I have traced my ancestors to Laurens SC, with the possibility that some were also in Newberry. Am looking for someone that might have more info or direction for me. Edmund CRADDOCK (d. abt 1791) and Ann ELMORE (abt 1756-aft 7/1837) married before 1774 probably in Virginia. She was from Prince Edward Co., VA.. the dau. of Archelaus Elmore and Susanna Morris. Gen. John Archer Elmore was her brother. Edmund MIGHT be the son of William Craddock (b. 1714) and his 2nd wife, Hannah Harper. Edmund and Ann moved to Laurens SC between 1786-1789. Known children of Edmund and Ann Elmore Craddock are: Mary (Polly) Craddock Ann Craddock Thomas Elmore Craddock (b. 1781) John (Jack) Craddock Judith Craddock (8/1/1787) Edmund Craddock, Jr. (bef. 6/25/1789) Archer (Archibald) Craddock (b. 1790) Edmund Craddock, Sr. died around 1791 in Laurens SC. I have not found a cemetery listing for him. After his death, Ann married a James SAXON, of Laurens, SC. They had two children, and they moved to Autauga, AL, where her brother, Gen. John A. Elmore (who was also married to a Saxon) had already located. I have found an old post on-line, but have been unable to reach the poster, that Mary Ann (Polly) Craddock married James C. MITCHELL 3/16/1795 in Amelia Co., VA (I have verified that).. and that James died in 1802, and Polly and her son, Edmund Harper Mitchell, (b. 1798 in Amelia Co., VA), moved to Laurens Co., SC, where her mother Ann (Nancy) Elmore Craddock Saxon lived. I believe that this Edmund Harper Mitchell is found in Newberry Dist. at some point in his life. Thomas Elmore Craddock is my ggg grandfather. He moved to KY (where his uncle Robert Craddock was living in Warren Co), and married Hannah COOK in Warren Co., KY in 1808. Judith Craddock married William CLARK about 1802. Edmund Craddock, Jr. is found in court records in Laurens Co SC as late as 1826. Archer Craddock married in 1818 to Mary Ann SIMPSON (1792-1881). Archer was murdered in 1824 by Samuel WHITWORTH. Samuel was found guilty and was hanged for the murder; his brother, Isaac, was acquitted. Two of Samuel Whitworth's siblings were married to Craddocks... his sister Susan Whitworth was married to a Sidney Craddock, and his sister Elizabeth was married to a John Craddock. We have been unable to find the connection of these Craddock's. Would especially like to find out if the John Craddock was Archer's brother. Mary Ann Simpson Craddock is buried in Laurens in Benthany Presbyterian Cemetery, along with two of her children, Nancy Elmore Craddock, who never married, and William Archer Craddock, who died in the Civil War. If there is anyone out there who recognizes any of these names, or has access to records, etc. that they might be able to glean anymore info for me, or has any tips for other places for me to search, I'd surely appreciate hearing from you! About a month ago I bought the Land Grant Maps Book from the Union Co. Historical Foundation. This map book is a great buy for anyone who has multiple lines in Chester, Fairfield, Newberry, Union, Laurens, Spartenburg, and Greenville Counties. I had never heard about the book until an email genealogy friend of mine said that it was the best genealogy purchase that she has ever made. She was right!! Here is some information about the Land Grant Maps Book (22 in. by 16 in.). There are 24 maps in all that show the original land grants with names. The maps are usually dated in the mid to late 1700s to early 1800s. If your ancestor was born after 1815 or 1820, he was probably to young to have had an original land grant covered in the maps. However, some of the early deeds mention the original holder of the land grant. The maps cover parts (not all) of Union , Fairfield , Newberry, Laurens, Chester, Spartanburg, and Greenville Counties. If you have several families in these areas, it is certainly worth the buy. List of maps covered: Map 1--Neals Shoals- Union/Chester Counties Map 2--Carlisle, Fishdam