Hi, Regarding the questions about townships: Many larger libraries have the book: "Township Atlas of the United States," compiled by Jay Andriot. This books has county maps for, I believe, every state of the Union, showing the townships divisions. This includes both the rectangular public land survey states of the west, as well as the eastern states, with their patchwork arrangement of townships. I find this book to be very valuable, and always consult it when beginning research in a new area. The library here in Chapel Hill has a copy in the reference section. I would be glad to look up a few counties for list members, at least until I get overwhelmed with requests. Dan, Alabama has Townships and Ranges. When township is used in surveying land, a township contains 36 sections or 36 square miles. The term township is also used to mean an electoral and administrative district of the county. The latter was used on the census reports and I believe this was what the original question pretained to. In this case a township can include more then one city, town or community within the county. I have not seen any maps of Marlboro County with such township marked off and named but I am sure there must be such maps. Probably can obtain then at the Courthouse or State Library. James R. Rasco
I thought townships were a characteristic of only the "newer" states - the original 13 plus some others weren't laid out that way (North/South/East/West boundary lines) - only until you get to Mississippi and west. Does anyone have more on this? Dan Dorcatomc@aol.com wrote: > On the township map would it show which Presbyterian Church is nearest Beaver > Dam Creek? On the township map would it show which Presbyterian Church is nearest Beaver Dam Creek? I am interested to know which Pres.Church the McColls and McLaurins would have attended. Thank you, Dorothy
The range and townships are shown on the outer edge of the maps usually.
Victoria, I have a large scale ( 1" = 1-mile) General Transportation map. It shows communities and towns but not Townships and Ranges. What exactly are you looking for? James R. Rasco Harvey, La.
Hi y'all, Does anyone have a Marlboro County map that shows the townships and their boundaries? Thanks, Victoria

Bushy, Abijah Porter was a highly successful planter with properties in old Marion District, in Charleston and in Marlborough District. Because W.W. Sellers in his "History of Marion County" does not devote a section to the PORTER family, I've often wondered if the Porters were more Williamsburg folk. Abijah Porter's Will, dated 1819 and recorded in 1829 In Marion District, is on the Marion County SCGenWeb site. Although I do not see a reference to Robert Porter, you may find it interesting that he names one of his sons James Crawford Porter. Seems to me you have a connection to the Crawfords through the Godbolds? If you haven't already seen it, be sure to take a look at Abijah's wife's Will, Charity Porter, 1846. Not what you asked for, but hope it helps. Cheers, Victoria
Hello all, found a few items today at the FHC. Really would love to hear some feed back on the Bullard line or if there is someone with a web page showing this line would be great. Does anyone have a web page for the Porter/Parker/Potter line? Is Robert Potter related to Abijah Porter? Some do not have their Patent Bk numbers and I apologize for this I thought I had found them all but there were some folks using loud voices making it quite hard to concentrate. I think I am going to purchase this book it appears to have the needed info to locate what county a person may have been in. Hello Dee, Thanks so much for the compliments. Sorry to say I am just starting this research. I am working from a gedcom of Joan Cardon mentioned the locations of the documents which was really great. We went to Marlboro hoping to uncover more on the Rollo line. I tried to pull all documents on any names that were previously mentioned in other documents in hopes they would provide more clues. Possibly I pulled so many I swamped myself. ;>) I have not really had time to digest all that we collected yet due to transcribing it. I am hoping to get caught up here by next week and then actually sit down and go through it. I did collect some Estate papers on several Johnson's but wasn't able to find the Will Books? The clerk was out of the office most the time we were in there. Maybe sometime in the near future I can catch a ride to Charleston and check their Will Books to see if they have anything. Wish I could have been of more help. Are there any "in the know" Johnson's on the list? Thanks Bushy Bushy, Thank you so much for your post. Also your web site is great. In 1978 my husband & I bought property in Marlboro county & I had to sign Dower rights. I believe the law has since changed but dower was still on the books in 1978. I noticed on your website a gift deed from Gilliam Johnson. Do you know the names of any of his children ? I have a Drucilla Johnson married to Lewis Leviner. Their first son is named Isaac Gilliam. I think he may be named for his maternal & paternal grand fathers. Any info on Gilliam Johnson would be helpful. Thanks in advance, Dee Leviner

