Hi John, The next time I am in the Marlboro Library I will check for your family in the Beauty Spot book. Bonnie C. Freeman Bennettsville
My ancestor, Aaron Dunn, was listed in the 1880 census (p. 429, HH 217/221) as follows: Aaron Dunn, 53, married, works on farm, b. SC Cynetey (elsewhere spelled Sena, or Cynthia?), 40, wife, b. SC James Beasley, 21, stepson, single, b. SC Nancy Perrot, 10, niece, b. SC Can anyone shed any light on these relationships. Cynetey (maiden name unknown) was a second wife of Aaron. Nancy could have been a daughter of Aaron's sister (name unknown), or a daughter of Cynetey's brother or sister. James was probably a son of Cynetey by a first husband, too young to have been a son of Aaron's first wife, since Aaron's children by his first wife were older than James. Ed
The Minutes of the Marlboro Co. Court of Ordinary for 19 June 1821 contain the following: Burwell Quick returned a citation for admn. on the estate of Dorcas Quick; entered into bond with Elizabeth Quick and John Dunn for $200. John Dunn was my direct ancestor and this is the earliest known record of his presence in Marlboro Co. Can anyone tell me more about the Quick individuals mentioned in the above court record?
For anyone researching the Quicks in Marlboro Co. in the mid-19th century, don't overlook the records after the Civil War of the Southern Claims Commission in the National Archives. The following individuals, all of Marlboro Co., made claims for losses (claim nos. in parentheses): Abel Quick (4137), Allan Quick (160), Anderson Quick (1314), Elenor Quick (2795), Evander McIver Quick (2794), Gamewell Quick (1315), Harry Quick (4138), Lewis Quick (3660), Malachi Quick (890), Martin Quick (1316), Moses Quick (1285), Murdoc Quick (1317), Sarah Quick (2622).
John, Do you have any information on the Children of Jennie "jane"Odom and Barnabus Wallace??? They are my 5th G Grandparents. I have been looking for info on them for quite some time. Their daughter Elizabeth A. Wallace married Peter Boyer(Bowyer) Their Daughter Emily Boyer married Charles N. Edens and had my GGrandmother Della Edens. I would appreciate any info you can give me on them Sincerely, Brenda Wagner
My main connection is Nancy E. Quick married one of my ancestors, James J. Newton in Fayette County, GA. I have a copy of Nancy Quick's death certificate that lists her father as Eli Quick of SC and her mother as S. Turner of SC although I have her in my database as Drucilla Turner. One of Eli Quick's grand-daughters was named Drucilla. Nancy lived to be 85 years old. I have the death certificate of James J. and Nancy's son J.W. Newton and it lists his mother as Nancy Quick and father as Jim J. Newton. The Newtons at that time were from Marlboro County, SC since 1785. I haven't been able to pin down where the Quick's were although it was probably Marlboro. Write when you can. I'll post this on the Marlboro mail list. Maybe someone else can use it. Dear John, I wish I could be helpful. Actually I don't have a copy of the book. I just have notes and copies of one or two pages. The only place I have ever seen the book is in the library in Bennettsville. If I had a copy I certainly would be glad to check. My gggrandfather was Meekin Spears married in 1843 to Mary B. Singleton. I know that Nathaniel Spears was born in 1730 and came to Virginia around 1750-53 married Lydia Wise and settled in Marlboro Co., SC. James Spears married Lydia Meekin and Meekin Townsend was one of their children. I am not certain but I think another Nathaniel Spears went west and some how a descendant of his became my Meekin Spears gggrandfather. I haven't sorted it all out yet but I know there's a connection between all these families. Linda Spears Bussler Cave Spring, Georgia
Greetings to all from Gettysburg. I'm looking for SION ODOM who married ANN NEWTON born ca 1816, daughter of Younger Newton Jr. I've been trying to find this family for quite some time. There is rather a rich history between the Newtons and the Odoms. William S. Newton married Margaret Odom, Anderson Newton married Mary Margaret Odom, Cornelius Dendy Newton married Martha Wallace (daughter of Jennie Odom and Barnabus Wallace) for example. There is also connections between the Newtons and other families that are connected to the Odoms. Some of them are Stubbs, Barentine, Snead, Turner, Quick, and Parrott for example. If we had all the lines, I'm sure there would be more. Quite a few of the members of these families migrated to Fayette County, GA, from which I sprang. Any help or discussion would be much appreciated. Jim Newton
Larry, Your mention of the book on Beauty Spot by Hamer caught my attention. Although none of my family were listed as tenters, I do know that they attended the Beauty Spot Baptist Church. I understand that you have a copy of the book? If there is an index, would you please check for Edmund or Nancy Brown. I would be interested in any Browns who attended Beauty Spot Church before 1830. Hi, I was told thirty years ago by a family informant that some of my Dunn ancestors were buried at the Beauty Spot Church in Marlboro Co. In a 1978 letter from Elizabeth C. Drake, who published so many of the Marlboro Co. cemetery records, she stated: "Beauty Spot was so named by settlers from Md., who thought it such a lovely place, they gave it the name. It is ... located between Bennettsville & McColl, and off to the left. There was an old cemetery in the area, with only a few graves visible now. On [the] road to McColl, and before Tatum, is another cemetery called Beauty Spot. It is well kept and several people [are] buried there." Can you tell me anything more about the book on Beauty Spot, when written? To which one of the above locations does it refer? Can anyone better identify the location of these two sites? Was there a church; what denomination; does it still exist? Does anyone have any information on any cemetery markers at either site? Any additional information on Beauty Spot appreciated. Ed Dunn
Just for the sake of sharing information.... My gg grandfather, John Jones, was a farmer and a Methodist minister. I ran across a reference to him (and his father James) as tenters when there was the Beauty Spot encampment, and I was so intrigued by this idea of people actually having tents and camping at camp meeting time that I thought I would send along the following quotation regarding who was there. This list is from a book by Hamer on Beauty Spot. Hamer also makes reference to a plat of the grounds, made by Capt. P. L. Breeden, on November 14, 1853. I would also love to see this if anyone ever runs into it. "The following were some of the tenters on the eastern line: Wesley Parham, Thomas S. Covington, Eli Thomas, Robert D. Thomas, Rev. Charles Manship, Rev. Allen Edens, Isaac Pipkin, Lindsey Breeden, Thomas Lester, Joel Easterling, and others. On the northern line were the tents of William Bundy, William Seals, James Jones, Rev. John Jones, Philip Barrentine, Meekin J. Townsend, Joshua Fletcher, Lewis Thomas, Daniel Hamer, John H. Hamer, Alfred Hamer, William Dudley and Francis Harrison. On the western side were tents of John Crosland, Robert Bolton, George McDaniel, Shadrack Fuller, John Webster, Col. William J. Cook, Rev. Thomas Cook, Philip S. Thomas, Daniel Parham and Col. John Covington. On the southern side were those of Hugh McDonald, Aaron Breeden, Samuel Edwards, James C. Thomas, John McCollum, Rev. Henry Williams, Mrs. Pegues, Daniel Caulk and others." If you are a descendant of any of these folks and are on this system, please drop me a line. I would just love to know you are there. Larry Jones
