Good Morning Everyone, Our List Owner, Cliff Fiveash, called me last night and asked that I post a message to the lists. There has been much discussion on the changes on the message boards and these discussions are fine. Cliff just reminds us all to reply when we have something to say and not 'clog' up the lists with messages just saying 'I agree', etc. He also asked that I tell you of a mailing list specifically for discussing the changes. You can ask questions, discuss the changes, etc. If you are interested in joining that mailing list, simply send a message to: <boards-users-L-request@rootsweb.com> leave the subject line blank and type in the word subscribe in the body. If you have any problems let me know. Cliff says this is a very active list right now, so you might want to consider joining the 'digest' mode...in that case change the L to D in the above address. Regards, Nancy E Parr---Hostess

This may be copied and placed anywhere and is free for all to view including but not limited to web pages, newspapers, mail lists, snail mail, and any form of print distribution. A group of former GenConnect message board administrators, and USGenWeb county coordinators are getting together to offer a new service. This will be an alternative to using the new Rootsweb message board system, and it should be available within a couple of weeks or so. The goal is to create something similar to the old GenConnect message boards, and probably better. This alternative service plans to offer the following features: a. Server space and message boards b. It will be FREE c. It will be fully searchable d. There will be no registration required for posting or reading messages e. The political atmosphere found elsewhere will not be tolerated f. The user will ALWAYS own his/her own posts g. User contributions will be gladly accepted, but not required h. There will be a distinct absence of nonsensical corporate mentality There was a great sense of loss in the genealogical community when RootsWeb was acquired by Ancestry. That sense of loss has been compounded with the changes during the past few days involving RootsWeb, Ancestry, and MyFamily.com, Inc. The recent decision to combine and replace the GenConnect message boards on Rootsweb.com and the FamilyHistory.com message boards into a new message board system has generated a great deal of confusion and dissatisfaction. Concerns with this changeover include, but are not limited to the following: 1. The following copyright notice was placed on the new board system, and displayed any time that a user attempted to print out a posted message: © Copyright 1996-2001, MyFamily.com, Inc. All rights reserved. This material is for personal use only. Republication and redissemination, including posting to news groups, is expressly prohibited without the prior written consent of MyFamily.com, Inc. Members of the RootsWeb Message Board Team subsequently stated that this copyright notice was an error, and it no longer appears on the messages. Copyright concerns still exist since the following notice appears on the bottom of every board page: <A HREF="http://www.myfamilyinc.com/about_us/copyright.htm">Copyright</A> © 1998-2001 MyFamily.com, Inc. and its subsidiaries. All rights reserved. A review of the policies as currently posted for each entity, i.e. RootsWeb, MyFamily.com, and Ancestry indicate that policies can be changed at any time without notice to the user or subscriber. This should be of great concern to every user or subscriber. 2. The conversion was accomplished without adequate notice to board administrators as is evidenced by the hundreds of email messages that have been posted to the <A HREF="mailto:BOARDS-ADMINS-L@rootsweb.com">BOARDS-ADMINS-L@rootsweb.com</A> mailing list over the past few days. 3. It appears that the new message board functions were not fully and adequately tested prior to their deployment. It also appears that there were inadequate instructions and no help files available to assist the board administrators during this critical time. 4. The answers to questions asked by board administrators have been inadequately answered. 5. The upper management personnel at MyFamily.com, Inc. have been unavailable to respond to the board administrators and users during this chaotic situation. 6. In at least one instance, a Rootsweb staff member suggested that if a board administrator was so disheartened by all of this that she give up her boards and setup wherever she would be happy. This is certainly not a very courteous response to a user expressing their concern about some disappointing new policies. If you are interested in participating in this exciting FREE new service for genealogists, please reply via private email to <A HREF="mailto:arockef@home.com">arockef@home.com</A> You will then be notified as soon as the service is online. You may certainly maintain your present boards and sites, as well as having a site on the new service. The choice is yours, and now you DO have a choice. As genealogists, you deserve RESPECT for your efforts to preserve your family history.