Edna you're an absolute jewel! Thanks so much for the information and especially on the book. I recently purchased one, "Professional Genealogy" for the exact reason you sited. Unfortunately this book focuses on creating a business out of Genealogy not dissecting the documents, not what the excerpt from the web page lead me to believe. There is nothing more frustrating than going through the effort to collect and transcribe documents from each county your ancestors were living, and not possess the ability to figure out the full extent of the information from those documents. I was very lucky with the first family (Cox of VA) I worked with a cousin who is an absolute genius in genealogy. This time I must figure it out myself once I pass the point of previous researchers. Everyone is so busy I cannot expect anything more. I just located the book on Ancestry.com and sent in my order. It will be so liberating to gain the knowledge required to succeed after the last frustrating three years of learning bits and pieces. Thanks so much to all Bushy There are a lot of really good reference books available to the family researcher, and it often pays to purchase one or two. One really good book is "The Source" edited and Loretto Dennis Szucs and Sandra Hargeaves Luebking, published by Ancestry Incorporated. My copy was published in 1997. On page 202 it states: "In non-community property states, a woman has a dower right or life-estate in one-third of her husband's property. This right must be legally recognized in all transactions, including transfers of land. A man has the right of curtesy -- a life-estate in any property his wife owned when they married or in any she inherits in her own right during the marriage -- providing they have at least one living child who can inherit from them. Otherwise, he has a right to one-third of her propety only." This is only a small portion of the information from "The Source." What I have found it appears nearly every deed my husband took a digital image of has the wife signing over dowery rights. How can that be? Hi all, First thanks Victoria for the kind words they are greatly appreciated. No use in storing documents away it is so much better to share them. Please don't forget my first question on dower rights if anyone has exceptional knowledge in this time frame and area. Thanks Okay, now on to the Johnson question. I keep getting this feeling that Milley ROLLO w/o William could be a JOHNSON. If you visit the following url there is a great write up on the Johnson line by Harold Johnson. http://www.rootsweb.com/~valunenb/f0johnso.htm Also there appears to be a heavy influence in the naming of the Rollo children from the Godbold line. Here is what I have from that angle and with the Johnson name being present it is a possibility but I am also checking now the FLOYD line that may of caused this. Marriage and Death Notices from Columbia, South Carolina Newspapers, > 1838-1860 > Palmetto-State Banner > Issue of March 18, 1851 > page 285 > Marriages & Deaths, Columbia, SC Newspapers, 1838-1860, p.289 > Married, in Marlborough district, S. C., on Thursday the 13th ult., by the > Rev. Thomas Cook, Mr. Abram Godbold Johnson to Miss Anna Thomas, all of > Marlborough. DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS LINE I know there was a well-traveled road between Marlboro and Marion City but I feel that my Rollo's either directly or indirectly connect to the Godbold's. Without knowing the first two son's names under John H. Rollo I am not totally sure about Nice being a Godbold. I am thinking and I mean only thinking that Milley may have been a Johnson. The Johnson's married into the Godbold line. On the Johnson/Johnston angle I found the following by a Sheran Johnson: ? ID: I461 ? Name: Matthew Johnson ? Sex: M ? Death: BEF. 1782 Marriage 1 Judith Johnson Children 1. Archer Johnson b: 27 DEC 1734 in St Peters Parish, New Kent Co, VA 2. Absalom Johnson b: 30 MAY 1737 in New Kent Co, VA 3. James Johnson b: 3 APR 1739 in New Kent Co, VA 4. Milley Johnson b: 7 MAY 1753 in New Kent Co, VA >From what I have so far the only Godbold line that is anywhere near the Rollo's is the Jesse Godbold & Elizabeth Evans line. I found that Gasaway Godbold and his brother Nathan Godbold sons of Jesse & Elizabeth were in Kershaw Co. when my Rollo's were. . The wife of Samuel Annaias Godbold is an Elizabeth Johnson. Is there some connection to the Matthew Johnson line? Is this the same James Johnson/Johnston? Have a great evening Bushy
What a great site, Bushy! I encourage everyone to go have a look as there are some wonderful treasures there, and the site includes many more Marlboro and Marion County surnames than listed in Bushy's query. A few I spotted at a quick glance in the deeds section were QUICK, BULLARD, PORTER. Wow. Y'all have just got to go have a look. It's great!
