I've been on other lists where this sort of thing starts a major flurry of protesting emails. May I suggest this list not respond to this sort of thing? I hope we will ignore it completely and not let a flame war get off the ground. DJ
Received this today and thought it very interesting to say the least. I knew that Abe Lincoln was put into office by underhanded means but had not perused the reason. Melinda Message: 9 Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2000 23:59:28 EST From: Demastus@aol.com Subject: Truth From: southron@ipa.net (Donna Schwieder) To: billyank64@hotmail.com ********************************* Greetings! Just want to reply to your comments which are out in "e-mail land"..... You believe that the South was a traitor to her real country and misused the Constitution to fit her purpose. I do not know what books you have been reading to give you that idea, but you should really look into reading some primary sources of history written by people who lived then. I could supply you with a list of sources written by Northern people who knew what was really going on at that time. This was a revolution in the sense of the French Revolution. Our Constitutional Republic was overthrown, not by Southerners, but by a faction of true revolutionaries who had gained control in Washington. The North and the South BOTH lost this war. If the truth ever gets out about this war we will really be able to unite as a people to stop our present evil system which is growing ever more tyrannical over the people of this nation---which was set in motion under the corrupt and usurping control of the Lincoln administration. Because the Southern people, and mainly Southern Christians, are actually recovering from all the years of history revisionist lies and finding out the truth about what their ancestors were fighting for, there is the movement all across the Southland today to restore what we all had before 1861...a Constitutional Republic. However, there is a big difference! The Christian Confederate of today wants a restoration of a Constitutional Republic under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. You may not be a Christian so that will sound crazy to you, but that is the way it is. Have you ever read the Confederate Constitution? The Confederates wanted a Constitution "under Almighty God." The US one did not have that phrase included. The Presbyterians in the South urged the Confederate Congress to ADD under the Lord Jesus Christ, but Congress never got to act upon it. This may help you to understand the rising agitation against the South--the "Bible Belt" --then, and now. The War for Southern Independence was, in my opinion, fought more over religion than anything else. If you are at all interested in discussing this aspect, I will be glad to continue with you about it. Slavery was MADE an issue. Just like the agitation and "Confederate flag smokescreen" of today, the trouble -makers try to make something an issue for a specific political agenda. Mr Blair, a friend of Lincoln's said this: " It is absurd to say this is a slaveholder's war. In all the South are only about 250,000 slave holders. These rich men are not too eager for war. It is the Southern people's war. The people want independence and mean to get it if they can." (taken from page 166 FACTS and FALSEHOODS CONCERNING THE WAR ON THE SOUTH by George Edmonds, published 1904) Why did they want independence? There are a number of reasons. In a nutshell, there was real serious strife between North and South before slavery ever became an issue. The New England Confederacy had already wanted to secede earlier. Talk was actually rampant about secession, especially from Northern states, over various issues. The strife between North and South was very real, especially over religious and economic issues. That they stayed united for that long surprised many statesmen. Horace Greeley in his TRIBUNE, September 5th, 1860, wrote: "Whenever a considerable section of our Union is resolved to go out of the Union, we shall resist all coercive measures to keep them in. We hope never to live in a Republic when one section is pinned to another by bayonets. Those who rush on to carnage to defeat the separation demanded by the popular vote of the Southern people would clearly place themselves in the wrong." And I believe the North was wrong to coerce the South. Southern statesmen sent peace messengers to Lincoln and he refused to see them. All the South wanted was her independence. A tyrannical and wicked empire driven by the Lincoln administration sent the bayonet to FORCE the South to remain in the empire. There is a lot more to uncover about this terrible revolution and conquest of the Southern people. If you would like to discuss some more, just write back. I will try to share with you what I have learned. In any case I would urge you to read the speeches by Ohio Congressman, Clement Valandigham, who spoke out against the tyranny and usurpation by the Lincoln administration right in Congress! The CONGRESSIONAL GLOBE records contain these and others. Thanks for listening! For a Free South Under the Lord Jesus Christ, (or the same for the whole USA, D.V.) Oh, sorry, forgot to add the document link in the last email... http://www.rootsquest.com/~coatsfar/docsnewberry.htm There are other buttons in the left margin that will take you to more of the documents for Newberry as well... Oh, Don if you find those will you let us know...I also would like to see those records...my Coates, Coate, Coats family lived on Cannon's Creek and Kings' Creek as well... I'm also posting the exact pages for the Newberry info in the Coats Archive...seems some are having some trouble manuvering it and AOL might be causing some problems, might be their browser... http://www.rootsquest.com/~coatsfar/south.html This is the research page for SC info...the Bush River Church Records are here... and John in reponse to another of your emails as well...I'm only saying that is the Baptist Church Records because in that cemetery