There are two John Rascoe or Roscoe household listed in the 1870 census of Brightville Township, Bennettsville P.O. as follows: page 331, dwelling # 171, Family # 171 John Rascoe 38 male B* Farm Laborer born S.C. Lucy Rascoe 9 female W at Home born S.C. *note believe listing of this persons race is incorrect but not sure. page 352, dwelling # 242, family # 243 John Rascoe, 34 male Mu* Farm Laborer born S.C. Mollie Rascoe 30 female Mu born S.C. Verona Rascoe 12 female Mu born S.C. Sarah Rascoe 8 female Mu born S.C. Della Rascoe 4 female Mu born S.C. Washington Rascoe 1 male Mu. born S.C. note I believe the listing of the race of this family is incorrect but I could be mistaken. Did any or the white Rascoes or Roscoe of this area own slaves? Some Roscoes of Marlboro, Chesterfield, and Richmond Counties claim to be part Indian which they say accounts for some of them having a dark complexion. I would appreciate any assistance anyone can give me in identifying these two John Rascoe as to who their parents and parental grandparents were. James R.
