Helen, I for one appreciate your obituary posting. They are very useful. I know it take a great deal of your valuable time and effort and I thank you ever so much. In addition to the current obituaries, it would certainly be nice if someone who has access to the old newspapers in the area or microfilm copies or perhaps Funeral Home records could post the obituaries from the past. Please continue posting. James
Lists', I had no idea folks really appreciated the obits. I will go back to the old way of posting them, it was to me the best way, trying to place maiden names with last names in the subject. As you well know list of survivors are many Marion, and surrounding names. The complaint was emailed to me privately. I feel that we can delete or go to the digest list as an alternative. Thank you so much for encouragement. I will begin them again as usual unless the facilitator instructs me different. I forwarded her the email I received. I have learned much from this list and want to thank all of you for your input in genealogy. Happy New Year. Helen Lane Carmichael
Hi Tweety, The Rogers Cemetery of McColl is just on the edge of the town limits. Since it's the closest to both Whiteville and Lumberton, I'll start there. If you're closer to Whiteville, get on Hwy 74 toward Laurinburg; or, if you are closer to Lumberton, take I-95 to Hwy 74, then to Laurinburg. You may know the smaller, secondary roads around this area better, I'm just giving you major four lane highways to keep it simple. Once in Laurinburg, exit on US 15-401, approaching this exit the City of Laurinburg is to your right and South Carolina via McColl is to your left. Go toward McColl, approx. 7 miles away. Go thru McColl, no turns; there's only one stop light in town. Just as you leave the residential area and open fields return, you will see two cemeteries ahead on both sides of the road. On the left,on a small bluff, is Beaverdam Cemetery, site of the Beaverdam Church that was destroyed by Sherman's troops. This site was the last major campsite for Sherman's troops before exiting South Carolina toward Laurinburg. A marker at the site says the Church was burned; actually much of the Church was dismantled, and some of wood taken WAS used as firewood, and some of the lumber was used for various construction. The ramaining bare structure eventually collasped. On the right is your Rogers Cemetery, both of these cemeteries are rather large. To get to Hubbard Cemetery, continue along US 15-401 toward Bennettsville (approx. 7.5 away). About one mile short of Bennettsville, in a very large open field area, you will come to a Landmark Resturant (conviently named is it not?), turn right, immediately before the resturant, onto Beauty Spot road. Continue about 1.5 mile to an industrial area and a blinking red light at Hwy 385. Continue along Beauty Spot, no turns, thru light. A quarter mile ahead you will cross a large lake. once across lake continue about 1.25 miles to a stop sign at SC Hwy 38 N. Turn right toward hamlet. Go about 5 miles to SC Hwy 79 (formerly hwy 383), this intersection will be marked by the first yellow caution light you will see in this direction. Turn left, and go approx. a mile, cemetery is on right in a patch of trees, on a small rise. The cemetery actually faces the old hwy before they paved, and moved, the road behind the cemetery. Look for the old dirt road to take you behind the trees. To get to the Brigman Cemetery (note: there are more than one Rogers, and more than one Hubbard, and several Brigman cemeteries; I'm just describing the ones you mentioned), reverse your course back to Hwy 38 N, turn left toward Hamlet, continue along Hwy 38 N until you see a small block Brightsville Fire Dept. building on your right (approx. 3 miles), the building is situate on a corner of a secondary road, very close to the intersection. Turn right here, go about 1/2 mile, then turn left just before a Church. Go about 3/4 mile, the road will start turning toward the right. The cemetery is on the right, inside of the curve near some houses. To get to Hamlet, reverse course, back to Hwy 38 N, turn right toward Hamlet. The N.C. State line is approx. 5 miles away. Hamlet is just a few miles across State line. Best Regards, Jeff Dudley At 09:08 AM 1/21/02 -0800, you wrote: >I am trying to locate where a couple of cemeteries are. What is the scale of these maps - 1" = ? Do they show sections, township and range lines? What about cemeteries, church, schools, and other structures? Creeks, lakes, and other topographical features? James
One of the best tools when traveling in either North Carolina or South Carolina is the books published by DeLorme on each state. The ones I have used successfully for many years can be purchased in book stores, Wal Marts, Staples and I have also bought them at the Archives. The "SOUTH CAROLINA ATLAS & GAZETTEER" and "THE NORTH CAROLINA ATLAS & GAZETTEER run about $16.00 - $19.95, depending on where you buy them. They show every main road, state road, (ex. SR35), creek, swamp, air strip, crossroad, town, park, etc. Details you may not see on a regular map. The size is about 11" X 15 1/2 " and I keep one near my desk for looking up elusive places for genealogy purposes, as well as one in my car for traveling. They are invaluable when faced with detours, and emergency evacuations from flood waters, etc. When trying to escape Hurricane Floyd's storms a few years ago, we kept running into traffic problems, and I was able to divert us around it by having that map book in the car, and finding alternate routes to use. I have also given them as gifts. The SC Dept. of Transportation also offers maps for sale of each county for about $1.00. You would have to write to them and request the county you want. They have two sizes for Marlboro Co. I ordered both, but found the smaller one easier to use. It is probably close to 20" X 30". The larger one is huge. I am trying to locate where a couple of cemeteries are. I need better directions as I am hoping to visit them next month. I will be in the Whiteville and Lumberton area of NC. I am always keeping an eye on genealogy items on ebay and came across the following item description: HOLY BIBLE WITH DATES OF 1886 No Reserve I am selling this Bible for a lady who acquired this from an estate. This bible belonged to a local black lady. It is in poor shape, but the lady who owns this is hoping by listing it maybe some family will see it and acquire it to keep in their family. If not then she hopes that someone who has a love for bibles will enjoy this one. There are many steel etched type pictures that have the onion skin paper over them. It also has some family history. It lists a Eliza Bogers (Rogers) born in Bennettsville SC in 1868. And a Tamer Rogers born in Brownsville Malboror SC Co. who died in 1889. On the inside main page (like a title page) is the name Butler written. This Bible has both the Contents of the Old and New Testaments. The binding and back cover are missing, the pages are there but loose. There are torn pages, and again I describe this because I want potential bidders to have a true picture of what is being offered. I have taken some pictures to show both the wear on this bi! ble and the wonderful pictures. Please bid with confidence and check my feedback.
