3. A major B_I_N_G_O for Nancie who has helped me alot with both the web sites!! Heres your LARK aka LERCHE http://www.atl.mindspring.com/~wsgriffi/lark.htm According to fellow researchers MR. DAVID "GAIL" COWART (e-mail: cowartd@worldnet.att.net (2 Mar 1998) and Peggy Koch (typeset999@mail.stlnet.com): Karl Lark (Lerche) was the father of my husband's ancestor (Henry Augustus Lark (1818-1879). Henry Augustus Lark was born in Mackensen (Kingdom of Hanover) on June 17, 1818. Henry's mother by name was not known. They had five children of which there are records of two older brothers who came to America before Henry Augustus. The older brothers were William and Charles Lark. The mother was known as widow Lerche-Bartels, and she died in 1894 In Wolfenbuttel, Germany." "In those days Germany was a collection of city-states, not one big country. You can find the town on a German map. It is near Hannover. Machensen was unique because many people from Scotland lived there. Back in the 1700s, the British Lords drove many Scotts off their land so the Lords could grow sheep. Cousin Gail says our ancestors had an advantage when they migrated to South Carolina from Germany. They already spoke English! He doesn't know if the family were Scotts but is curious." "H.A. Lark was Henrich Augustus Christian Lerche in the church records. He left his birthplace in Germany of April 9 1839 and arrived in Greenville in June of 1839. He was named after his god parents." -- Howdy Cousin - http://www.howdycousin.com Pickens County SC USGenWeb - http://www.rootsweb.com/~scpicken/ Newberry County SC USGenWeb - http://www.rootsweb.com/~scnewber/ War Between the States in SC - http://www.rootsweb.com/~scwbts/ Civil War Pensions for SC - http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pensions/civilwar/scindex.htm Parker County Genealogical Society, TX - http://www.rootsweb.com/~txpcgs/

    3. I am interesting in finding any information about the LAKE family of Newberry Co. and Edgefield Co. SC. My ancestor John HUTCHISON's (c1722-1849) sister Jean HUCHISON, born c1782 in Newberry Co. SC, married Joseph LAKE. They later moved to Edgefield Co. SC. I am particularly interested in their oldest son Elias LAKE born c1804. Elias LAKE would have been a cousin of my CLARKEs in Anderson Co. SC. In the 1850 census a Sarah LAKE age 15 was living with my gg grandparents John Baylis CLARKE, Jr and Martha NEVITT CLARKE and their small children in Anderson. 1850 Anderson Co Federal Census Page 189 J. I have just recently made the HUTCHISON connection and discovered the LAKE relationship to the family. Now I would like to know more about Elias LAKE who my ggrandfather and father was probably named after. My father, Robert LAKE CLARK, thought Elias LAKE may have been a minister or missionary. Also I am interested in where Sarah LAKE fits into the LAKE family. It's just a family history mystery I would like solved. If anyone has any information on the LAKES of Newberry and Edgefield Co. 2. I descend from about half of Old Newberry but my interest at the moment is to find information on John and Hannah Palmer. Their son Horatio married Elizabeth Waites. I suspect Hannah was a Wright and a member of a Quaker family from Bush River Monthly Meeting but can find no proof of that. If anyone has any information on Hannah and/or Elizabeth Waites, please pass it along. Thanks DJ