It looks to me like this is a work in progress that is frustrating because we all are expecting everything to work wonderful immediately. All things take effort, sometimes more than we realize. Hi all, does anyone have any tips on searching for a female? I cant seem to find out exactly where my ggg'grandfather came from (pretty sure Mech. Va.) or who is folks were, so maybe if I could find his daughter, her ancestors might have the missing puzzle piece. here is her name if anyone has run across her. She was born in 1805 most likely in Newberry maybe Lauren's Co. fathers name was Rowland Andrews, he died in 1820 , when she received her money from the estate she was 21 (in 1826) and I am assuming still not married only mentioned her name Catherine( spelled Katherine too) Andrews . any help would be appreciated, thanks Pam (Andrew's, Davidson's, Freeman's)
Glenna, also, if you put in "Wills" just like that in the new Any Word search on Newberry site, I believe you will come up with Wills also. At least, I did. I wrote the new Rootsweb Msg. Board tech support and asked how I could see all the wills posted to any given county site (as in the old Gen Connect Wills pages), as opposed to a specific will for a specific person. This was the answer: ~~~~ In Advanced Search, choose Message Type, Will, from the drop-down box. Unfortunately, this will include ALL wills posted to ANY board. It is according to which option/pkg you choose when joining Ancestry.com. The $99 dollar pkg comes with census, otherwise, I think you will find it is separate. I haven't found the census they furnish worth adding, currently, what one can read, and nothing seems available for my NC relatives. However, the first year I joined was about the same price and I had access to some census but not the original. I thought I was getting something special, especially since I wanted Newberry County, Dutch Fork area. If any of you have some hints to pass along regarding better use/access I would appreciate being made aware. I am going to message Ancestry.com and explain my problem and then perhaps they will write something in the newsletter or magazine. It could be that I haven't learned to work it properly yet. Very likely. I understand they are working on completing various states. Elizabeth S. Anyone know how to remove oneself from the Message Board Notification reminder thingie? I, in my infinite ignorance, subscribed to several County boards list. The Newberry board seems to be dead right now so I have gotton no notifications from that one; however, the Fayettte Co, GA board sent me over 40 notifications about the same post and it even had me listed as the author ( WHICH IS DEFINATELY UNTRUE ). help, PLEASE.... I sent a question to the tech support folks at the new Rootsweb message boards. I have been unable to figure out how to unearth a poster's email address and I have not been able to find the bios, obits and pensions postings. Here are their answers: ~~~~~ Hi, Any new post will have the email address. Then you would click on the name. Old posts do not. On the advanced search, you use the drop down menu for bios, obits, etc. D. ~~~~~~ I have not checked it out to see if this works and I'm still waiting for a query I posted Friday a.m. to show up in my mail box. Not hide nor hair of it in 24 hours. It must be floating somewhere around there in cyberspace. Gerry, When purchasing a subscription from ancestry.com, you have access to all files including all census. I truly wonder what is behind this "improvement".... For Profit keeps ringing in my ear... -----Original Message----- From: Garry Colgrove [mailto:gcolgrov@pwrtc.com] Sent: Friday, June 22, 2001 11:21 PM To: SCNEWBER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SCNEWBERRY] control? I think Ancestory has gone crazy! In their newsletter they invite you to visit sites only to tell you you can't have access unless you purchase one of their "many" subscriptions. They keep pushing "census" subscriptions that arn't even near completion! What happened to the good old days when you purchased "access" to it all? Prob. hired some new "hotshot"!!!! -----Original Message----- From: Kifle Tesfamariam Tewelde <ktewelde@interbaun.com> To: SCNEWBER-L@rootsweb.com <SCNEWBER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, June 22, 2001 7:19 PM Subject: Re: [SCNEWBERRY] control? >Forgot to say it was Ancestry.com who lost the family sites and all info on >message board during the transistion.
