Associated family sur-names: Sweatt, Steen, Thompson, Grant, Knight I am looking for additional information on a John Mender born between 1855 and 1866. In the 1880 census of Marlboro County, Smithville Township, he was enumerated in the household of William K. Sweatt as a white male, age 14, farm laborer. Relationship to Sweatt recorded as "Other". In the 1900 census of Marlboro County, Brightville Township, Enumeration District 89, sheet 15, the household of John Menders is recorded. He is listed as head of household, White Male, born in March of 1868, age 40, Married, born in S.C. His wife is listed as Pinta Menders, white female, born April 1865, age 35, born in S.C. It is believed that her maiden surname was Steen. She may have also been known as Martha according to later censuses. The children listed in the household were: 1. Bettie Menders 2. Perlie Menders 3. Elisha Menders 4. Redmond Menders 5. Walter Menders. Sometimes after the 1900 census was taken, but prior to the 1910 census, this family changed their family name to "Rascoe" and later to Roscoe. The 1910 census of Marlboro County, Smithville Township, E.D.#89, sheet 4, shows the family as follows: John Roscoe, head, male, white, age 50, married onced for 24 years. Martha Roscoe, wife, female, white, age 48, Md. onced. 10 ch./8 liv. Bettie Roscoe, Dau., female, white, age 23, widowed, 1 child/ 1 living. Perley Roscoe, son, male, white, age 22, single. Redmond Roscoe, son, male, white, age 17, single. Walter Roscoe, son, male, white, age 13, single. Hellie Roscoe, dau., female, white, age 7, single. Lula May Roscoe, G.D., female, white, age 2, single. By the 1920 census two additional children (twins) were added to the family. They were Johnnie Roscoe and Willie Roscoe. It is believe that Lula May Roscoe was an illigitimate child of Bettie (Elizabeth) Roscoe and an unknown father. Bettie was born 21 August 1886 and died 24 Sept 1916. She married William A. Grant in Scotland County N.C. 19 Sept, 1913. Pearlie Roscoe was born 9 July 1888 and died 29 June 1968. His wife was Eula or Ella E. Unk. She was born 13 Dec. 1887 and died 18 Oct. 1930. Elisha Roscoe was born about 1892. Not sure when or where he died. He married Mamie Knight 8 August 1915 in Richmond County N.C. Walter T. Roscoe was born 22 Aug. 1897 and died 16 Oct. 1941. He married Nora Catherine Thompson. Many of the descendants of this family still live in Marlboro County as well as in the Hamlet Area of Richmond County N.C.
