My name is James R. Rasco. I reside in Harvey, Louisiana. My ancestors came from North Carolina. I have been researching the family trees of the Rascoe / Roscoe families for several years and have accumulated a lot of data on the Rascoe / Roscoe families which were and have been in the old Cheraw District which included the South Carolina Counties of of Marlboro, Chesterfield and Darlington. Of Primary interest is the pre-1850 Marlboro County families of James Rascoe, John Rascoe, Alexander Rascoe, Rachel Rascoe, Aquilla Rascoe, and Purrington Rascoe. James and John shows up first in the 1790 census. Alexander in the 1800 census, Rachel in the 1830 census and also Purrington. Aquilla sold land in Marlboro County in the late 1820's and removed to Richmond County N.C. In the 1810 census of Chesterfield County there was a household headed by a Delilah Rasco. No other Rascoe or Roscoe families show up in the Chesterfield Census untill 1850 although it is believe that there were Roscoe in Chesterfield County much earlier. Those known to have been in the area were Dan Roscoe, Mindu Roscoe, Oliver Roscoe, William RILEY Roscoe, Joseph Franklin Roscoe, Jane (Roscoe) Minder, Elizabeth Roscoe, Rebecca Roscoe and descendants of these. Some of the descendants of the Chesterfield Roscoe moved to Hartsville in Darlington County where many still live. Some of the Marlboro families moved into Richmond County North Carolina and the name seems to have played out in Marlboro County in the 1900's. I would like to communicate with anyone having an interest or genealogical data on any of these Rascoe / Roscoe families and their descendants. Would be pleased to compare and exchange data. James R. John Brown from New Jersey? This could be the breakthrough I have been seeking for so long. I descend from a Rev. John Brown and wife Sarah Newberry from New Jersey through their daughter Mercy, who married Emanuel Coxe. Are church records extant? Is there a Baptist history of Marlboro Co that I could get my hands on? Did the Rev. own land, and are there civil records? Thank you so much for any help you can provide. Hi Sam, The mother church is Welsh Neck Church. The Welsh Baptist in Pennsylvania sent colonist to the upper Pee Pee River, which was just being colonized in the 1730's, from the Welsh Church in what is now Pencader, Maryland. The initial granted site for them to colonize was near the present community of Pee Dee in present Dillon County (Formerly Marion county, Liberty County, Prince Frederick Parish, Craven County in past years). However, most of the colonist where not happy with this site and requested a new site. This new site became known as Welsh Neck in present Marlboro County (formerly Cheraw District, St. David's Parish, ...Craven County). The original Welsh Neck Church Site and Cemetery is at the location of Col. Kolb's Tomb in Marlboro County. This Church is currently located nearby in Society Hill, across the river. The first church to split from Welsh neck was Catfish, which apparently formed from original colonist who remained at the original site. They split in 1754. The current Church is still in Dillon County, now near Mallory Community, not far from Latta, toward Marlboro County. Cashway Ferry Church next started meeting and split from Welsh Neck in 1756. This site is between Catfish and Welsh Neck on the river, in present Marlboro County (intersection of SC Hwy 34 and Great Pee Dee River). This Church later split in 1788 between Black Creek (River?) church in Darlington County and Muddy Creek Church in Marlboro County. Muddy Creek is now known as Brownsville Baptist Church, renamed after the second pastor at Cashway Ferry, Rev. John Brown (removed from New Jersey). This Church is still in the Brownsville Community of Marlboro County. The next was Beauty Spot (just east of Bennettsville), which later moved to McColl and became First Baptist. The first McColl church building was destroyed (dismantled for firewood (campsite) and lumber) by Sherman's troops. There was also a Church in the present Wallace area. Also, Salem Church formed in 1793, near Blenheim (still there). There is a Richmond TERRELL on your 1800 census. I have been told this is my ancestor. Can anyone suggest where I can go to find land records? If he is my Richmond, he sold out and came to GA by 1820. I'd appreciate hearing from any TERRELLs in your area or anyone who has researched this man. His wife is Patience, maiden name unknown. Thanks, Elaine

The Florence Railroad Company extended its Latta branch line into Clio in 1895. Hello list, I am new, and just found some information on the Marlboro web site that is very exciting. The following persons are listed sequentially in the 1800 U S Census index for Marlborough (Marlboro) County South Carolina Page 53 Hodges Edmond Hagin Mary Hodges George Howard Shadrack Hodges Henry Does any one have access to a copy of the Census who will provide detained information on the above HODGES? It is possible the information will help resolve a 30+ year brick wall.
