    3. The Newberry County Court has copies of all these records and a computer index as well...but I'm not sure they will do any looking via mail etc...usually they tell you they don't do genealogy research...at one time many years ago I wrote and requested an index of their Coats probate index and they sent me the computer printout of what they have... The SC Archives also has probate records and also the FHC...I've found the FHC microfilm to be my first resource, if I can't find it there I go to the Archive and then to the Court... Date: Thu, 4 May 2000 19:15:30 EDT Another kind list member has advised me to find probated records on Smith families in Newberry County for the late 1700's. Does anyone know how to go about this? I am at a loss and don't know where to write, call, email or what and what information could I give them in that the only information I have comes from the 1790 census? Here about a month or so ago, my computer crashed, not once, but twice and ended up having to get another one. I managed to restore all my files, but yours. I had all, I thought, backed up, but your file was blank. It went off into LaLa land somewhere. I am still trying to connect the Wilkerson and Wilkinson line. Could I ask you a big favor, would you send you file again so I can import it into my data base. We are related so many ways, I have referred to your files many times. With my newer computer I have plenty of space now, and I am adding to my files daily and backing up daily. Have you had any success in finding anything on your Nathan Davis? >> Jean, WELCOME BACK! I am doing fine ! Using a computer is always a gamble ! Ha! You never want to put into one any information u cant afford to loose. I use AOL and they have a neat (for them) trick in that you cannot print your 'favorite places' so you alwas loose them if you change services. Almost the same thing with addresses, so its always a good idea to copy and email to yourself any favorite places you want 'later' I have found that you can print your address book. AOL tells you that you can carry these forward to upgrades but I lost both addresses and favorite places when upgrading from 3 to 4. Enough about my troubles. In a seperate email I have sent you my davis.ged Please let me know if it transfers ok. I have a question. In my mind I have you located in Sardis, MS.Is that so ? If it is so, you are located 'right in the middle' of many of your ancestors and descendants, and I will be glad to guide you. About Nathan-I have a real good lead on him back to the Newberry County SC area, which is a real breakthru for me. Evidently, Martha O. Fowler, who is buried in the Wesley Chapel cemetery in Lauderdale, AL is Martha Odell Duckett Fowler who is Levi Fowler's widow (and Nathans mother-in-law) from Newberry Co., SC. SC has rather good records so I have my work cut out for me. L&S, Bob Davis Vancouver, WA

    2. The information I have re Reverend Charles Crow differs from what was posted earlier. I have that he moved to Perry County, Alabama and was instrumental in setting up a number of churches there, one being the Ocmulgee Baptist Church. My direct line, Solomon Smith who married Rev. Crow's daughter, Betsy, moved to Perry County in 1834 following his father-in-law. Rev. Crow died June 12, 1845 in Perry County. Charles Crow Sr. passed in 1802. Mary

    3. With regard to Mary's request for information on Charles Crow and family. This family name has arisen often in my own searches of the Newberrry area, especially in the minutes of the Bush River Baptist Church where my own family of John and Rebekah Sterling were members, along with many cousins in the Pitts, and Waldrop families. The Sterlings were my ggggrandparents. Their grandson Hosea, also listed, is my great grandfather. I note the following to save a lot of searching. The Bush River Baptist Church minutes has the following references for Charles Crow and other Crow family. ========================== 1799, Oct 12 Charles Crow and his wife Sarah Crow were received by experience ======================= Charles and Sarah are listed again in 1802, which case may have been a re-organization of the Church. 1803, 1. Charles Crow examined, along with several others, for the gift of preaching. 2. Charles Crow chosen, along with several others to represent the Chrurch at the Association conference. 1805 Oct 2 James Teague, Charles Crow and John Pitts licensed to preach. 1807 Aug 8 James Teague and Charles Crow called to the ministry, and date set for their ordination in this same month. As Charles Crow Sen. is listed as among the dead members in Sept 1802 This was apparently Charles Crow Jr. being spoken of later, both are listed among the male members of the church, along with a third Charles Crow. The latter may be a duplication of names. Charles Crow Jr. is listed as dead on Nov. 16, 1815. An Elizabeth Crow is listed as dead on Nov. 4, 1815. She may have been a sister. Apparently Sarah was the mother. This information is taken from the transcribed .doc file in the Coates site of South Carolina. Hope this information is a help. Best wishes, Doyle Homepage: http://www.dwchambers.com