Ferry, Feasterville-Union/Chester/Fairfield Counties Map 3--Whitmire--Laurens/Newberry Counties Map 4--Duncan's Creek--Laurens/Newberry/Union Counties Map 5--Kinard--Laurens/Newberry Counties Map 6--Brown's Crosswoods--Newberry County Map 7--Blairs-Strother--Newberry/Fairfield County Map 8--Wood's Ferry on Broad River--Union/Chester County Map 9--Sedelia--Union County Map 10-Cross Anchor--Spartanburg/Union Counties Map 11-Goodwin X-Roads--Laurens/Spartanburg/Union Counties Map 12-Clinton--Laurens County Map 13-Watts Mill--Laurens County Map 14-Enoree--Laurens/Spartanburg Counties Map 15-Two Mile Creek--Spartanburg County Map 16-Enoree River--Spartanburg/Laurens Counties Map 17-Gray Court-Owings--Laurens County Map 18-Durbin Creek--Greenville/Laurens Counties Map 19-Horse Pen Creek--Greenville/Spartanburg/Laurens Counties Map 20-Woods Chapel--Spartanburg County Map 21-Roper Mountain--Greenville County Map 22-East Maulden--Greenville County Map 23-Paris Mountain--Greenville County Map 24-Travelers Rest--Greenville County Costs: $40 plus $2 for shipping the first book; $1 for each additional book. Orders should be addressed to: Union County Historical Foundation P. O. Drawer 220 Union, SC 29379 I am not a member of the Union Historical Foundation, but wanted people on the lists to know about this great resource. Susan -- Susan C. I'm looking for relations of my gg-grandmother, Mahala (or Mahalee) Peterson, born in Newberry abt. 1818. I don't know anything about her parents or siblings.. She married Giles Cleland, also of Newberry, and they had at least two children, Nancy Jane and George. They migrated to GA at some point. Nancy Jane married W. John Adarine Jeffers in GA, and migrated first to Arkansas and then to Morgan County, AL. Her brother George also migrated to AL. I believe Mahala and Giles remained in GA, but I'm not sure. I am researching my Thompson line and have hit the brick wall in Newberry, SC. This is what I have so far: (The first two generations I cannot prove the connection to, and they may be totally wrong) 1. Richard Thompson + Susannah Stidman 2. Joseph W. Thompson, M.D., possibly a Colonel, b. 1783. SC married October 27, 1802, in Newberry, SC, + Lydia Randall (Randol), b. 1781 3. Their possible children?: i. Joseph W. Thompson, b. 1812, d. MS, married Pamela Meek. ii. Foster Hockett Thompson, M.D., b. 1818 in SC, died 1850 in MS (my line), married Susan Florida Simmons. iii. John B. Thompson iv. Sarah Harriet Thompson, married Madison Posey v. Elizabeth Thompson, married a Gaits, Gates, or Gattis vi. Dorcas ? To say I am desperate for any leads is an understatement. If you have any suggestions or information, I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thank you. Dorothy O'Neill (Djaneo@aol.com)

Looking for information on Abraham Chapman who is said to be from Penn. He had a son John who is buried in the St John Luthern church.
What are the names you are researching? I only have the Leverett family in Newberry 1791. They were in Anderson Co SC by mid 1800s. The family never moved from Wilson's Creek .... county lines just changed : ) By the mid 1800s some of the children had married into Tucker, Prince and Taylor families. I am interested in a Philip Phagin as he sold Newberry land to Stephen Leverett in 1791. Would like to know if there was a family connection. Or.... if they were from the same area in Virginia. Is this a very active list? (At least comparatively speaking!) Lots of Newberry County, SC folks in my lineage. Hoping to make some connections. Regards.

I am looking for info on Marmaduke Jackson Chapman, son of Samuel and Nancy Hannah. Marmaduke was on the 1830 and 1840 census for Newberry. Since he was 60-70 years old in 1840, it's likely he died sometime between 1840 and 1850. I'm hoping that if I find his grave, I might find out who he married and possibly his children. I'm thinking that his son may be my ggg grandfather.
