My ggg grandfather, John Wilson was in Newberry Co. in 1820. He was married to Mary (we think), Caldwell. They had one son, Samuel b. 1819, & twin daughters, Sarah & Jane b. 1824. Living all around him were James Wilson, Sr., James Wilson, Jr., Jane Wilson, Sr., Jane Wilson, Jr., Hugh Wilson & Frances Wilson. In 1828 John had moved to Farmington, TN. In 1830 they had a son, William D.J., & in 1834 another son, Thomas J. John died in 1838 & Mary after 1850. The three sons ended up in Navarro Co., TX. I have been unable to assemble John's family in Newberry Co. Does anyone have any infomation on this family...Don Breithaupt, Comfort, TX
Frederick Rikard (Rickard) was listed in the 1830 census for Newberry County NC. I believe he is the same Frederick Rikard who is in Jefferson County Tn in 1850. Does anyone have any info about this Rickard family? Any help would be appreciaed. Barbara Rickard
I am looking the parents of, or any information about MARSHALL CLARKE. He was.born c1836, and was living in the household of my gg-grandfather John Baylis CLARKE, Jr , born c1824and his family in the 1860 Anderson Co. SC census. John Baylis Clarke, Jr. was listed as a merchant tailor and Marshall was listed as a tailor. I feel certain that MARSHALL CLARKE is a relative of my CLARKE family in Anderson, SC. Finding his identity and his relationship to my Anderson SC Clarkes would go a long way toward determining the ancestry of John's father John Baylis CLARKE, Sr., born c1791in SC. I am looking for CLARKES from the mid-atlantic states who were tailors, a CLARKE who may have married a MARSHALL or amy information about a Marshall CLARKE born in the 1836 time frame. Hello out there, My name is Lori and I am an African-American woman living in Stuttgart, Germany. I have just started a genealogical research on the maternal side of the family. My grandmother, Mary Gilliam, was born in Newberry, SC on Nov 29, 1890. Her parents names were Pink and Sally Gilliam (I think). She eventually married Albert Fowler of Williamston,SC. I have heard that we have Cherokee and maybe Geechee in our blood. If anyone has any information on this line, could you please let me know? Also, if someone has access to the 1900 Newberry Census, I understand (thanks, Jim!) that there is a family with a 10 year old girl named Mary. I would like to know the full names of the parents, if anyone might know. Thanks, from over here in cooooooooold Germany!!! Lori
Hi ~~ I'm getting so confused, I posted the snips of our past emails below. Bonnie ~~ I got so excited when I first read your post as we have any number of folks in my line with the middle name of Wesley (Westley). However, they come in after this line. I know, they will all tie in here in SC someday. Back to reality. As MY Taphene Brooks was married in 1821 and born 1792 (via Georgia census), she would be 17 when married. I now would doubt that she was the second wife of anyone. There is NO record of her marriage in Jones Co., GA to William Robert Ritchey so most likely they were married in SC. Some of the problem here is the names. William Robert Ritchey could be any combination of this name and I've got 5 different spellings of Ritchey. So, Taphney (note I keep using a different spelling) could be going by her second name as did ANN TAPHENES LIPSCOMB you referenced below. All the information I have on her is from William Robert Richey's second wife's partition for his War of 1812 pension and she had to give info on the first wife. Data has been furnished that would tie my Richey into the Richey's of Abberville, SC. So it would seem possible that Taphnnie Brooks might be from the Brooks' of Abberville, SC also. With all that said .... does anyone know where I can look up this Brooks family? Can anyone tell me where I might find the 1821 marriage records for Abberville? I would like to thank everyone that has helped me along on this project. My area of expertise is New Brunswick, Canada where my mother was from. I started my father's family some time ago and got the ancestors up to the time they entered Georgia. I know NOTHING about the resources in SC so please excuse my questions. All help welcome and appreciated. Bev SkyVine@aol.com wrote: > > << William Robert Ritchey, born Abt. 1792 in South Carolina; died > 1874 in Jones Co.,GA, USA. Hi, Bev--All of my mother's family were from Newberry, SC. I have only one Brooks in my database of family from Newberry, an unnamed Brooks who was married to Ella Wertz. This is one of the lines I have very little information on. (Her parents were Jonathan Wertz and Nancy Spearman.) So I don't know if this is of any help. My mother was related to the Lipscombs someway but I am not sure of the connection. I can remember visiting a relative who lived in Mashoulaville, MS named Mamie Lipscomb. (My mother was born in Mashoulaville, MS.) However, I am interested