Bonnie, just received this message and sure enough I found the teddy bear. I received two letters from this source telling me about this virus Quick-L-@rootsweb.com "A virus has been passed on to my computer and my address book was affected. Since you are in my address book there is a good chance you will find it in your computer too. I followed the directions below and eradicated the virus easily. The virus is called jdbgmgr.exe, it is not detected by Norton orMcAfee anti-virus. The virus sits quietly for 14 days before damaging the system. It is sent automatically by emails or messenger whether ornot you sent emails to your contacts. Here is how to check for the virus and get rid of it. 1. Go to Start, Find or Search option 2. In the file/folder option type the name jdbgmgr.exe 3. Be sure to search your C: drive and all subfolders and any other drives you have. 4. Click Find Now/Search 5. The virus has a teddy bear icon in front of it. DO NOT OPEN IT! 6. Go to Edit (on the menu bar) choode "select all" to hightlight the file without opening it 7. Now go to File (on the menu bar) and select "Delete". It will then go to the recycle bin. 8. Go to the recycle bin and empty it and delete the file there as well. IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS, YOU MUST CONTACT ALL THE PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK, SO THEY CAN ERADICATE IT IN THEIR OWN ADDRESS BOOK. To do this: 1. Open a new email message 2. I first locate him in the 1880 census of Marlboro County, Smithville Township, living and working on the Farm of William K. and Mary Ann Sweatt. The 1900 census of Marlboro County, Brightsville Township finds the household of John Menders as follows: John Menders, w.m. 40 head of household born in S.C. The other Roscoe living in the Marlboro/Richmond county areas of S.C. and N.C. claims that there is no relationship between their line of the Roscoe family and these Menders turned Roscoe. The Roscoes refer to them as "The Menders Bunch". The story is that John Menders applied for a job at a local mill and said that he was John Roscoe, a son of Washington Roscoe. Washington Roscoe heard about this and confronted the man who admitted that he had lied in order to obtain the job at the mill. He said that he was an illigitimate son of Washington Roscoe's brother, John Roscoe and had been raised by his grandmother Bet Menders. Washington Roscoe apparently believed his story although John Roscoe denied that theis man was his illigitimate son. Can anyone help me? I am looking for vital information concerning Alexander H. Rascoe. Especially his date of death and place of burial. This is what I know or think I know about Alexander H. Rascoe. He was born about 1837 in Marlboro County South Carolina. It is believed that his father was Purrington Rascoe. Alexander H. Rascoe served in the S.C. 21st Infantry, Company "F" CSA during the War Between the States. He was married at least three times. His first wife was listed in the 1870 census as Parky. It is believed that her maiden sur-name might have been McCall or McCauel. His second wife was Elizabeth Carlye. She died 16 January 1884. His third wife was Sarah A. Gibson. They were married 6 December 1885. Alexander H. Rascoe was still living in the Bennettsville area when the 1910 census was taken. From the combined data from the 1870, 1880, 1900, and 1910 censuses it appears that his children were: 1. John Rascoe born abt. 1865.Md. Martha (unk.) 2. Mary C. Rascoe born abt 1867-68. 3. Alice Rascoe born about 1869. 4. Colan Rascoe born abt.1869. (was living in the home of an uncle named W.K. Kenney in Charleston, S.C. in 1900). 5. Daniel Rascoe born abt 1869-70. 6. Annie A. Rascoe born abt. 1870. 7. Ollie M. Rascoe born abt 1891, died abt. July 1904. 8. LeRoy Rascoe born 2 Dec. 1892. Died in February 1970 at Bennettville. 9. Daniel Rascoe (2nd) born 12 Sept. 1894. Died January 1967 ar Cheraw. 10. Step-daughter, Elvia Rascoe, born abt. 1906. 11. Step-son, Alexander Rascoe, born abt. 1908. I am also interested in knowing the exact date of Alexander H. Rascoe's birth as well as the birth and death dates of his father, Purrington Rascoe (abt. 1802-5 to abt 1861) and where (which cemetery) he is buried in. Any help would be appreciated. James R. Rasco
There was a 14 year old farm laborer living on the farm of William K. Sweatt when the 1880 census was taken of Smithville township, Marlboro County South Carolina. His name was JOHN MENDER. Can anyone tell me anything more on this John Minder? Did he remain in Marlboro County? Was he married in Marlboro County? If so, to whom? Did he have children and if so what were their names? Any help appreciated. James R. Rasco

Can anyone tell me where in Marlboro County is a community or township named Smithville? It is mentioned in the 1910 census but I can't locate anysuch place on my Department of Transportation Map of Marlboro County. James R. Rasco
