    3. Nov 16, 2001 The Rev. Dr. C. LeGrande Moody Jr. FLORENCE -- The Rev. Dr. C. LeGrande Moody Jr., 87, died Friday Nov. 16, 2001 in a local medical facility after an illness. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19 in Central United Methodist Church, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Dillon. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18 at the funeral home. He was born in Dillon County, a son of the late C. LeGrande Moody Sr. and Hannah Gibson Moody. He attended Furman University and received his B.A. degree from Elon College, his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Yale University Divinity School, and his Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Wofford College. He served as chaplain in the United States Navy during the Normandy Invasion and was awarded the National Order of Merit from the French Government. He began his ministry in 1937 in North Carolina at Hines Chapel and Apples Chapel Christian Churches. While a student at Yale Divinity School, he served as pastor of at Woodmont (Conn.) Union Chapel. His pastorates include Whitmire Methodist Church, Epworth Children's Home, Ware Shoals-Hodges Charge, Woodland Methodist Church, Central Methodist Church (Spartanburg), Grace Methodist Church, Washington Street Methodist Church, and Central United Methodist Church in Florence, from which he retired in 1979. He also served as United Methodist Church District Superintendent, Greenwood District. After his retirement, he served as interim pastor on a number of occasions. Dr. Moody also served in many capacities. He was former chairman of the Boards of Trustees for the Epworth Children's Home and the South Carolina Methodist Advocate. He was a member of the Merger Committee which helped develop the "Plan of Merger" for uniting the two Methodist Conferences in South Carolina. He also was a delegate to various conferences in the United Methodist Church. He was first married to the late Elizabeth Ann Ballentine, and from this union was born two daughters who survive him, Frances M. Brown and her husband, H.W., of North Myrtle Beach and Elizabeth M. Fiveash and her husband, Randy, of Branson, Mo. He also is survived by his wife, Mary Virginia T. Cannon Moody of the home; two stepsons, Fred R. Cannon and his wife, Linda, of Florence and Rev. Robert Cannon and his wife, Carol, of Rock Hill; two stepdaughters, Linda Nale and her husband, Rick, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Nancy Schlachte and her husband, Carl, of Pleasanton, Calif.; two sisters, Elizabeth M. Meeks of Juno Beach, Fla., and Hannah Jane Nelson and her husband, Nick, of Little River; 16 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