    1. [SCNEWBER] FAIR & GRAHAM
    2. Traci Parsons-Holder
    3. If you are researching the names of FAIR or GRAHAM, please contact me privately. Warm Regards, Traci Parsons-Holder ******* History of the South Carolina Military Academy - by John Peyre Thomas, published 1893 Copy donated by Jane Yates, Director Archives & Museum for The Citadel Transcribed by Traci Parsons-Holder Captain William Fair GRAHAM, the first Superintendent of the Citadel Academy, to who death came in the form of consumption, was born June 15, 1818, in the town of Newberry, SC. He was the eldest son of Major James Fair GRAHAM and Mary, his wife. Captain Graham's ancestors were Scotch-Irish on both sides, whence he no doubt derived his high sense of duty. He received his early training in Newberry. Subsequently he completed his education at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Appointed Superintendent of the Citadel Academy upon the organization of its first Academic Board, February 24, 1843, he died on April 26, 1844, while in the discharge of his trust after a brief but faithful service of fourteen months. Captain GRAHAM is represented as having been a strict disciplinarian but urbane and polite, and "as amiable as a sweetly tempered woman." These are the qualities attributed to him by Messres. John L. BRANCH and John H. SWIFT, the surviving members of the first Graduating Class - that of 1846 - who served under him as cadets. Col. BRANCH under date of October 8, 1892, writes as follows in relation to Captain GRAHAM: _ "I was the last person who saw him alive. Early in the night, as officer of the Guard, I knocked at his room door with a view of giving him the countersign. A deep, hoarse, and almost inaudible voice responded - 'come in.' Upon opening the door, I approached his bedside, remarking, 'here is the countersign, Sir?' He laid his arm over towards me, and I placed the little triangularly folded and sealed paper in his right hand and left the room. It was found the next morning unopened. At what hour during that night he died, no one ever knew. I found his hired man servant seated in a corner on the floor, and I suppose he remained there all night. The next morning he reported to Lieutenant CAPERS: - 'I believe the Captain is dead.' Captain GRAHAM would not allow himself to give trouble or inconvenience to any one , and when the officers of the Institution offered on occasions to sit up with him, he courteously declined their kindness. Hence his being along the last night of his life. The corps of cadet fired volleys by the vault in St. Pauls Churchyard in which his body was placed." Subsequently his mortal remains were laid away in the Newberry Cemetery among his kindred dead, having been escorted from the Citadel to the railway depot but the Corps of Cadets and the Washington Light Infantry. All the testimony goes to show that Captain GRAHAM, who thus died in the service of the Citadel and led the way to the grave, was an accomplished officer and a true man, tender and dutiful. -- Howdy Cousin - http://www.howdycousin.com Pickens County SC USGenWeb - http://www.rootsweb.com/~scpicken/ Newberry County SC USGenWeb - http://www.rootsweb.com/~scnewber/ War Between the States in SC - http://www.rootsweb.com/~scwbts/ Civil War Pensions for SC - http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pensions/civilwar/scindex.htm Parker County Genealogical Society, TX - http://www.rootsweb.com/~txpcgs/

    1. [SCNEWBER] Ancestry.com problems solved? Hope so!
    2. Earlier today I posted the following note: If anyone is considering purchasing a product from Ancestry. com, if you'll email me privately I'll share my experiences with you before you spend the money. I received over 200 (and still climbing) responses. To re-hash briefly: my problem was not w/the database subscription service, but with a product (genealogy program) I had purchased and wanted to return. You need an authorization # to facilitate a return and you only have a set number of days to get credit on your mastercard. I had sent 11 emails (!) from Oct. 22 to Nov. 17 and not ONE was answered. Time was running out for a successful return/credit. I wanted to let you know the latest. This afternoon I was contacted by a rep from Ancestry.com. Interestingly, his call did not come from my emails or phone call, but from his being alerted through an internet sighting of my original posting. (Ahh, the power of the internet!) He was apologetic about (1) the fact I have sent 11 emails and received no response and (2) the fact that a phone call was also ignored. This employee stated he had been recently hired to improve customer relations and seems willing to give it a try. I give him an A+ for attitude and think he has the company's best interest at heart. We can give him a chance to turn it around. (The true test, in my case, will be when I see the credit show up on my mastercard. Then I'll be a believer.) Thank you all for sharing your experiences with me and I hope for those of you who have also had problems with the company, they will be resolved to your satisfaction as mine has been. Happy hunting, Glenna Kinard
