Jean James Bennettsville -- Jean McLaurin James, 86, died August 14, 2003, in a nursing home in Bennettsville. Mrs. James was born in 1917 in Mullins, the daughter of Tulley and Colin McLaurin and sister of Colin and Kenneth, all now deceased. Mrs. James graduated from Winthrop in 1938 where she was president of her junior and senior classes. She was married in 1940 to Thomas Fraser James Jr. of Spartanburg. During the next 30 years they lived in Summerville, Washington, D.C., St. Charles, La., Virginia Beach and Lutz, Fla., before his death in 1970. She then moved to Bennettsville and became librarian at the Marlboro County Library. She was the widow of Thomas Fraser James Jr. and is survived by her daughter, Margaret Martenet of Newport, Ky., and her brother, Harrison McLaurin of Irmo. There will be a private family graveside service Wednesday at the Grove Park cemetery in Darlington where her husband is buried.
