Does anyone have any information about the Charles Crow who was living in Newberry County, South Carolina in 1790? He is listed as having 2 free white males in the house (including himself) over age 16, 1 free white male under age 16, and 2 free white females. Any help would be appreciated, children's names, etc. Thank-you, Mary Hondo108@aol.com

My name is Pat Rush and I am still looking for info or a connection to JOHN SCOTT / MARY JANE REYNOLDS, who were my G-grandparents. They had two known children, WALTER E. SCOTT, b. Aug. 24, 1885 in Newberry,SC and a daughter, ZITA SCOTT last known address Columbia SC in 1954. Can anyone connect ? Nothing more is known about John and Mary Jane. Any connections out there?
I've posted a couple of scans from the Union County Historical Foundation's Land Grant Maps on The Shells of Pigeon Creek Genealogy Web Site at http://InfoAve.Net/~danshell/surnames.htm. Click on the link to "Stephen Shell's Newberry County Land" or bypass the front page and go directly to http://InfoAve.Net/~danshell/ShellStephenLGM.htm. Notations for grants to Harmon, Van, and Clement Davis are visible on these maps. Dan Shell

Right now I am all tangled up in Harmon Davises (2 or 3), Clement Davis (1), Reason (Rezin) Davis (several), but so far, no firm connection to Nathan. What I really need are the childrens names for the 11 Davis and 3 Fowler families indexed in Newberry Co., SC census in 1790. I also need any Wills written in that time frame as well as any deed records. I have requested the 1800 and the 1810 census records for Newberry from Salt Lake. I suspect that Levi Fowler died in early 1819 in Newberry co., SC and that his daughter died in later 1819 in Lauderdale Co., AL but I have no documents for either event. I am not presently doing a very good job of research as I have a lot of anecdotal information from a lot of people, which I appreciate, but no documented connections. None of the names you mention sound familiar to me. Thanks for your thoughts, L&S, Bob Davis Vancouver, WA

Joye What a generous offer ! I wish I was that close to such historic places. When you feel like it, send me your postal address and I will send you my abstracts (just Davises and Fowlers) of the 1790 census index of SC) There were 11 Davis families there and they all had males 15 years or under in age so any of the 11 could have been Nathan's family. (He would be 4 years old). There were only 3 Fowler families in Newberry Co. and one was "LEVY" who had 2 females in his family, although neither Nancy (1794) or Emily (1800) nor son Elijah (1811) were alive then. I am not a good enough researcher to know what to look for except for the surnames: DAVIS, FOWLER,ODELL or DUCKETT and especially any combination of those names. Levi Fowler died in 1819 and I believe (no documentation) that his wife Martha, his son Elijah his 2 daughters; Emily, and Nancy and his son in law Nathan then left Newberry County and went to the Frontier. All of his children eventuall died in Lauderdale Co., AL If you have a chance to see an 1819 Will book or Deed book if Levi left a will or Martha sold any property to settle Levi's estate, it would be much appreciated Just for the record, the Davises in 1790 in Newberry were; Clement 12200 =(1 male 16+, 2 male 16-, 2 females, 0 free, 0 slaves) Frederik 15300 Harmon 11200 Harmon 11300 John 11600 John 21500 Mary 02301 Reason 21100 Thomas 12103 Wan * 41600 (* I think this might be "Van") William 13300 The Fowlers are: Widow 10200 =(1 male 16+, 0 Males16-, 2 females, 0 free, 0 slaves) Josiah 10330 Levy 10200 I suspect that those families that show lots of children , such as Wan*, are older, larger, families. nuff. If you're talking about the message you sent earlier today, you actually sent it twice, not once. Once it was sent with the subject line "DAVIS, NATHAN >SC>AL>MS", and the other time it was sent with the subject line "DAVIS, NATHAN SC>AL>MS". Notice that the first one has a ">" in front of the SC, and the other one doesn't. That means you had to have sent the message twice. Drew Smith

Greetings, Did NATHAN DAVIS come to LAUDERDALE COUNTY AL from NEWBERRY COUNTY SC? I have for many years been researching my gr gr grandfather NATHAN DAVIS (1786 - ?) who's son was named LEVI FOWLER DAVIS (1819 - 1888) NATHAN DAVIS was first found by this researcher in LAUDERDALE COUNTY ALABAMA. NATHAN DAVIS was in Lauderdale Co. from about 1821 until about 1842, when he moved to DESOTO COUNTY, MS. Family legend has NATHAN DAVIS coming from South Carolina, but I have never been able to locate the place of his birth nor who his parents were. I offer the following information in hopes of finding additional information about NATHAN DAVIS. Nathan was first married to EMILY FOWLER.. EMILY FOWLER was the child of MARTHA ODELL (DUCKETT) FOWLER and LEVI FOWLER, b 6 May, 1769, d 17 Apr., 1819 in Newberry Co., SC MARTHA ODELL (DUCKETT) FOWLER came to Lauderdale County Alabama with her two daughters, EMILY, NANCY, her son ELIJAH and her son-in-law NATHAN. EMILY FOWLER DAVIS died about 1819 at the birth or complications from the birth of her son LEVI FOWLER DAVIS. Emily's mother, MARTHA FOWLER and Nathan's 2nd wife EMILY McALUSTER (McALLISTER) raised LEVI FOWLER DAVIS. LEVI FOWLER DAVIS married NANCY GERMAN (JARMAN, GARMAN) in Monroe County Mississippi in 1841. NANCY GERMAN was the daughter of JOSEPH (JOE) GERMAN and VIRGINIA (JENNY) (MCCANDLESS) GERMAN. MARTHA ODELL (DUCKETT) FOWLER has a headstone in the Wesley Chapel Methodist church cemetery in Lauderdale Co. Alabama, which says: MARTHA O. FOWLER, wife of LEVI FOWLER and gives her birthdate as 6 May 1769 and her death date 11 July 1841. There is no headstone for LEVI FOWLER in this cemetery. If anyone can offer additional information, it would be appreciated. Bob Davis 13117A NW 8th Ave. Vancouver, WA. 98685 (360) 574-1624

Was your grandfather living there at the time of his death, or did he leave there before he died? It might help to know what kinds of information about your grandfather you're looking for. For instance, you might find useful information at the Newberry County Library, or the library at Newberry College (which has microfilm of the Newberry newspapers).
