    1. [SCNEWBER] JamesMitchell/PollyCraddock/Edmund Harper Mitchell
    2. Barbara Pike
    3. I found an old post on Newberry Queries in 1997 from Mary Mitchell Clarke, who was trying to find information on Edmund Harper Mitchell (b. 1798 in Amelia VA, d.1830-1840). She said that he was the son of Mary Ann (Polly) Craddock and James C. Mitchell. She said that James died in VA in 1802, and Polly went to live with her mother, Ann Elmore Craddock Saxon in Laurens Dist (or Co)., SC. She also said that in 1844, Polly is shown as deceased, and Edmund is shown as her child. She can find Edmund Mitchell in 1830 Newberry Co. Census with 2 boys under the age of 5, but not on the 1840 census. She feels he was married about 1823. She said that there was also a Thomas Mitchell (his brother) on the 1829 Laurens Co. Census. My ancestor, Thomas Elmore Craddock, was the brother to Mary Ann (Polly) Craddock Mitchell. Would love for anyone who could give me any clues as to finding out more about these folks... or how I might contact Mary Mitchell Clarke! 3. I looked up Marmaduke Jackson Chapman and his wife in the Newberry Co Cemetery Book and DID NOT find them listed. However, his father is burried in the Chapman-Summers Cemetary, http://www.fdu.com/family/chapmansummerscem.htm. I would be interested in what you find. Good luck.... -----Original Message----- From: srodali [mailto:srodali@infi.net] Sent: Thursday, August 31, 2000 8:36 PM To: SCNEWBER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SCNEWBER] Cemetery Lookup Hello all, Does anyone have access to a cemetery lookup for Newberry? I am looking for info on Marmaduke Jackson Chapman, son of Samuel and Nancy Hannah. Marmaduke was on the 1830 and 1840 census for Newberry. Since he was 60-70 years old in 1840, it's likely he died sometime between 1840 and 1850. I'm hoping that if I find his grave, I might find out who he married and possibly his children. I'm thinking that his son may be my ggg grandfather. 2. Whitmire, a city on the banks of the Onoree River in the Nintey Six district, Newberry County, South Carolina. Interesting observations from Land Grant Maps, Map Number 3 of the maps published by the Union County Historical Foundation, Union South Carolina. Around Whitmire are gathered many of the ancestors of Nathan Davis. (In alphabetical order to be politically correct (G) In Newberry County: Abner Casey was granted 100 acres in 1770 John Casey was granted 200 acres in 1766 Levi Casey was granted 245 acres in 1786 Lew Casey was granted 316 Acres in 1785 Nathaniel Davis was granted 483 &1/2 acres in1785 (on the north side of the Onoree River, probably in Union County) Joseph Duckett was granted 23 acres in 1790 Benonie Fowler was granted 200 acres in 1756 (Richard's father) Richard Fowler was granted 83 acres in 1784 (Levi's Father) Eli Odell was granted 26 acres in 1800 James Odell & Thomas Duckett were granted 310 acres in 1794 John Odell was granted 500 acres in 1785 (near Odell's Ford) John Odell was granted 50 acres in 1769 John Odell was granted 500 acres in 1788 (probably in Laurens County) That John Odell was Granted over 1000 acres may indicate that he was a General or a very important officer in the South Carolina Continental Line army. Very Interesting, L&S, Bob Davis Vancouver, WA

After John's death, Elizabeth married again to Woolrod Wicker. Peter Quattlebaum was appointed guardian of Abner and James Buzhardt. 2. Robert Lester
    3. I'm re-posting my earlier message concerning James LESTER with the hope that new subscribers may be able to shed some light on this: I have been researching my gggg grandfather, John LESTER (1751/2-1825). He married Catherine PLICKENSTALVER in Montgomery Co., Va. and raised his family there. A recent search on the Mormon website turned up information that a James LESTER, who was born around 1730 in Bucks Co., Pa. and died around 1808 in Newberry Co., SC, is the father of John. This same search also shows James was the son of Peter LESTER Jr. and Joyce (last name not known). Peter was also born in Pa. and is shown to have died in NC. Any information on the families of James and Peter would be greatly appreciated. A great deal of work has gone into researching John's ancestors over the years with very little to show for it. 2. Hi! I've been out of town and off the list for 6 weeks so thought I'd repost my information. I'm looking for the parents and siblings of Solomon Smith born October 22, 1785 (Old 96th District for certain but I've been given the counties of Spartanburg, Abbeville and Newberry as more specific possibilities.). In 1814 in Laurens County Solomon married Elizabeth "Betsy" Crow, she was the daughter of the Reverend Charles Crow and Sarah Harlan. They were or became members of the Upper Duncan's Creek Baptist Church where the Rev. Crow was minister. Solomon and Betsy had the following children: Charles Crow Smith m. Hopper Sarah H. Smith m. 1. [SCNEWBER] Re: Nathan Davis et al
    2. I do not have anything directly on this family, but I have some census records that might help, but not likely. Some Odells and Ducketts lived near the Odells community in the southern tip of Laurens Co. Odells were first there in the 1800 census, and some Ducketts probably in 1790 census and later. Henry Davis and Jane Davis were heads of households in the 1790 census in this general vicinity. Index Book page 74, lines 159 and 70. There is a William Davis on the Union County land grant maps in Laurens Co. I don't know who is in the Newberry Co. part. Richard Lorenz
