Sophia Augustus Wells Barnes, age 80, of Savannah, passed away at her residence on March 15, 2009. Sophia was born in Mullins Hospital in Marion County, SC, to the late William Richard Jr. and Jessie Elizabeth Copes Wells. She later moved to Sumter, SC, until she became a resident to Savannah in 1950. She was married to her beloved late husband Leonard Morgan Bob Barnes in 1950. She was a charter member of Isle of Hope Baptist Church where she also served in the choir, leader in training union, Sunday school teacher, and song leader and pianist for Marshview Inn Bible Study. Sophia was a graduate of Edmonds High School in Sumter, SC, and a graduate of Roper Hospital,. She also graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1949 and The University of South Carolina in 1950 with a Bachelor of Nursing Degree. She began working at Georgia Regional Hospital of Savannah when it opened on November 2, 1970 and worked a year in nursing after which she served in the training department as an instructor and as Hospital Librarian until her retirement on December 31, 1990. Sophia was a member of numerous genealogical societies including The Sulzbergers and The First Families of South Carolina 1670-1700. Sophia is survived by daughters Rebecca Barnes Carriere (Joe) of Montezuma, NC, Florence Barnes Shepley (Raymond JR.) of Tucker, GA, and Rivanna Barnes Dudley (John C.) of Gilbert, AZ; sons Rev. William Leonard Barnes (Puttie P.) of Savannah, Mark Albert Barnes (Deborah J.) of Florence, SC, and Major Morgan Franklin Barnes (Major Lauralee W.) of Birmingham, AL; sister Betty Harrell of Florence, SC; grandchildren Jonathan Barnes (Michelle), Bethany B. Manning (Matthew), James Barnes (Stephanie), Blake Barnes, Keith Barnes, Crystal Dudley (Jamie), Philip Hongkham (Jamie), and Marsha Hongkham; 4 step grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, 11 great grandsons, and 3 step great grandsons. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7pm on Thursday, March 19 at Isle of Hope Baptist Church. Memorial Service will be held at 11am on Friday at Isle of Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. John Finley, Rev. Dusty Reynolds, and Rev. Myron Fields officiating. Interment will be private.
