Hello all of you quiet Marlboro Co., SC researchers. While you are checking your charts, how about checking for any stray Medlin family members you might have come across or connected with along the way. I am not choosy. Just trying to see who was in Marlboro, especially in the early 1800 time frame. There were several MEDLIN men, and I am not sure how they all connect. There were also several "Mary" Medlins, and most , if not all, married into the Medlin family, so had different surnames. If you have a location, a year, a cemetery, or some potential church affliliation to go along with the person, that would be a bonus. Thanks. My ancestor, Mary Ann Medlin, born 1816, probably had several siblings in the area. Joanne Harley NC harleyclan@coastalnet.com

And William Terrell died, then Elizabeth Pledger married William Fields. They had a son, James, who married Julia Allison. They also had a daughter, Jincy. The name Terrell was carried on by James Fields and Julia Allison, who named their oldest son, John Terrell Fields. John and his parents moved to Dyer County, TN. Billie Shaw Powell greatgranddaughter of John Terrell Fields and Lucy Susan Jennings
ELAINE, The first Terrell I have on my chart is a WILLIAM TERRELL, lived and died 1782 in the Marlboro Co.,SC area. He witnessed a Will in St. David's Parish in 1772. (from the Min. of St. David's Parish) In "Anson Co.,NC Abstracts of Early records", by McBee, page 41, 12 July 1766, PHILEMON TERRILL/TERRELL of SC to Vann Swearington of Anson, for 3 £, tract in Anson on Cheek's Creek, 100 acres granted to John Cannon. ( For more info on this deed, it is listed in Deed BK H#1. Anson Co.,NC was divided in 1779. Present Cheek's Creek rises in se Montgomery Co. , flows sw into Richmond Co. where it enters Little River. ) Same book as above, page 45, Dec. 1778/ JERIMIAH TERRELL and Louisa his wife, and WILLIAM TERRELL , to James Auld, all of Anson, ..sellling tract of land .where JERIMIAH TERRELL now lives...west of Pee Dee...£150 for 150 acres..(sounds like he is moving) I have an old book called "ANSON CO.,NC DEED ABSTRACTS VOLUME 1: 1749-1757". page 24 /date: 2 Dec. 1751, a deed recorded that was part of a grant of 400 A to JAMES TERR(ERS), 7 APR 1749, on a branch of Little River. (Whoever copied this down could not tell what the certain spelling was, and it could be either Terry or Terrall. A JOSHUA TERREL and a WILLIAM TERREL are also listed in "Min. of the St. David's Society 1777-1835" This was organized to provide schooling for the children of the planters along the Pee Dee River. It was first organized and started in the original Welsh Neck Baptist Church, and a new building was later built across the river on a higher piece of land because of the flooding the church was experiencing. The church itself eventually moved over to the same area which put it into Darlington Co., SC Back in those days, it was all just the Cheraw Dist. "My" WM. TERRELL married into the Pledger family, as the second husband of my ancestor, Elizabeth Pledger. They attended the Welsh Neck Baptist Church there (in Marlboro Co.,SC (1775-1779), and had one son, named John, who then had ten daughters with his wife, Ann Allison. The marriage record of WILLIAM TERRELL & ELIZABETH PLEDGER was in Richmond Co.,NC. The folks in this area sometimes had farms in both Richmond and Marlboro counties. They went back and forth all the time. Someone shared this with me a while back which I have in my notes:. James Terrill, Planter from St. Margaret's Parish, Caroline Co., VA sp-Margaret issue: 1. William Terrill 2. Mary Terrill 3.James Terrill 4.Betty Terrill 5. Patty Terrill 6.John Terrill 7.Dudley 8. Jonathan 9. Neffe Good luck with your Terrell genealogy. Joanne H. I am trying once again to see if I have any 'cousins' out there. My ancestors Richmond and his brother Philemon lived and owned land and served in the Rev. War in Bladen/ Robeson County area of NC before moving to Liberty County Georgia after 1810. I have heard their father was James, but can find no James in NC or SC records for that time. I know there is a Richmond TERRELL on your 1800 census, but I don't know if that one is mine.Since you are just across the line from Bladen, does anyone know about the Marlboro TERRELLs. I'd be happy to share what I have on this family. Elaine
Is anyone available to do a look up for me in Dillion SC marriage records for 1941-1943? Looking for marriage of Cecil Frank White and Fannie Elva Gresham. Think marriage was in 1942. Thanks.
