SC Death Certificates from 1915 - 1951 can be obtained from the SC Archives and History Center. I'm not sure what their mailing fees are but a copy can be obtained for 50 cents considerably lower than through the Board of Vital Statistics. Hope this helps ! Marlene

Alabama started keeping death records in the early 1900's. Before that the death records were filed in the courthouses. They are sketchy because they were turned in by the doctors and some people died at home without a doctor but in earlier times this was the way it was done in Alabama. -----Original Message----- From: Margie Goodwin <MKingG@webtv.net> To: SCNEWBER-L@rootsweb.com <SCNEWBER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, May 05, 2001 4:00 PM Subject: Re: [SCNEWBERRY] Newberry County Vital Records I've never heard of a County having Death Certificates. Not sure about S.C. but in Alabama you get them from the State Heath Department and theres something called the Death Index you can look through to find their names, the roll and death number. Then you mail for it or go to one of the Archives here that has the death certificates on microfilm. Just thought Id mention it. Thanks, Vicki :-) I encountered a similar situation with my great grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Evans, in Clinch Co., Ga. He died in 1947 and apparently the death certificate was 'lost' between the funeral home and the local courthouse :-) The Probate Judge is a very good friend of mine and the two of us looked at every piece of paper in the records to no avail. Thanks again for the information! Hi Everyone, I've not ordered a death certificate from SC but have a few questions. On another list, several people were talking about death certificates and they said unless you can prove you are a sibling, parent or child of the deceased, it is almost impossible to get any information. Has anyone encountered this type of situation? Most of my research has been in NC and Georgia and getting copies of the death certificates from these two states was very simple; send in your check and they send you a certified copy of the actual certificate. Does anyone know if there is a Death Index available for SC? Many of the larger libraries in Georgia have ones for that state. Would appreciate any imput for future references. Hi Vicki, Please do not take the message personal; as Hostess it is part of my 'duty' to ask that these virus messages not be posted to the list. As a matter of fact, I was hit with the Badtrans virus tonight myself :-) It came in from a list a Yahoogroups (and they do allow attachments to be sent to their mailing lists). Because this email to me was private and from another list member, I didn't hesitate to open it. BAM....it hit me. Two hours later, my system is once again clean. My comments were not meant to be personal or disresepctful. I hope all parties understand. From now on, let's all remember not to send out virus warnings on the list. You can do so privately but please, not to the list itself :-) Regards, Nancy E Parr -----Original Message----- From: VABrannon@aol.com <VABrannon@aol.com> To: SCNEWBER-L@rootsweb.com <SCNEWBER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, May 04, 2001 11:55 PM Subject: Re: [SCNEWBERRY] VIRUS ALERT - FOR REAL >Thanks.....I have been deluged with letters informing me that this was a hoax.
Thanks.....I have been deluged with letters informing me that this was a hoax. I shall be more careful in the future, believe me. Have a wonderful weekend. Best.......Vicki
Hi everyone, Does anybody know if there is a transcribed 1830 Census for Newberry online somewhere? I've searched every resource I can think of without success. Also, on the subject of virus alerts. More and more people are coming online everyday, and just need to learn the ropes with regard to e-mail and list etiquette. Below is a lits of rules I picked up someplace if there are any newbies out there still learning. Jane List Etiquette - Keep posts to the list brief. If you're post doesn't add value, don't send it. (Example: Don't send a "thanks" message through the list. Send something like that directly to the person you're thanking.) - Use common sense when responding to a post. Be aware that you always have two options: responding through the list or to a member personally. The content of your message should determine which of these you choose. - Do not forward virus warnings and jokes to a list unless it's devoted to that topic. - Be courteous to other list members and respect their opinions. If you disagree with them, fine, just do so politely and don't resort to personal insults. - Consult the list archives, if available, before posting a question. This is also a good way to become familiar with a list's acceptable topics, etc. - Do not subscribe to lists with an email address with an autoresponder function. This includes "Out of Office Autoreply" and other features. Doing this creates a large amount of wasted email, which can be a significant burden on a publisher with a large email list. - Spell check and reread your messages before posting. - Do not blatantly promote yourself or otherwise spam the list. Self-promotion should be kept to a brief signature file at the end of your posts. Sig files shouldn't exceed 5-6 lines. - Do not forward copyrighted material to the list unless you have permission to do so. If you do use information not your own, give proper credit. - Do not send HTML, rich text, or stylized email, or messages in "quoted-printable" format. Not all email programs of list members will recognize such formats. Send messages in ASCII.
Hello List-Members, In the future, please do not send virus warnings to the mailing list. These warnings, whether truth or hoax, are considered 'spam' by Rootsweb and will get all of us in alot of trouble. If you feel you must warn others, please do so to their private email address and not to the mailing list.
