I first locate him in the 1880 census of Marlboro County, Smithville Township, living and working on the Farm of William K. and Mary Ann Sweatt. The 1900 census of Marlboro County, Brightsville Township finds the household of John Menders as follows: John Menders, w.m. 40 head of household born in S.C. Penta Menders, w.f. 35 wife Bettie Menders, w.f. 12 dau. Perlie Menders, w.m.10 son Elisha Menders, w.m.08 son Redmond Menders, w.m. 06 son Walter Menders, w.m. 02 son The 1910 census of Marlboro County, Smithville Township list the same family but as follows: John Roscoe, w.m. 50 head, married 24 yrs. Martha Roscoe, w.f. 48 wife, married 24 yrs., mother of 10, 8 living. Bettie Roscoe, w.f. 23 dau., widowed, mother of 1, 1 living. Perlie Roscoe, w.m. 22 son, single Redmond Roscoe, w.m. 17 son, single Walter Roscoe, w.m. 13 son, single Hellie Roscoe, w. f. 07 dau. single Lula May Roscoe, w.f. 02 Granddaughter, single. By 1920 two other sons have been added to the family: Johnie and Willie Rascoe ages 10. Lola May is now listed as a daughter rather then a G.D. wich I am sure is a mistake. Several of John's grown children are living in Marlboro County in 1920 including Perlie Roscoe and Elisha Roscoe. Redmond Roscoe has moved to Standly County N.C. Other descendands have moved into the Hamlet, N.C. area as well as Fayetteville, N.C. The other Roscoe living in the Marlboro/Richmond county areas of S.C. and N.C. claims that there is no relationship between their line of the Roscoe family and these Menders turned Roscoe. The Roscoes refer to them as "The Menders Bunch". The story is that John Menders applied for a job at a local mill and said that he was John Roscoe, a son of Washington Roscoe. Washington Roscoe heard about this and confronted the man who admitted that he had lied in order to obtain the job at the mill. He said that he was an illigitimate son of Washington Roscoe's brother, John Roscoe and had been raised by his grandmother Bet Menders. Washington Roscoe apparently believed his story although John Roscoe denied that theis man was his illigitimate son. The descendants of this John Menders continues to this day to go by the name Roscoe. If anyone has any additional information about any of these families I would like to hear from you. James R.
