    3. On the birth/death dates of Capt. J. R. Parker, the following information supplied by Tom Edwards at: [email protected] ------------------- "A History of Marlboro County" by Rev. J.A.W. THOMAS was printed posthumously (he died 1 Aug 1896) in 1897 by the author's family with added info. from a son, William E. THOMAS. The original draft of the book was given to the Marlborough County Historical Society recently by a descendant. It contains passages not published. If I remember correctly the gift also included a lot of Capt. PARKER's, who was a surveyor, log books and notes. ------------------ With this information the map can probably safely be dated ca 1885-1895. Thanks to all for the information. Jim Newton

(This area is now Marietta, Robeson Co., NC). One of his land deeds was witnessed by Thomas Brown in Bladen County. This is one of the few links to other Brown families that I have found. Could Edmund and Thomas Brown be related? Edmund moved to Marlboro Co., SC about 1775. His land was situated on the SC/NC state line and he owned property in Richmond Co., NC as well as Marlboro Co. He married Nancy ANDERSON, date unknown. Children: 1. Jesse Anderson BROWN, b. 8 Aug 1769 d. 3 May 1833 Bibb Co., AL m. Obedience LEGGETT, dau. of William LEGGETT 2. Bef 1790 Marlboro Co., SC d. 1821-1824 Tennessee? 8. James BROWN, b. Bef 1790 Marlboro Co., SC d. 1821-1824 Tennessee? Most of the children moved to Humphreys and Stewart counties in Tennessee in early 1800s. Then then moved to Bibb county, AL by 1830. Need parents of Edmund and Nancy Brown. Also, any information on their children. Thanks, John ----------- John K. Brown, Jr. [email protected] Researching: Burt, Brown, Abney, Watts

Hi, Folks, My copy of "Away Down Home, A History of Robeson Co., NC," by Maud Thomas (1982) states that "The Scots set up Floral College early in the county's educational history." A new school, the Red Springs Seminary, was opened in 1896, its name changed to Southern Presbyterian College and Conservatory of Music in 1903, and then to Flora McDonald in 1915. "A spiritual successor to Floral College, Flora McDonald scheduled a homecoming day celebration in 1940 honoring the hundredth anniversary of Floral College." If you will check out the 1884 map of Robeson Co. newly posted on the Robeson Co. GenWeb site (http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/1786/robeson.html), you will see that Floral College was located at Maxton. That's close to Laurinburg and not far from Marlboro Co. 3. Larry, The History of Marlboro lists Jonathan Adams, who came from Ireland prior to the Revolutionary War and was of Scotch-Irish descent. He married a Miss Mary............and lived not far from the "burnt factory" a few miles above Bennettsville. He fought the Revol. War as a Wig and after the struggle ended and when within two days march of home, sickened and died. He left three sons, William, Shockley and John and one daughter, Divinity. It goes on to mention the families of the sons but nothing further on the daughter. (pages 271-172) The Cemetery Records reflect: Adams-Moore Cemetery Shcokley Adams, who departed this life on Oct 3, 1824; age 43 m. Mrs. Isabella Admas, died Mar 1, 1872, age 91 years son: Col. William L. Adams, died Apr 1864; age 64 years John Adams, died May 3, 1840; age 63 years w. Celia Adams, died Feb 2, 1853 Jonathon Adams, 1740; 1783, Patriot and gallant solider in the Revolution; married Mary Robeson, born 1740; 1763 Children of htis union: Sons: William 1764-1855 John 1777-1840 Shockley 1781-1824 Daughter: Divinity Adams William S. Adams, s. Jonathan and Mary, 1764; 1855, was a Revolutionary Hero at the age of 10, when he refused to give information of hidden treasure to the Tories... There is not actual gravesite of Divinity the this cemetery and I beleive the dates for Mary Robeson are incorrect in that it shows her dying before any of their children are borne - this is probably to typo error in the book. There's another Adams cemetery near the above one across the road from Frank Adams Home place and all of the markers there are for either Adams or McGregor. The first cemetery lists Tatum, Bethea, Moore and Davis. Barb ---------- > From: Larry H. 1. [SCMARLBO-L] Beauty Spot again

    3. Earlier I sent a message quoting Hamer re. tenters at the Beauty Spot Methodist camp meeting. I had inferred from his mention of one 1853 plat that his list of individuals reflected a meeting of this time. Since then, I have learned that several of the named tenters died before then--e.g, John H. Hamer in 1842, Daniel Caulk in 1844, Daniel Hamer in 1845, and Meekin Townsend in 1852. Last night I found that Thomas in his History of Marlboro County actually states in referring to Beauty Spot (Methodist) that the first camp meeting was in 1810 and the last in 1842. Given birth years for some of the individuals named by Hamer, I think his list probably corresponds to one or more later years within that range. Thanks to all who responded with messages about those listed. Larry Jones