in your William Robert Ritchey. I have an Agnes "Nancy" Ritchey/Richey married to Jacob Prewitt. They are some of my husband's 5Xgreat-grandparents and I have been trying to locate further information about them for some time. I only know that Agnes Ritchey/Richey was born about 1769, probably in Virginia. On the small chance that you have any knowledge about her family, please let me know. I would really appreciate it. --Thanks, Charlotte Holder Herridge BevBarney wrote: > Hi ~~ With the new year almost upon us, I decided to jump back from my > Georgia genealogy and follow a Newberry County, SC line. Sorry for the redundancy to the lists, but FYI for you Saluda, Edgefield, Newberry, Greenwood researchers... I just learned from a message that << my mother and I visited Maysons Memorial Cemetary in November of this year (1999) and they now have a sign up with that name. My mother has always known it as Good Hope Baptist, the church is across the street from the cemetary.>> Does this mean that just the part across the street is now MMC, or is the whole church cemetary now MMC? Makes sense, in that it is a Maysons Crossroads, but I'd love clarification on which part or both! Thanks, Bonnie Butler

Amazed with myself for actually having printed and KEPT something that I could actually find!], there is Taphene Lipscomb. She is the 2nd wife of Stanmore Butler Brooks (he m1 Dorothy Watson). Dear Cousins, 60 years ago this week, amidst the dark and uncertain waning days of 1939, King George VI broadcast to the British Empire and the Free World these words, the composition of the hitherto-obscure poet Louise Haskins: I said to the man who stood at the Gate of the Year, `Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.' And he replied, `Go out into the darkness, and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light, and safer than a known way.' The King added: `May that Almighty Hand guide and uphold us all.'.......... That His Hand continue to guide and uphold us, and each of us, is the wish and prayer of your cousin and friend, Cliff Fiveash Listowner
Hi ~~ With the new year almost upon us, I decided to jump back from my Georgia genealogy and follow a Newberry County, SC line. Can anyone help me on my brick wall? Please note that the name Ritchey was spelled Richey/Ritchie/Richie/etc. The name Taphinath was also spelled Taphney/Taffiney/Taphney/etc. This first name was extensively used in the Lipscomb Family of Newberry. Can anyone help me connect or give me a pointer! This is my first experience with South Carolina genealogy. Thank you for any help you can provide. Bev William Robert Ritchey, born Abt. 1792 in South Carolina; died 1874 in Jones Co.,GA, USA. He married (1) Taphinath Brooks January 11, 1821. She was born Abt. 1804 in South Carolina, and died Aft. 1860 in Jones Co., GA, USA. He married (2) Rebecca Burkhalter December 30, 1862 in Jones Co., GA, USA. She was born 1798 in Virginia, USA. Notes for William Robert Ritchey: William R. Ritchey was enumerated on the 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860 and 1870 US Census reports as a resident of Jones Co., GA. He drew in the 1832 Cherokee Land Lottery of GA and drew land lot #70 in the Eight Dist., Third Section, in Cherokee, now Murray Co., GA. At the time of the lottery he was living in Tayler's Dist. of Jones Co. In the 1850 census he is listed at 58, farming and property value of $2,000. Taphiney's age was 46 and seven children were still living at home. He and Taphiney were enumerated in Hammock's Dist, Clinton, Jones Co., GA in 1860. His property was valued at $1500/3600 and he was still a farmer. Taphaney must have died shortly after this census as W. R. Ritchey is married to Rebecca Burkhalter on Dec. 30, 1862 in Jones Co., GA. The 1870 census shows William living in Clinton, Jones Co., GA. He is 79, farmer and his farm valued at 200/1638. Rebecca Ritchey's age is given as 72 and place of birth Virginia. In 1874 William received an exemption under Section 2040 of the Code of GA., whereby his property became exempt from levy and sale. This was copied at the County Courthouse, Gray, GA, Jones County Affairs, 1864 - 1874. William is not on the 1880 census so must have died c 1874. In the Frank M. Bev...here are some deeds I've taken from the Newberry County SC area...I do recall the name Ritchie when going through those records and the name Brooks is there very early on i.e. a Jacob Brooks in 1758.... http://www.rootsquest.com/~coatsfar/docsnewberry.htm This records are Coats specific but I sometimes gather records if I think a Coats may have married into another family line such as the Brooks or Hunt line...or in some cases, the only reference to a Coats is in the deed, will or estate papers of another family... I've also cited the FHC microfilm numbers for where I got the records.... Hope this helps...
