    3. There is one primary tribe in the area now, the Pee Dee, they have been here well before the first european settlers started arriving in the 1730's. The other tribe of note, then, were the Cheraw. The Pee Dee traded in lower Marlboro County with the Winyah, and others, of the Georgetown area. Also some trade with the Lumbee to the north east, in North Carolina. The Pee Dee have also had affiliation with the Catawbas to west. Additional parts of the Pee Dee tribe have been located near the Santee and up the river in North Carolina near Blewitt Falls. One note, although the Cherokee Nation didn't come east of the Catawbas, there was a period around the 1830's when the Census listed ALL native american tribes in South Carolina as Cherokee. If you told the census taker you were of a certain tribe, it was still marked as Cherokee or of another race. The Pee Dee Tribal Council have an office in McColl. The last I've heard, the Pee Dee Chief is Chief David Locklear. 3. Hi. I'm new to the list. My name is Laura Sweat. I'm doing research on my father's side of the family, and looking for anything on the following surnames, Anderson*, Standley, Easterling or Easterwood, Flowers, and Surrency. *Especially the Anderson surname. Also, I'm planning a trip to do research in the area, and wondered if anyone knows where is the best place to go. Any help on directions too, would be appreciated too!! And, if I have any connections on the list, I will be glad to share what I have! Thanks a genie bottle bunch!! Laura

    3. Ron, The Parish's are my line. The wirthy you have listed in the household of Nancy Spears should be Wealthy Parish. She was the daughter of Alfred Parish and Clara Spears Parish. Also the Nancy Parish who married Conner Cottingham was Alfred Parish's sister. Ellen Parham Parish wife of Alfred was the daughter of Harriet Covington and Daniel Parham. and Harriet was the daughter as I am sure you already know Nancy Bridges and William Covington. Here are a couple of Nancy Conner will excerpts The Nancy Conner Mcdaniel was the step daughter mentioned in William Covington's will. Thomas as follows: Mr. Parish remembers a widow Conner who had a daughter, Nancy, that married William Spears, father of Lewis and Harris. After Conner's death the widow married John Breeden. The maiden named of Nancy Spears was Nancy Conner, then, and I am thinking that her father might have been Lewis Conner, who died in 1794, because she named a son as Lewis Spears. Apparently William Spears (the husband of Nancy Conner) had died by 1850, but his sons Lewis and Harris Spears were listed above. The Covington, Spears, Bridges, and Conner families had multiple connections by marriage. The wife, Eleanor (b. 1820), of Lewis Spears was Eleanor Covington, daughter of William Covington and Nancy Bridges. Their daughter, Ellen Spears (b. 1841), would later marry John A. Covington, son of Col. John Covington and Harriet Bridges, with John Covington being the brother of Eleanor (Covington) Spears. John A. Covington was mortally wounded in the last great battle of the Civil War at Petersburg, when none but the bravest of the brave were left with General Lee. Left with children under the age of 6, Ellen (Spears) Covington married Jonathan Woodley, grandson of Jonathan Cottingham and Sarah Bridges, with Jonathan Cottingham being the son of Charles Cottingham and Nancy Ann Conner, whom I believe to be the sister of Lewis Conner, whose daughter Nancy I believe it was who married William Spears (father of Lewis Spears, who married Eleanor Covington). In regard to the Parish name, in his will of 1855, William Covington named a granddaughter as Ellen (Parham) Parish, and Conner Cottingham (brother to Jonathan and son of Charles and Nancy Conner Cottingham) married a Nancy Parish. Therefore, the Mr. Parish who gave the Rev. Thomas some of his information for the Marlboro history was probably related to the various families named above. As can be seen from this sketch, it was not unknown for cousins to marry in those days, sometimes more than once. Best regards, Ron

    3. I have recently found some of my ancestors in Gibson Co., TN. They migrated out there ca. 1830. I keep running across other families that went out there too. I have just found a link that gives an early Sheriff's Tax List of the inhabitants of 1830. Thought some of you who might be having trouble finding an elusive ancestor might want to check this out. My ancestor, John Donaldson and wife, JIncy Fields had dropped out of site and I was so surprised to find them buried in Gibson Co. TN. She was the daughter of William Fields and his wife, Elizabeth Pledger. Jincy's brother, James Fields and his wife, Julia Allison (1795-1872) also traveled out there and became a huge land owner. Another couple, Frances Bright, daughter of Charles Bright and her second husband John Brickhouse, also went to Gibson Co.,TN. I am wondering how many others went with this group. Julia Allison's brother Robert Allison who was in business with James Fields is also listed on the Gibson Co. tax list of 1830 so he must have gone as well. An interesting story from the history books of Gibson County, TN tells of James Fields dissatisfaction with the local churches, and several of his friends accompanied him back to Marlboro to get a copy of the Baptist church's covenant to take back to TN to start a new church. This was probably the Sawmill Baptist church. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tngibson/sheriffList/sherifflist.htm Joanne H. NC harleyclan@coastalnet.com