listing there is a William Cole listed, if you look in the Baptist Church Records you will see that William Cole and Rachel his wife were members of the Bush River Church...he was a Minister there and his brother, I think John Cole was also a minister and I believe the earliest Minister listed for that church...soooo, William Cole died young 32 or 33, Rachel then marries a Providence Williams also a member of the Bush River Baptist Church...so that's why I think it is the cemetery for the Bush River Baptist Church...however, you could be correct that it is not a complete listing...those records are from the DAR records and I found them on a FHC microfilm.... Another interesting thing about this Cole...we have a William Coats m Rachel Ann Budd, that we cannot find hide nor hair of...but in the SC records the name Cote, Cotes, Coate, Coates and Coats are all used interchangeably...and in some instances the Clerk, Frederick Nance didn't cross his *t* so it comes out Cole....sooooooo and other members of the Coats family belonged to the Bush River Baptist Church i.e. James and Rebekah Coate and then later some of the kids of the Coats in the area... Sooooo, if anyone runs accross any Coate, Coates, Coats info...I'd sure appreciate hearing from you... Also...sorry didn't mean to make this so long...but there are some old deed records the sites are like AAA and BBB...I'm assuming those are records or deeds that were filed in Charleston...and we have about a 10 year period where we can't find records for some of the Coats in Newberry County...we know they were there because we have their land records...but some of those early Coats just seem to have land and then disappear...so if anyone runs across some info on those deed records would love to hear that as well... Just one more thing...really...the SC Council Minutes for about the years of 1762 to 17? are not published or microfilmed...so you will see in those Newberry records some of the Council Minutes for that time period...I had to order them from the SC Archive and they had to search the Council Books to find them...they are the precepts for the land records... Any questions...don't hestitate to ask... Greetings, I have for many years been researching my gr gr grandfather NATHAN DAVIS (1786 - ?) who's son was named LEVI FOWLER DAVIS (1819 - 1888) NATHAN DAVIS was first found by this researcher in LAUDERDALE COUNTY ALABAMA. NATHAN DAVIS was in Lauderdale Co. from about 1821 until about 1842, when he moved to DESOTO COUNTY, MS. Family legend has NATHAN DAVIS coming from South Carolina, but I have never been able to locate the place of his birth nor who his parents were. I now believe he came from NEWBERRY CO., SC, I offer the following information in hopes of finding additional information about NATHAN DAVIS. Nathan was first married to EMILY FOWLER.. EMILY FOWLER was the child of MARTHA ODELL (DUCKETT) FOWLER and LEVI FOWLER, b 6 May, 1769, d 17 Apr., 1819 in Newberry Co., SC MARTHA ODELL (DUCKETT) FOWLER came to Lauderdale County Alabama with her two daughters, EMILY, NANCY, her son ELIJAH and her son-in-law NATHAN. EMILY FOWLER DAVIS died about 1819 at the birth or complications from the birth of her son LEVI FOWLER DAVIS. Emily's mother, MARTHA FOWLER and Nathan's 2nd wife EMILY McALUSTER (McALLISTER) raised LEVI FOWLER DAVIS. LEVI FOWLER DAVIS married NANCY GERMAN (JARMAN, GARMAN) in Monroe County Mississippi in 1841. NANCY GERMAN was the daughter of JOSEPH (JOE) GERMAN and VIRGINIA (JENNY) (MCCANDLESS) GERMAN. MARTHA ODELL (DUCKETT) FOWLER has a headstone in the Wesley Chapel Methodist church cemetery in Lauderdale Co. Alabama, which says: MARTHA O. FOWLER, wife of LEVI FOWLER and gives her birthdate as 6 May 1769 and her death date 11 July 1841. There is no headstone for LEVI FOWLER in this cemetery. If anyone can offer additional information, it would be appreciated. Bob Davis 13117A NW 8th Ave. Vancouver, WA. 98685 (360) 574-1624

Hello! Does anyone have the cemetary book for the Bush River Baptist Church and be willing to try and find something for me? It would be greatly appreciated. I am looking for names for a Smith infant or toddler who was born and died between the dates of 1816 and 1820. I can't give you any other help. Solomon Smith was married to Elizabeth "Betsy" Crow, she was Rev. Charles Crow's daughter and I'm assuming the Smith family belonged to the church. Solomon and Betsy's first two children were named after Rev. Crow and his wife. There is a gap between the second and third child of four years and I'm wondering if there was a child that died who might have been named after Solomon Smith's father. I have been trying to find information on his family for almost a year now and am at my wit's end. Any help would be much appreciated and I thank-you in advance. Mary Hondo108@aol.com

Bob, I am descended from the LISTER family. Have you researched them as well? I have a decend descendancy of them, pasted in a bit far below. My branch went PA>Greenville, SC, tho. Although they probably won't answer your questions, from my file, I do have: Descendants of Permelia Lester (no parentage) 1 Permelia LESTER b: 1801 d: 1852 .+George STAIRLEY b: Sep 07, 1783 m: Oct 14, 1819 d: Jun 1835 Father: Jacob STAIRLEY Mother: Mary Ursala EICHELBERGER ..... 2 Benjamin Franklin STAIRLEY b: Nov 25, 1820 ......... +Elizabeth K. I have been researching my gggg grandfather, John LESTER (1751/2-1825). He married Catherine PLICKENSTALVER in Montgomery Co., Va. and raised his family there. A recent search on the Mormon website turned up information that a James LESTER, who was born around 1730 in Bucks Co., Pa. and died around 1808 in Newberry Co., SC, is the father of John. This same search also shows James was the son of Peter LESTER Jr. and Joyce (last name not known). Peter was also born in Pa. and is shown to have died in SC. Any information on the families of James and Peter would be greatly appreciated. A great deal of work has gone into researching John's ancestors over the years with very little to show for it.
