I would like information where they came from? I think it might have been Mechlenburg Va. but some others are doing research and cannot put him in this group. I know he died in New berry in 1820, any help would be appreciated. thanks Pam Holmes Pam@snowhill.com

    1. [SCNEWBERRY] James Regan and Catharine Crumley(?) of Newberry
    2. Jerry Crumly
    3. I'm trying to prove a marriage date between James Regan and possibly Catharine nee Crumley which took place in ca1810 in Newberry, SC. Is there any way to locate a record of a marriage in that year in Newberry Co.? Another researcher, several years ago, posted to the LDS records that Catharine Crumley was the wife of James Regan, but when questioned as to her documentation, stated that she hadn't kept very good records and had no idea where it had come from. These are my 3-great grandparents, and I have never been able to prove Catharine's last name. Regards, Jerry Crumly Pensacola

    3. Hello :-) Thank you very much for this information! If they have not been deceased for the '50-year' period, where would the death certificates be housed? In the county in which they died? Each state is different; some are in the local county offices; some are sent directly to the capitol. Just wondering about the rules governing SC. Uncle > > Abraham > > Gordon 1804-1880 married Cornelia Lyles daughter of Wm.Lyles and > > wife Jane > > of Newberry, Co.SC. > I have found in the book " Our Father's Fields" this information. In November of 1786 , a tract along the branch already known as Peters Creek, a southern tributary of the Tyger--- the land that was eventually to become the nucleus of the Hardy family plantation---passed from the hands of Thomas and Elizabeth Gordon into the ownership of Thomas and Phoebe Hardy. the original plot consisted of 204 acres, being part of a larger parcel granted by King George III of England to George Robinson on 13 October 1756, one year after Governor James Glens' treaty with the Cherokee Nation opened this part of the back-country to serious settlement. From 1759 to 1761, however, the Cherokee launched raids upon the valley in which pioneers of both sexes and all ages were killed; and a time of lawlessness then followed the new peace of 1761. It was a most unstable period. Robinson conveyed his land to John Mitchel Sr, whose children John, Jr. and Elizabeth Mitchel Campbell sold it in turn to the Gordons just after Christmas 1785. The Gordons, while only keeping this particular tract for less than a year, were permanent settlers across the Tyger from the Hardys; and one of them eventually married into the family. etc, etc, The information continues on, I only am posting for history sake and interest in Newberry families. I will be glad to do look ups for people for families in Newberry County. SC. I have one book on Newberry County which is really about the Hardy Family and how within their lives all the families in the area are woven. Please email me in private and list surnames, first names and year if possible. The families due spill over into the surrounding Counties but not extensively. I will be out of town this coming week for Mother's Day, so please hold your requests for look ups until the week of May 14th. I will be home that whole week and then gone again for a week. 3. Barry: I have also noticed this. My husband's grandmother was a Walters and I have researched this family back to Scotland. Both his gggg-grandfather and his gg-grandfather on this branch of his family were named Moses. Charlotte H. Herridge (Texas) Barry Fox wrote: > Being a descendent of Shadrack Waters/Walters, I have been researching that family for a few years. Since Shadrack is found first living in Orangeburg County in 1800 and his children later moved to Colleton County, I have focused my search in the SC low country. Recently while looking at early SC census records, I realized a pattern throughout the entire state that I think is repeated too often to be more than pure coincidence. Many early Waters/Walters men were named after unique Bible characters. The 1800-1820 census records list the following households (along with a number of Johns and Thomas' as well as other non-Biblical names): > > 1800 > Chesterfield Joshua Walters > Colleton Jacob Walter > Issac Walter > Jude Walter > Darlington Moses Waters > Elijah Waters > Marlboro Isaac Waters > Orangeburg Zadrack Walters > Williamsburg Jacob Walters > > 1810 > Colleton Isaac Walters > Darlington Moses Walters > Elijah Walters > Matthew Walters > Georgetown Zachariah Waters > Newberry Philemon Waters > Pendleton Job Walters > Williamsburg Jacob Walters > > 1820 > Beaufort Joshal Waters (possibly Joshua?) > Colleton Moses Walters > Darlington Moses Walters > Edgefield Philemon Waters > Georgetown Zacariah Waters > Marion Moses Waters > Orangeburg Shederick Waters > Spartanburg Jeremiah Waters > Moses Waters > Williamsburg Jacob Walters > > I find that the use of Moses so many time very interesting. > > Knowing that travel was limited at that time in history and people didn't typically stray too far from home, I really never thought seriously about looking at other areas of SC until last week when these names jumped out at me. Could all these be members of the same family? I would appreciate any thoughts or information other researchers of this family might have. I am in the process of compiling a more complete list of the census records; what I have so far can be found here: > > http://members.aol.com/btcmfox/waterswebpage.html > > If a family connection is found, I will be happy to share what information I have. > > Barry Fox > Greenville, SC > > ==== SCNEWBER Mailing List ==== > > ============================== > Visit Ancestry.com for a FREE 14-Day Trial and enjoy access to the #1 > Source for Family History Online. 3. Being a descendent of Shadrack Waters/Walters, I have been researching that family for a few years. The 1800-1820 census records list the following households (along with a number of Johns and Thomas' as well as other non-Biblical names): 1800 Chesterfield Joshua Walters Colleton Jacob Walter Issac Walter Jude Walter Darlington Moses Waters Elijah Waters Marlboro Isaac Waters Orangeburg Zadrack Walters Williamsburg Jacob Walters 1810 Colleton Isaac Walters Darlington Moses Walters Elijah Walters Matthew Walters Georgetown Zachariah Waters Newberry Philemon Waters Pendleton Job Walters Williamsburg Jacob Walters 1820 Beaufort Joshal Waters (possibly Joshua?) Colleton Moses Walters Darlington Moses Walters Edgefield Philemon Waters Georgetown Zacariah Waters Marion Moses Waters Orangeburg Shederick Waters Spartanburg Jeremiah Waters Moses Waters Williamsburg Jacob Walters I find that the use of Moses so many time very interesting. Knowing that travel was limited at that time in history and people didn't typically stray too far from home, I really never thought seriously about looking at other areas of SC until last week when these names jumped out at me. Could all these be members of the same family? I would appreciate any thoughts or information other researchers of this family might have. I am in the process of compiling a more complete list of the census records; what I have so far can be found here: http://members.aol.com/btcmfox/waterswebpage.html If a family connection is found, I will be happy to share what information I have.