Tammy, Thanks. I already have all of the Marlboro, Chesterfield, and Darlington County census from 1790 through 1920 that mentions families with the sur-name Rasco, Rascoe, Rascow, Ruscoe, Ruscow, Rosco, Roscoe. They are all related. These are only variations of the spelling of the same sur-name. I am not sure where they lived prior to their arrival in the Cheraw District prior to the 1790 census but I believe they may have been in Wayne County N.C. in 1786 and probably in Bertie, Hertford, Chowan, Tyrell, or Hyde County N.C. prior to that. The Rascoe families in Bertie County in the mid to late 1700's were slave owners and had large plantations. Most of the descendant of the Rascoe slaves took the family sur-name after the War Between the States. Many of the Rascoe slaves were mulato and some may have even been Tuscarora. The Rasco (Rasgo) families that showed up in The Marlboro Area did not appear to have owned much property and appears to have been rather poor. It is doubtful that any of them owned slaves. To the contrary they may have actually been "free persons of Color" Those that descend from Alexander Rasco, including Purnington Rascoe were always listed as White. Descendants of John seem to have been listed as Mulato or Black but this may have just been due to their dark complexion. Many descendant of the Rascoe/Roscoe families which still lives in Chesterfield, Darlington, Marlboro, Richmond and surrounding areas as well as those from that area but who now lives elsewhere have a tradition that they are part Indian. Normally they claim to be Cherokee, Pee Dee, Cheraw, Coatian, or Lumbee. They appear to be a people simular to the Mulugeon in North Eastern Tennessee and West Virginia. James R. Rasco

When reading census records prior to 1880 it is important to remember the removal of Indian tribes from earlier in the century. Many people of mixed ancestry were listed as black or mulatto when in fact there may have been more Cherokee or Seminole in their bloodline. Most of this is not provable but it has been noted that in some counties where large families were enumerated prior to the removal, afterwards had much smaller families but a larger number of black or mulatto servants. Of course this is not true in every case, and I am not trying to make that point. But it is best to approach these listings with an open mind and keep looking for corroborating evidence. thanks, Tammy Cox
There are two John Rascoe or Roscoe household listed in the 1870 census of Brightville Township, Bennettsville P.O. as follows: page 331, dwelling # 171, Family # 171 John Rascoe 38 male B* Farm Laborer born S.C. Martha Rascoe 34 female W Keeping house born S.C. J. S. Rascoe 13 male W born S.C. Lucy Rascoe 9 female W at Home born S.C. *note believe listing of this persons race is incorrect but not sure. page 352, dwelling # 242, family # 243 John Rascoe, 34 male Mu* Farm Laborer born S.C. Mollie Rascoe 30 female Mu born S.C. Verona Rascoe 12 female Mu born S.C. Sarah Rascoe 8 female Mu born S.C. Della Rascoe 4 female Mu born S.C. Washington Rascoe 1 male Mu. born S.C. note I believe the listing of the race of this family is incorrect but I could be mistaken. Did any or the white Rascoes or Roscoe of this area own slaves? Some Roscoes of Marlboro, Chesterfield, and Richmond Counties claim to be part Indian which they say accounts for some of them having a dark complexion. I would appreciate any assistance anyone can give me in identifying these two John Rascoe as to who their parents and parental grandparents were. James R. I am trying to identify the parents of this John Roscoe whose household was enumerated in the 1910 census of Smithville Township, of, Marlboro County. ED# 89, sheet 4, as follows: John Roscoe head male white age 50 md. 1 24 yrs. b. S.C. Farmer Martha Roscoe wife female white age 48 md. 1 24 yrs. 10ch, 8liv. born S.C. Bettie Roscoe dau. female white age 23 wid. 1 ch, 1liv. born S.C. Perley Roscoe son male white age 22 single born S.C. Redmond Roscoe son male white age 17 single born S.C. Walter Roscoe son male white age 13 single born S.C. Hellie Roscoe dau female white age 7 single born S.C. Lula May Roscoe G.D. female white age 2 single born S.C. In the 1920 census this family's surname is spelled Rascoe. The only child that was listed in the 1920 census that was listed in the 1910 census was Lula or Lola May but she is now shown as a daughter of John rather then his granddaughter. I believe this is a mistake. I believe that Lola May is the daughter of the Bettie Roscoe that was in John's household in 1910. Two other sons of John's are listed in the 1920 census that were not in the 1910 censu s. These are Johnie age 10 and Willie age 10. In 1920 Redmond Rosco, son of John was enumerated in Stanley County N.C. A Walter T. Roscoe who is probably the son of John is buried in Marlboro County, he was born August 22, 1897 and died October 16, 1941. Perley Rasco, son of John, was enumerated in Marlboro County in 1920. The census shows his wife was named Eula and he had two daughters; Francis age 10 and Margaret age 4/12. Eula died October 18, 1930 age 42 in Marlboro County. Any help in identiying the parents and parental grandparents of this John Roscoe and the maiden sur-name of his wife, Martha, would be appreciated. James R.