See my previous posting of March 20, 2003. Eula Roscoe, wife of Pearlie Roscoe was buried in the Wallace Cemetery in Marlboro County. This cemetery is also known as the Bright or Stubbs Cemetery. Elisha Roscoe and Mamie Knight had the following children: 1. Julian Roscoe born 9 Feb. 1915. Died 20 Feb. 1998. 2. Brady Roscoe born 22 Oct. 1918. Died in Nov. 1973. 3. Lee Roscoe born 1 April 1919. Died 5 Sept. 1988. 4. Foster Roscoe, born 25 March 1924. Died 12 Dec. 2001. 5. Oscar Roscoe, born 20 Dec. 1920. Died 31 July 1984. 6. Richard Hillard Roscoe, Still living. 7. Mary Roscoe Brown, died 2 Jan. 2003. 8. Martha Roscoe Cravate, still living. Nora Catherine Thompson Roscoe, wife of Walter T. Roscoe, was born about 1892. She died 4 Oct. 1966. Both she and Walter are buried in in the Steen Cemetery about a mile south of the N.C. border on a dirt road between highways 38 and 257. William and Elizabeth (Roscoe) Grant are also buried in this steen cemetery in Marlboro County. It is believed but unproven that John Roscoe and his wife Martha Pinta Roscoe are also buried in this cemetery but with no headstones. Foster Roscoe, son of Elisha Roscoe, was born 25 March 1924 in Richmond County N.C. and died 12 Dec. 2001 in Charlotte, N.C. He had the following children: 1. Linda Roscoe Vibbert 2. Kathy Roscoe Turner 3. Larry Roscoe 4. Bo Turner Roscoe 5. Timothy Roscoe 6. Charles Roscoe This line of the Roscoe family is not recognized as being related to the Other Roscoe families that live in the same areas of Marlboro and Richmond Counties but they apparently married into some of the same families and named their children simular names. The Roscoe refer to the John Roscoe line as "The Menders Bunch". I believe that John Mender, turned Roscoe was in fact an illigitimate son of an unknown Mender women and possibly a John Roscoe from whom the main Roscoe family in Marlboro and Richmond Counties descend. Looking for addition information on this family. James R. Rasco jrrasco@bellsouth.net
Associated family sur-names: Sweatt, Steen, Thompson, Grant, Knight I am looking for additional information on a John Mender born between 1855 and 1866. In the 1880 census of Marlboro County, Smithville Township, he was enumerated in the household of William K. Sweatt as a white male, age 14, farm laborer. Relationship to Sweatt recorded as "Other". In the 1900 census of Marlboro County, Brightville Township, Enumeration District 89, sheet 15, the household of John Menders is recorded. He is listed as head of household, White Male, born in March of 1868, age 40, Married, born in S.C. His wife is listed as Pinta Menders, white female, born April 1865, age 35, born in S.C. It is believed that her maiden surname was Steen. She may have also been known as Martha according to later censuses. The children listed in the household were: 1. Bettie Menders 2. Perlie Menders 3. Elisha Menders 4. Redmond Menders 5. Walter Menders. Sometimes after the 1900 census was taken, but prior to the 1910 census, this family changed their family name to "Rascoe" and later to Roscoe. The 1910 census of Marlboro County, Smithville Township, E.D.#89, sheet 4, shows the family as follows: John Roscoe, head, male, white, age 50, married onced for 24 years. Martha Roscoe, wife, female, white, age 48, Md. onced. 10 ch./8 liv. Bettie Roscoe, Dau., female, white, age 23, widowed, 1 child/ 1 living. Perley Roscoe, son, male, white, age 22, single. Redmond Roscoe, son, male, white, age 17, single. Walter Roscoe, son, male, white, age 13, single. Hellie Roscoe, dau., female, white, age 7, single. Lula May Roscoe, G.D., female, white, age 2, single. By the 1920 census two additional children (twins) were added to the family. They were Johnnie Roscoe and Willie Roscoe. It is believe that Lula May Roscoe was an illigitimate child of Bettie (Elizabeth) Roscoe and an unknown father. Bettie was born 21 August 1886 and died 24 Sept 1916. She married William A. Grant in Scotland County N.C. 19 Sept, 1913. Pearlie Roscoe was born 9 July 1888 and died 29 June 1968. His wife was Eula or Ella E. Unk. She was born 13 Dec. 1887 and died 18 Oct. 1930. Elisha Roscoe was born about 1892. Not sure when or where he died. He married Mamie Knight 8 August 1915 in Richmond County N.C. Walter T. Roscoe was born 22 Aug. 1897 and died 16 Oct. 1941. He married Nora Catherine Thompson. Many of the descendants of this family still live in Marlboro County as well as in the Hamlet Area of Richmond County N.C. I am interested in determining who the biological parents of John Mender or John Roscoe were. Any help would be appreciated. James R. Rasco jrrasco@bellsouth.net
Hi y'all, I've added 7 deeds to the Marlboro County web site, and a few articles from the Pee Dee Advocate (1920) on the air shows in Bennettsville. The aviation field was apparently at Mr. W.J. Covington's, and some folks were not too happy to have these new-fangled machines flying around on Sundays. Mr. Roscoe Turner, Aviator, defended the practice and in doing so provided us with some interesting bits of Marlboro history. The deeds will be found under...well...deeds, and the Aviation articles will be found under History->Bennettsville (in case the URL is too long): http://www.rootsweb.com/~scmarlbo/history/aviation.html Cheers, Victoria Marlboro County SCGenWeb: http://www.rootsweb.com/~scmarlbo/
Joane, Thank you so much. That is exactly what I wanted to know. My g grandfather was a doctor in Marlboro Co and I can't wait to see what it says about him. I'm going to order that book today. "Medicine in Marlboro Co.", by Suzanne C. Linder is a great book. Well worth it's cost. It has a lot of early history of why some of our ancestors met an early death (illnesses for which there was no cure, etc.). It gives a brief biography of each doctor that has ever served in the county, including their wives, and children, etc. There is also a good bit in the book about some of the Bennettsville men as they served in the Civil war and how the town and it's residents were treated during the Union occupation. It mentions several families thoughout the book. Dr. Linder has another great book out for those who might be researching not only "Old St. David's Parish" , but other parts of South Carolina as well. I love her "Anglican Churches in Colonial South Carolina." I have bought several of my books that have helped me at the Shiness Gift Shop, P.O. Box 656, Bennettsville, SC 29512. Hi y'all, Has anyone else seen Mr. Kendall's new book, "Bennettsville and Marlboro County in Vintage Postcards"? I just received a copy and I am agog: it is beautifully, BEAUTIFULLY done and fascinating reading to boot! There are, I'd guess, over 200 postcards of Marlboro county places, people, and things, dating from roughly 1900 to 1960, and each has textual history presented with it, providing a truly rich journey through time. What a lovely, lovely book!
