    3. There is one primary tribe in the area now, the Pee Dee, they have been here well before the first european settlers started arriving in the 1730's. The other tribe of note, then, were the Cheraw. The Pee Dee traded in lower Marlboro County with the Winyah, and others, of the Georgetown area. Also some trade with the Lumbee to the north east, in North Carolina. The Pee Dee have also had affiliation with the Catawbas to west. Additional parts of the Pee Dee tribe have been located near the Santee and up the river in North Carolina near Blewitt Falls. One note, although the Cherokee Nation didn't come east of the Catawbas, there was a period around the 1830's when the Census listed ALL native american tribes in South Carolina as Cherokee. If you told the census taker you were of a certain tribe, it was still marked as Cherokee or of another race. The Pee Dee Tribal Council have an office in McColl. The last I've heard, the Pee Dee Chief is Chief David Locklear.
