    3. BENNETTSVILLE - Funeral services for Ellen Matheson Hargrave Cromartie, 86, were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at First Presbyterian Church with burial in McCall Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Church, PO Box 627, or the Marlboro Rescue Squad, PO Box 123, Bennettsville, SC 29512. Whitner-Evans Funeral Home was in charge. Mrs. Cromartie died Monday, June 17. Born in Marlboro County, she was a daughter of the late A. J. and Jessie Powers Breeden Matheson. She was a 1936 graduate of Flora McDonald in Red Springs, N.C., and was a retired public school teacher. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Women of the Church, past Sunday school teacher, co-founder of Friends in Fellowship, and former church organist. She was a charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma, member of the Read-A-Book Club, member of the Twins International Association and member and past president of the S.C. Classroom Teachers Association. She was a member of the Bennettsville Lions Club and in 2000 was named Lion of the Year. She was a former member of the Marlboro County School Board. She was married twice, first to the late John Lindsay Hargrave and then to the late Hollis Cromartie. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Diane Hargrave (James T. Sr.) Grant of Bennettsville; sisters, Mrs. Mary Ann (Ross Jr.) Lindsay of Pawleys Island and Mrs. Patricia M (Dwayne) Morrison of Dunwoody, Ga.; grandchildren, Jamie (Barbara) Grant, Keith (Pamela) Grant and Martha (Joe) Hyduke; and four great-grandchildren, Lindsay Hyduke, Leann Grant, Krysten Hyduke, and Kathryn Grant. She is also survived by special friends, Peggy David and Edell Sweeney. She was preceded in death by a brother, A.J. "Sambo" Matheson and sisters, Jessie M. Blackwell and Gwendolyn "Snoodie" Fowler.
